  • TCP is the most widely used transport protocol in Internet applications that guarantees a reliable data transfer. But, in the wireless multi-hop networks, TCP performance is degraded because it is designed for wired networks. The main reasons of TCP performance degradation are contention for wireless medium at the MAC layer, hidden terminal problem, exposed terminal problem, packet losses in the link layer, unfairness problem, reordering problem caused by path disconnection, bandwidth waste caused by exponential backoff of retransmission timer due to node's mobility and so on. Specially, in the mobile ad-hoc networks, discrepancy between a station's transmission range and interference range produces hidden terminal problem that decreases TCP performance greatly by limiting simultaneous transmission at a time. In this paper, we propose a new MAC algorithm for mobile ad-hoc networks to solve the problem that a node can not transmit and just increase CW by hidden terminal. In the IEEE 802.11 MAC DCF, a node increases CW exponentially when it fails to transmit, but the proposed algorithm, changes CW adaptively according to the reason of failure so we get a TCP performance enhancement. We show by ns-2 simulation that the proposed algorithm enhances the TCP performance by fairly distributing the transmission opportunity to the failed nodes by hidden terminal problems.

  • In this paper, an efficient technique for enhancing the QoS of multimedia service for an WiMedia network applying distributed cooperative medium access (D-MAC) protocol is proposed. D-MAC protocol has been proposed to support high-rate Wireless Personal Area Networks (HR-WPANs) by the WiMedia Alliance. Unlike the centralized IEEE 802.15.3 MAC, the D-MAC UWB specified by WiMedia supports all devices to be self-organized and removes the SOP (Simultaneous Operating Piconet) problem, i.e., packet collisions between overlapped piconets in the centralized IEEE 802.15.3 MAC. However the WiMedia D-MAC can't prevent reduce the throughput degradation occurred by mobile nodes with low data rate. Therefore, a distributed cooperative MAC protocol for multi-hop UWB network is proposed in this paper. The proposed technique can intelligently select the transmission path with higher data rate to provide real-time multimedia services with minimum delay, thus enhances QoS of multimedia service.

  • The Home Phoneline Networking Alliance(HomePNA) 2.0 technology can establish a home network using existing in-home phone lines, which provides a channel rate of 4-32 Mbps. HomePNA 2.0 Medium Access Control(MAC) protocol adopts an IEEE 802.3 Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection(CSMA/CD) access method, Quality of Service(QoS) algorithm, and Distributed Fair Priority Queuing(DFPQ) collision resolution algorithm. In this paper, we describe some performance analysis results of HomePNA 2.0 MAC protocol and the requirements of HomePNA 2.0 MAC controller. Then, we propose the architecture of HomePNA 2.0 MAC controller circuit, show the simulation result of each block included in HomePNA 2.0 MAC controller, and present the HomePNA 2.0 transceiver chip that we have implemented.

  • In this paper, we investigate the parameters of the IEEE 802.11e MAC protocol, CWmin and AIFS, in terms of their capability of QoS control. The delay and the bandwidth performances are selected as the QoS medics to examine the characteristics of those parameters. A policy on MAC parameters usage, thereby, is proposed. We regard the MAC-level traffic classification as the differentiation in the channel accessibility, and thus the delay differentiation is referred to a main issue of the class-level QoS control. Realizing the tight relationship between the delay performance and the parameter AIFS, we derive an analytical expression of their relationship through an analysis of the MAC mechanism. Various simulations are examined which show the validity of our assertions, and a policy on the parameters usage is proposed based on those observations.

  • In this paper, we propose a multi-channel MAC protocol to improve the channel efficiency and network performance in wireless ad hoc networks. There are two main problems encountered in designing multi-channel MAC protocols. The first problem is the rendezvous problem and the second is multi-channel hidden node problem. In order to solve these problems, most of previous researches that have considered multi-channel MAC protocols use a common control channel to exchange control packets. However, they have a bottleneck problem at common control channel as increasing the number of data channels. The proposed MAC protocol solves the multi-channel hidden node problem using a TDMA scheme and increases the network throughput because transmitting and receiving data at the same time is possible. Also, since there is no common control channel, the network does not suffer from the common control channel saturation problem. Moreover, it achieves energy savings by allowing nodes that are not involved in communication to go into sleep mode. Simulation results show that the proposed MAC protocol improves the network throughput and channel efficiency and provides energy savings.

  • On the wireless sensor network MAC protocols, one of main issues is energy enciency. Since several asynchronous wireless sensor network MAC protocols with short preamble sampling scheme can be operated without setting the timing synchronization among neighbor nodes, it consumes a little energy for maintaining protocols. However, each node encounters either preamble or data overhearing problem, because each node wakes up in a different time and must check whether the frame is being sent to itself or not. To solve this overhearing problem, we newly propose B-MAC++ that can reduce the overhearing energy consumption by using short preambles with destination address and payload length. from simulation results, we show that the proposed B-MAC++ has advantageous in terms of power consumption efficiency over other asynchronous wireless sensor network MAC protocols.

  • Until now, much research on cooperative communications to increase system throughput at Ad Hoc networks has been provided. In this paper, in order to enhance system throughput much more at Ad Hoc networks, a network coding-enabled new MAC protocol, called NC-MAC protocol, is proposed and its performance is evaluated with a mathematical approach. Numerical results show that this scheme provides conspicuously enhanced system throughput compared to DCF scheme, and more increased system throughput by 48% than rDCF and CO-MAC schemes.

  • In this paper, we propose a QoS (Quality of Service)-aware and cooperative resource reservation scheme using cross-layer link adaptation for wireless high definition video transmission through UWB (Ultra Wide Band) network with D-MAC (Distributed Medium Access Control). A wireless high definition video transmission system usually requires stable high throughput even without line-of-sight, e.g., a destination device in another room separated by a wall. Since the WiMedia D-MAC supporting DRP (Distributed Reservation Protocol) scheme causes lots of DRP resource reservation conflicts due to failure of beacon detection in wireless channel environment, overall performances of the WiMedia D-MAC can be deteriorated. And the current WiMedia MAC standard has not considered QoS provisioning even though QoS parameters such as a range of service rates are provided to each traffic stream. Therefore, we propose Relay DRP protocol with QoS-based relay node selection criterion, which makes a relay path to avoid DRP resource reservation conflicts and guarantee QoS more stably through cross-layer link adaptation of cooperative relay transmission scheme and is compliant with the current WiMedia D-MAC protocol. Simulation results demonstrate performance improvements of the proposed method for throughput and QoS provisioning.

  • To increase the bit rate over than 1 Gb/s in LED visible light communications, we need to reduce the multipath effect of the light in indoor environment. In this paper, we propose a MAC protocol for LED visible light wireless LAN with beamforming technique. We assumed that spatial light modulator is used for beamforming function. We use polling method since detecting another uplink channel is difficult in visible light communication. We also estimated the performance of the proposed MAC protocol.

  • An Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) is an economical and efficient access network that received significant research attention in recent year. A MAC protocol of the PON, the next generation access network, is based primarily on TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access). In this paper, we addressed the problems of a dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) in Fairness and QoS Performance. We augmented the advanced bandwidth allocation algorithms to support efficient resource utilization by reducing the unused remaining bandwidth made by idle state ONUs. Our new proposed advanced bandwidth allocation algorithm can allocate effectively and fairly the bandwidths between end-users.
