  • Multimedia broadcast multicast services (MBMS) have evolved to accommodate broadcasting services in 3GPP standards. One long-standing approach is to comprise the multimedia broadcast multicast service single-frequency network based on the cellular networks of mobile operators, and another approach adds a broadcasting network to 3GPP standards. In this paper, we overview the MBMS architecture and key entities in MBMS services. In addition, the trends of MBMS are discussed in terms of technology and 3GPP standards, where MBMS functionality is described according to 3GPP releases. Finally, we discuss its capability through a comparison with ATSC 3.0, which is the latest terrestrial broadcasting standard, and then we present the current status and future perspectives of MBMS in 3GPP.

  • With the rising popularity of smart-phones, the supply of Internet protocol television is largely increased and it causes the wireless communication network load to be increased. To overcome such an overloading problem, 3GPP is now working on the standardization of MBMS since LTE Release 6 specification. MBMS has good performance in bandwidth efficiency by sharing the same bandwidth with the mulitple MBMS users having the same content. According to the proposed algorithm, in heterogeneous networks having a dispersed Single-cell MBMS where 3GPP network and Wi-Fi network are mixed, if the number of MBMS users, who are belonging to cells supporting a dispersed Single-cell MBMS, is more than a specified threshold, the MBMS priority policy is operated. Otherwise, the Wi-Fi priority policy is executed. As the simulation results show both the increase of total available bandwidth ratio and the decrease of network usage cost, it is confirmed that the proposed scheme allows the network efficiency to be maximized.

본 논문에서는 LTE (long term evolution) 기반 5G MBMS (fifth generation multimedia broadcast & multicast services)와 5G NR (fifth generation new radio)의 PBCH (physical broadcast channel) 에 대한 송수신기 구조를 설명하고, 성능을 평가한다. 본 논문에서는 가산 백색 가우시안 잡음(additive white Gaussian noise: AWGN) 및 고정 환경 하에서 LTE 기반 5G MBMS 와 5G NR 에 대한 PBCH 의 성능을 비교한다.

  • Recently, multimedia broadcasting traffic is explosively increasing since the performance of smartphones is significantly enhanced and capacity of mobile access network such as LTE is steeply increasing. We can accommodate the multimedia broadcasting traffic via general unicast scheme or eMBMS which is a broadcast-specific scheme. First, the unicast scheme provides higher spectral efficiency compared to the eMBMS. However, unfortunately, the efficiency of the unicast scheme dramatically decreases as the number of users increases. On the other hand, although the spectral efficiency of the eMBMS is lower than that of the unicast, it can serve many users with a channel. Thus, this paper defines and investigates the capacity efficiencies of the both schemes for multimedia broadcasting traffic. In addition, we derive the optimal number of users where the eMBMS can provide the higher capacity efficiency than that of the unicast scheme.

  • This paper presents our performance evaluation after the way of minimizing waiting times between channel switching for eMBMS(evolved Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Services) technique in LTE-Advanced systems. Existing composition of MBMS using IGMP(Internet Group Management Protocol) transfers the data with Multicast from BM-SC(Broadcast Multicast Service Center) to eNB(evolevd Node B) and with Broadcast from eNB to UE(User Equipment). Therefore, in case of channel switching, IGMP Join report should be transferred to BM-SC and then wait user's contents to be retransferred from eNB. To achieve this, Subscriber Channel technique of priorities is used for minimizing waiting times between channel switching as UE broadcasts favorite channels in advance.

  • With the arrival of 3rd generation cellular networks it is expected that a lot of new cellular services will be available to the mobile users like video calling, location based services etc. Similarly MBMS is one such service which is targeted for 3G mobile users for viewing talk shows, live sport events etc. One shall view this service like a small portable T.V being carried by the mobile user. The user watches the programs of his liking by joining if he wishes. In this paper we focus on the possible UTRAN architectures to provide MBMS service within UMIS networks. The paper primarily focuses on the requirement aspect, notification aspect and the mobility aspect. The paper lists many options for notifications and elaborates on them in terms of pros and cons. In the end the paper conclude with an UTRAN architecture for MBMS service which meets the requirements of this service as well as makes minimum changes to the existing UTRAN architecture while attempting to save terminal power for this service.

  • In December 2017, the world's first LTE-R for 250km/h high-speed railway was commercialized with the opening of Wonju-Gangneung high-speed railway. LTE-R has many advantages such as voice and video call, high-speed data transmission, coverage redundancy and DU redundancy. But it requires efficient use of radio resources because of a limited bandwidth of 10MHz for UL and DL, respectively. The existing unicast scheme has limited high frequency efficiency so when the number of users increases, service is limited due to the network load, which could be a problem for LTE-R in terms of stability and reliability. On the other hand, the multicast scheme via eMBMS can provide stable service even if the number of video users is high. This paper derives the number of unicast scheme users considering the LTE-R network with LAB test and calculation result, and proposes implementation plans and considerations for eMBMS commercialization on LTE-R.
