Earlier efforts on optical access concentrated on the design of PONs for the collection and distribution portion of the access network. PON architecture is very simple but it requires MAC protocol for control of upstream traffic. This paper proposes a MAC protocol for a broadband access network using an ATM Passive Optical Network supporting CBR/rtVBR, nrtVBR, ABR aild UBR traffic. For the proposed MAC scheme, we present grant field format, minislot format, and bandwidth allocation algorithm.
Earlier efforts on optical access concentrated on the design of PONs for the collection and distribution portion of the access network. PON architecture is very simple but it requires MAC protocol for control of upstream traffic. This paper proposes a MAC protocol for a broadband access network using an ATM Passive Optical Network supporting CBR/rtYBR, nrtYBR, UBR and ABR traffic. For the proposed MAC scheme, we present grant field format, minislot format, and bandwidth allocation algorithm. From the simulation result, we have confirmed that our proposed scheme can reduce the average cell delay in comparison to that of conventional MAC schemes.
Wireless access network section needs strong security which supports high data rate and mobility not to invade patient's privacy by exposing patient's sensitive biometric from automatic implantable device that is adapted to u-healthcare service. This paper builds test bed and performs assessment and measurement of security ability of WiMAX network to transmit and receive mobile patient's biometric by building WiMAX network in wireless access network not to expose paitne's biometirc at wireless access network section to the third person. Specially, this paper compares and assesses data security, MAC control message security, handover conection delay, and frame loss and bandwidth of ECDH at the layer of WiMAX security compliance, WiMAX MAC IPSec, and MAC.

Nodes in WSNs must operate under limited energy resource. Controlling access to the channel in WSNs plays a key role in determining channel utilization and energy consumption. This paper introduces a priority-based time slot allocation protocol for hybrid TDMA/CSMA MAC in WSNs. This protocol combines both TDMA and CSMA techniques while introducing prioritization by (m,k)-firm constraint. The performance of this protocol is obtained through simulations for various number of nodes and show significant improvements in delay and packet delivery ratio compared to S-MAC.
Ethernet-based passive optical network(EPON) technology is being considered as a promising solution for next-generation broadband access network. It must have the property of high efficiency, low cost, and support quality of service(QoS). A major feature for this new architecture is the use of a shared transmission media between all connected optical network unit(ONU). Hence, medium access control(MAC) arbitration mechanisms are essential for the successful implementation of EPON. In this paper we propose a simple dynamic bandwidth allocation(DBA) algorithm that improves the performance of network and supports IP-based multimedia applications with the bursty data traffic. In addition, we introduce analytic models of proposed algorithms and prove the system based on our algorithm to be asymptotically stable. Simulation results show the new DBA algorithm provides high bandwidth efficiency and low queueing delay of ONU in EPON.
In this paper, we evaluate the throughput and delay performance of a wireless Local Area Network(WLAN) employing the OFDM-based IEEE 802.lla Medium Access Control(MAC) protocol by compute. simulations under wireless indoor. channel. Packet Error Rate(PER) is also investigated for the various Eb/No. It is shown that, with soft-decision Viterbi decoder, throughput and delay performance are close to those of error-free channel at Eb/No above 8dB and PER is about 2${\times}$10$\^$-5/ at Eb/No=10dB.
This paper proposes a complete solution of a contention-based medium access control in wireless local networks to provide station level quality of service guarantees in both downstream and upstream directions. The solution, based on the mature distributed coordination function protocol, includes a new fixed contention window backoff scheme, a tuning procedure to derive the optimal parameters, a super mode to mitigate the downstream bottleneck at the access point, and a simple admission control algorithm. The proposed system guarantees that the probability of the delay bound violation is below a predefined threshold. In addition, high channel utilization can be achieved at the same time. The numerical results show that the system has advantages over the traditional binary exponential backoff scheme, including efficiency and easy configuration.

Unlike a terrestrial wireless sensor network which uses radio waves, UWASN(Underwater Acoustic Sensor Network) relies on acoustic waves. There are lots of ongoing researches for long latency and limited bandwidth of underwater sensor network by using acoustic wave. Packets transferred by node often colide in underwater sensor network due to long latency. To solve this kind of problem, in general, Back-off scheme which is used in wireless network is used. However, fixed Slot-time according to node allocation generates useless time delay, and this lowers network performance. In this thesis, active setting technique of Slot-time is proposed, and applied for already studied MAC protocol. At the conclusion, it was proved that the MAC protocol using the proposed scheme has better performance than existing MAC protocol as a result comparison.

In this paper we propose the QAC-MAC that supports Quality of Service(QoS) and saves energy resources of the sensor node, and hence prolonging the lifetime of the sensor network with multiple sink nodes. Generally, the nodes nearest to the sink node often experience heavy congestion since all data is forwarded toward the sink through those nodes. So this critically effects on the delay-constraint data traffics. QAC-MAC uses a hybrid mechanism that adapts scheduled scheme for medium access and scheduling and unscheduled scheme based on TDMA for no data collision transmission. Generally speaking, characteristics of the real-time traffic with higher priority tends to be bursty and has same destination. QAC-MAC adapts cross-layer concept to rearrange the data transmission order in each sensor node's queue, saves energy consumption by allowing few nodes in data transmission, and prolongs the network lifetime.

As underwater environment monitoring system's interest has increased, the research is proceeding about underwater acoustic sensor network. Underwater sensor network can be applicable to many fields, such as underwater environment monitoring, underwater resource exploration, oceanic data collection, military purposes, etc. It is essential to define the PHY-MAC protocol for revitalization of the underwater acoustic sensor network which is available utilization in a variety of fields. However, underwater acoustic sensor network has to implement by consideration of underwater environmental characteristics, such as limited bandwidth, multi-path, fading, long propagation delay caused by low acoustic speed. In this paper, we define frequency of adjusted PHY protocol, network topology, MAC protocol, PHY-MAC interface, data frame format by consideration of underwater environmental characteristics. We also present system configuration of our implementation and evaluate performance based on our implementation with test in real underwater field.
