This paper presents analysis of the IEEE802.11 MAC protocol and implementation of the asynchronous communication portion of the IEEE802.11 MAC protocol. we have used PRISM2 chipsets from intertsil to build physical layer and PCI controller from PLX to interface LLC layer. This study is shown to be able to apply to MAC implementation in high speed LAN.
IEEE 802.15.3 is wireless Medium Access Control(MAC) and Physical Layer(PHY) specification for high rate WPAN (Wireless Personal Area Network). IEEE 802.15.3 MAC Layer provides Qos with three kinds of acknowledgements; No acknowledgement, Immediate acknowledgement, and Delayed acknowledgement. This paper presents how to improve QoS with new acknowledgement method called Delayed Negative acknowledgement. This paper describes the method of using Delayed Negative acknowledgement and presents the calculation of QoS improvement by using Delayed Negative acknowledgement.

Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANET's) are gaining popularity in research community with every passing year due to the key role they play in Intelligent Transportation System. Their primary objective is to provide safety, but their potential to offer a variety of user-oriented services makes them more attractive. The biggest challenge in providing all these services is the inherent characteristics of VANET itself such as highly dynamic topology due to which maintaining continuous communication among vehicles is extremely difficult. Here comes the importance of routing solutions which traditionally are designed using strict layered architecture but fail to address stringent QoS requirements. The paradigm of cross-layer design for routing has shown remarkable performance improvements. This paper aims to highlight routing challenges in VANET, limitations of single-layer solutions and presents a survey of cross-layer routing solutions that utilize the information from the MAC layer to improve routing performance in VANET.

This paper presents the design of a reservation-based MAC protocol to support multimedia traffic over mobile ad-hoc networks and evaluates its performance. Our MAC protocol is based on a hierarchical approach consisting of two sub-layers. The lower sub-layer of the MAC protocol with reservation provides a fundamental access method using CSMA/CA in order to support asynchronous data traffic over mobile ad-hoc networks. The upper sub-layer supports real-time periodic data by making a slot reservation before transmitting actual data. The proposed protocol has been validated through simulations using ns-2. The results show that the proposed MAC protocol can offer higher throughput and lower delay than standard implementations of the IEEE 802.11.
In recent years, the needs for WLANs(Wireless Local Area Networks) technology which can access to Internet anywhere have been dramatically increased particularly in SOHO(Small Office Home Office) and Hot Spot. However, unlike wired networks, there are some unique characteristics of wireless networks. These characteristics include the burst packet losses due to unreliable wireless channel. Note that burst packet losses, which occur when the distance between the wireless station and the AP(Access Point) increase or when obstacles move temporarily between the station and AP, are very frequent in 802.11 networks. Conversely, due to burst packet losses, the performance of 802.11 networks are not always as sufficient as the current application require, particularly when they use TCP at the transport layer. The high packet loss rate over wireless links can trigger unnecessary execution of TCP congestion control algorithm, resulting in performance degradation. In order to overcome the limitations of WLANs environment, MAC-layer LDA(Loss Differentiation Algorithm)has been proposed. MAC-layer LDA prevents TCP's timeout by increasing CRD(Consecutive Retry Duration) higher than burst packet loss duration. However, in the wireless channel with high packet loss rate, MAC-layer LDA does not work well because of two reason: (a) If the CRD is lower than burst packet loss duration due to the limited increase of retry limit, end-to-end performance is degraded. (b) energy of mobile device and bandwidth utilization in the wireless link are wasted unnecessarily by Reducing the drainage speed of the network buffer due to the increase of CRD. In this paper, we propose a new retransmission module based on Cross-layer approach, called BLD(Burst Loss Detection) module, to solve the limitation of previous link layer retransmission schemes. BLD module's algorithm is retransmission mechanism at IEEE 802.11 networks and performs retransmission based on the interaction between retransmission mechanisms of the MAC layer and TCP. From the simulation by using ns-2(Network Simulator), we could see more improved TCP throughput and energy efficiency with the proposed scheme than previous mechanisms.

In this paper, a joint PHY-MAC layer optimized resource allocation scheme for OFDMA based micro base stations is investigated. We propose cross-layer optimized two-stage resource allocation scheme including cross-layer functional description and control information flow between PHY-MAC layers. The proposed two-stage resource allocation scheme consists of a user grouping stage and a resource allocation stage. In the user grouping stage, users are divided into a macro base station user group and a micro base station user group based on the PHY-MAC layer characteristics of each user. In the resource allocation stage, a scheduling scheme and an allotment of resources are determined. In the proposed scheme, diversity and adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) schemes are exploited as schedulers. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme increases the average cell throughput about 40~80 % compared to the conventional system without micro base stations.

IEEE 802.15.4 is the one of the protocols for radio communication in a personal area network. Since it aims to provide low cost and low power communication for ubiquitous communication, it requires high level of optimization in implementation. Recently, there have been many studies on the performance evaluation of IEEE 802.15.4 MAC protocol. According to the results of the studies, it is tendency that the transceiver is implemented to SoC type. On the implementation, the specific functions of MAC like CSMA-CA and MAC frame handling is designed to hardwired functions. In this paper, we implemented the protocol with hardwired low MAC (HL-MAC) and its state machine for the optimization from the physical layer and MAC layer. it has the characteristics of the small code size and the enhanced power consumption.

In this letter, we propose a cross-layer technique jointly considering modulation coding schemes (MCSs) of medium access control (MAC) layer, source significance information (SSI) and error concealment unit of application (APP) layer, and channel quality information (CQI) of physical (PHY) layer. We demonstrate the improved video quality by the proposed technique when H.264 videos are streamed over Rayleigh fading wireless channels.

In this paper, we propose a design methodology of IEEE 802.11n MAC which aims to achieve the higher throughput of more than 100Mbps in downlink as measured at the MAC-SAP and present the implementation results of MAC using the proposed design methodology. With our proposed methodology, different from the conventional design flow which has the separate codes for the protocol validation, for the network simulation, and for the system implementation, the unified code can be used for the network simulation and the implementation of software and hardware. Our MAC architecture is partitioned into two parts, Upper-layer MAC and Lower-layer MAC, in order to achieve the high efficiency for the new features of IEEE 802.11n standard. They are implemented in software and hardware respectively. The implemented MAC is tested on ARM based FPGA board.
In this paper, high-speed Hybrid MAC (Medium Access Control layer) implementation suitable for smart grid applications is researched. MB-OFDM (Multi-Band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) is considered for high-speed communication method in smart grid application. In this paper, the MAC adopts the distributed network managing method. Also, the MB-OFDM merit of high-speed transfer rate of up to 480Mbps must be supported. Hence, this paper presents an efficient hardware-software integration (co-design) method in order to realize a high- speed transmission, and a realizing method of distribution network. Finally, MAC performance and reliability based on MB-OFDM PHY (PHYsical layer) are confirmed through simulation and emulation.
