This paper focuses on the modeling and intelligent control of the new Eight-Rotor MAV, which is used to solve the problem of the low coefficient proportion between lift and gravity for the Quadrotor MAV. The Eight-Rotor MAV is a nonlinear plant, so that it is difficult to obtain stable control, due to uncertainties. The purpose of this paper is to propose a robust, stable attitude control strategy for the Eight-Rotor MAV, to accommodate system uncertainties, variations, and external disturbances. First, an interval type-II fuzzy neural network is employed to approximate the nonlinearity function and uncertainty functions in the dynamic model of the Eight-Rotor MAV. Then, the parameters of the interval type-II fuzzy neural network and gain of sliding mode control can be tuned on-line by adaptive laws based on the Lyapunov synthesis approach, and the Lyapunov stability theorem has been used to testify the asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system. The validity of the proposed control method has been verified in the Eight-Rotor MAV through real-time experiments. The experimental results show that the performance of the interval type-II fuzzy neural network based adaptive sliding mode controller could guarantee the Eight-Rotor MAV control system good performances under uncertainties, variations, and external disturbances. This controller is significantly improved, compared with the conventional adaptive sliding mode controller, and the type-I fuzzy neural network based sliding mode controller.
This purpose of this paper was to review the development trend of the VTOL MAVs with a ducted propellant that can fly like the VTOL at intermediate and high speeds, hovering, landing, and lifting off vertically over urban areas, warships, bridges, and mountainous terrains. The MAV differs in flight characteristics from helicopters and fixed wings in many respects. In addition to enhancing thrust, the duct protects personnel from accidental contact with the spinning rotor. The purpose of the U.S. Army FCS and DARPA's OAV program is spurring development of a the VTOL ducted MAV. Today's MAVs are equipped with video/infrared cameras to hover-and-stare at enemies hidden behind forests and hills for approximately one hour surveillance and reconnaissance. Class-I is a VTOL ducted MAV developed in size and weight that individual soldiers can store in their backpacks. Class-II is the development of an organic VTOL ducted fan MAV with twice the operating time and a wider range of flight than Class-I. MAVs will need to develop to perch-and-stare technology for lengthy operation on the current hover-and-stare. The near future OAV's concept is to expand its mission capability and efficiency with a joint operation that automatically lifts-off, lands, refuels, and recharges on the vehicle's landing pad while the manned-unmanned ground vehicle is in operation. A ducted MAV needs the development of highly accurate relative position technology using low cost and small GPS for automatic lift-off and landing on the landing pad. There is also a need to develop a common command and control architecture that enables the cooperative operation of organisms between a VTOL ducted MAV and a manned-unmanned ground vehicle.

Existing flapping MAV which is driven by motors or the other materials, has various defects. For the settlement of the issue, flapping MAV wing actuator is developed by using ADE(Acrylic Dielectric Elastomer). In comparison with existing materials which drive flapping wing, ADE has advantages of light weight as well as sufficient force. In order that correct lift farce occurs at this actuator, it must require to control to approach given reference. So it is controlled to approach given displacement by using fuzzy algorithm and is verified through simulation.

The objective of this research was to develop a coaxial rotor MAV which is suitable for a indoor reconnaissance mission. Preliminary design parameters were determined, based on the dimensions of other reference MAVs. The designed rotor performance was estimated by Blade Element Momentum Theory, and the analyses were compared against the measurements. Stability and vibration issues of the prototype were circumvented by making parts of vehicle with NC machine, as well as equipped with teetering rotor and stabilizer. The designed coaxial rotor MAV showed successfully flight equipped with video camera. However, it was founded that further research activities should be focused on efficient rotor design to obtain better performance.

Wireless energy supply for an MAV propulsion system using microwave was developed. This system consists of three sub system; the transmitter system, the rectenna system, and the tracking system. In the transmitter system five horn antennas were used as the antenna elements for the phased array system and both the beam divergence and steering angle was about 9deg. Eight rectennas were arrayed in parallel to obtain enough power to drive the electric motor on the MAV(the voltage was 250mV and the current was 6.8mA) in rectenna system. In tracking system two units of antenna system with leaf pattern which received the linearly-polarized wave despite the MAV yaw angle were set in each axis(x, y) for tracking an MAV in a 2-Dimentional space. And three output voltages $V_{com},\;V_1$ and $V_2$ were loaded in the PC to detect if the distance between transmitter and receiver was not constant. Finally when the microwave beam was steered by the phased array system the output voltage from rectenna was measured at 62cm while the MAV circled around above the transmitter system.

In this paper, we propose the gaussian mixture model based pattern classification algorithm of forearm electromyogram. We define the motion of 1-degree of freedom as holding and unfolding hand considering a daily life for patient with prosthetic hand. For the extraction of precise features from the EMG signals, we use the difference absolute mean value(DAMV) and the mean absolute value(MAV) to consider amplitude characteristic of EMG signals. We also propose the D_DAMV and D_MAV in order to classify the amplitude characteristic of EMG signals more precisely. In this paper, we implemented a test targeting four adult male and identified the accuracy of EMG pattern classification of two motions which are holding and unfolding hand.

In search and rescue mission, micro aerial vehicles (MAVs) are typically used to capture image and video from an aerial perspective and transfer the data to the ground station. Because of the power limitation, a cluster of MAVs are required for a large search area, hence an ad-hoc wireless network must be maintained to transfer data more conveniently and fast. However, the unstable link and the intermittent connectivity between the MAVs caused by MAVs' movement may challenge the packet forwarding. This paper proposes a delay tolerant packet forwarding algorithm based on location estimation for MAV networks, called DTNest algorithm. In the algorithm, ferrying MAVs are used to transmit data between MAVs and the ground station, and the locations of both searching MAVs and ferrying MAVs are estimated to compute the distances between the MAVs and destination. The MAV that is closest to the destination is selected greedy to forward packet. If a MAV cannot find the next hop MAV using the greedy strategy, the packets will be stored and re-forwarded once again in the next time slot. The experiment results show that the proposed DTNest algorithm outperforms the typical DTNgeo algorithm in terms of packet delivery ratio and average routing hops.

A design methodology is presented to develop the hingeless control surfaces for MAV using adhesively bonded Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) actuators. These actuators have got the capability to deflect the trailing edge surfaces of the wing to attain the required maneuverability, besides achieving the set aerodynamic trim condition. A scheme involving design, analysis, fabrication and testing procedure has been adopted to realize the trailing edge morphing mechanism. The stiffness distribution of the composite MAV wing is tailored such that the induced deflection by piezoelectric actuation is approximately optimized. Through ground testing, the proposed concept has been demonstrated on a typical MAV structure. Electromechanical analysis is performed to evaluate the actuator performance and subsequently aeroelastic and 2D CFD analyses are carried out to see the functional requirements of wing trailing edge surfaces to behave as elevons. Efforts have been made to obtain the performance comparison of conventional control surfaces (elevons) with morphing wing trailing edge surfaces. A significant improvement in lift to drag ratio is noticed with morphed wing configuration in comparison to conventional wing. Further, it has been shown that the morphed wing trailing edge surfaces can be deployed as elevons for aerodynamic trim applications.
