Hydrogen Production from Photocatalytic Splitting of Methanol/water Solution over Ti Impregnated WO3 (티타늄 함유 텅스텐 산화물 광촉매를 이용한 메탄올/물 분해로부터 수소제조)

  • For effectively photochemical hydrogen production, Ti ions (0.01, 0.10, 0.50 mol%) impregnated $WO_3$ ($Ti/WO_3$) nanometer sized particles were prepared using a impregnation method as a photocatalyst. The characteristics of the synthesized $Ti/WO_3$ photocatalysts were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), photoluminescence spectra (PL), atomic force microscope (AFM), and electrostatic force microscope (EFM). The evolution of $H_2$ from methanol/water (1/1) photo-splitting over $Ti/WO_3$ photocatalysts was enhanced compared to those over pure $TiO_2$ and $WO_3$ photocatalysts; 3.02 mL of $H_2$ gas was evolved after 8 h when 0.5 g of a 0.10 mol% $Ti/WO_3$ catalyst was used.

  • An endochitosanase-producing bacterium was isolated from soil and identified as a strain of Bacillus sp. The isolate was gram positive, rod shape $(0.4-0.6{\times}1.6-2.2{\mu}m)$, endospore-forming, catalase positive, and mobility positive, and grown at pH 4.5-11.0 and upto $42^{\circ}C$ in the medium containing 2% NaCl. RAPD analysis of the DNA purified from the strain was also performed, and the chitosanase-producing strain was named as Bacillus sp. P16. The culture supernatant of the strain showed strong liquefaction activity and rapidly decreased viscosity of chitosan solution. By TLC and HPLC, chitooligosaccharides of DP 2-7 were separated and identified from the enzyme hydrolyzates of chitosan. The chitosanase from Bacillus sp. P16 was thus regarded as an endo-splitting type.

Meauring Method of Magnetic Particles' Coercivity Distribution and Its Applications (자성분말의 보자력 분포도 측정방법과 그 응용)

  • Both manufacturing parameters and particles' chemical composition controll coercivity and its distribution of magnetic particles. The coercivity and its distribution are important properties for high density magnetic recording, so these are used as tool for evaluation of reproducibility of magnetic particles. We report in this paper the applications of dM/dH versus H curve, which is derived from magnetic hysteresis loop, to the evaluation of coercivity distribution of magnetic particles and oxidation studies of recording metal particles. The coercivity distri-bution can be estimated from the full width half rnaximun (FWHM) and the peak shape of the dM/dH versus H curve. The peak shape of the curve depends upon distribution of particles' coercivity. The peak of dM/dH versus H curve becomes broad and lor is splitted into two or rmre peaks. It depends on uniformity of particles' coercivity. When the coercivity difference between Ba-Ferrite and ${\gamma}-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ is larger than 600 Oe, the peak becomes broad and is consequently splitted into two peaks. Ununiformly substituted Ba-Ferrite particles show broad peak. It is apparent that the analysis of the curve is one of sensitive measuring techniques for determination of coercivity distri-bution and studies on magnetic properties of substituted Ba-Ferrite and oxidation of magnetic recording metal particles.

Solution Processed Porous Fe2O3 Thin Films for Solar-Driven Water Splitting

  • We report facile solution processing of mesoporous hematite (${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$) thin films for high efficiency solar-driven water splitting. $Fe_2O_3$ thin films were prepared on fluorine doped tin oxide(FTO) conducting substrates by spin coating of a precursor solution followed by annealing at $550^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. in air ambient. Specifically, the precursor solution was prepared by dissolving non-toxic $FeCl_3$ as an Fe source in highly versatile dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) as a solvent. The as-deposited and annealed thin films were characterized for their morphological, structural and optical properties using field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy. The photoelectrochemical performance of the precursor (${\alpha}-FeOOH$) and annealed (${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$) films were characterized and it was found that the ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ film exhibited an increased photocurrent density of ${\sim}0.78mA/cm^2$ at 1.23 V vs. RHE, which is about 3.4 times higher than that of the ${\alpha}-FeOOH$ films ($0.23mA/cm^2$ at 1.23 V vs. RHE). The improved performance can be attributed to the improved crystallinity and porosity of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ thin films after annealing treatment at higher temperatures. Detailed electrical characterization was further carried out to elucidate the enhanced PEC performance of ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ thin films.

  • This study focused on the synthesis of $Nb_xSrTi_{1-x}O_3$ photocatalysts which partially inserted Nb ions with excellent ability of fluorescence into the perovskite structured $SrTiO_3$ frameworks and their photocatalytic hydrogen productions from methanol/water splitting corresponding to the molar ratios of Ti and Nb. The characteristics of the synthesized $SrTiO_3$ and $Nb_xSrTi_{1-x}O_3$ powders were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), and UV-Visible spectrometer. The hydrogen evolution from methanol/water photo-splitting was enhanced over $Nb_{0.05}SrTi_{0.95}O_3$ compared to those over $SrTiO_3$ and another $Nb_xSrTi_{1-x}O_3$; 4.9 mL of hydrogen gases was collected after 8 h when 0.5g of $Nb_{0.05}SrTi_{0.95}O_3$ catalyst was used in pH 10.

Relationship of Glomerular Basement Membrane Alterations to Epithelial Cell Structure and Clinical Parameters in Alport Syndrome (Alport 증후군에서 사구체 기저막의 형태학적 변화와 사구체 상피세포의 구조 및 임상지표와의 관계)

  • Purpose : This study was performed to evaluate the relationship between glomerular basement membrane (GBM) alterations to epithelial cell (EpC) structure and renal function in Alport Syndrome (AS) patients. Methods : Fifteen patients diagnosed with AS (4-26yrs) were examined. The GBM in AS was categorized as : C1) normal, C2) minor alterations (widening of lamina rara interna or externa without lamina densa change), C3) nonspecific splitting of lamina densa, C4) basket-weaving pattern of lamina densa splitting. The length of each GBM portion along the epithelial side was measured on the systematically obtained electron microscopic photographs. Furthermore to obtain an objective assessment of the degree of glomerular EpC foot process change, the number of slit pores along $10\;{\mu}m$ of peripheral GBM in each category was obtained. Results : The percentage of normal GBM portion (C1) correlated inversely with daily protein excretion (g/day/$m^2$, P<0.05) and sum of the percentage of abnormal GBM portion (C2+C3+C4) had direct correlation with daily protein excretion (g/day/$m^2$, P<0.05). There were no significant relationships between the percentages of other categories of GBM alterations and creatinine clearance or protein excretion. There were no significant relationships between of creatinine clearance in relation to normal GBM(C1) portion as well as that in relation to sum of the percentage of abnormal GBM portion (C2+C3+C4). GBM abnormality did not correlate with age at biopsy. Conclusion : The extent of GBM structural abnormality is related to proteinuria in AS but the epithelial response is uniform even though the GBM ultrastructural lesions are not.

Purification and Characterization of Mouse Liver Rhodanese

  • Rhodanese from mouse liver was purified to near homogeneity by ammonium sulfate precipitation, CM-Sephadex ion exchange, hydroxyapatite and Sephacryl S-200-HR gel filtration chromatographies with a purification of 776 folds. The molecular weight was determined by Sephadex G-150 gel filtration and found to be 34.8 KDa. SOS-PAGE showed molecular weight 34 KDa and two identical subunits splitting by aging for 3 weeks at $-70^{\circ}C$ the molecular weight of which was 17 KDa. The optimal pH of enzyme activity was 9.4 and the pI value of the enzyme was 6.6. Rhodanese showed the optimal reaction temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ and near linear increasing pattern until 10 min. incubation. $K_m$ values of rhodanese for KCN and $Na_{2}S_{2}O_{3}$ as substrates were 12.5 mM and 8.3 mM, respectively. Rhodanese activity was inhibited by more than 70% at a concentration of 100 ${\mu}M$ of $Ni^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Hg^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$. Other metal ions, such as $Mn^{2+}$, $Mg^{2-}$, $Ca^{2+}$, and $Fe^{2+}$ showed no effect on rhodanese activity.

Formula to identify the Influence of steel fibres on the mechanical properties of HPC

  • This work performed to analyses the impact of hooked end steel fibres on the mechanical properties of high performance concrete. The mechanical properties considered incorporate compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength. Taking in to thought parameters, such as, volume fraction of fibres, fibre aspect ratio and grade of concrete, a logical strategy called Taguchi technique was utilized to discover the ideal blend of factors. L9 Orthogonal Array (OA) of Taguchi network comprising of three variables and three dimensions is utilized in this work. The evaluations of concrete considered were M60, M80 and M100. M60 contained 15% of metakaolin as bond swap though for M80 it was 5% of metakaolin and for M100 it was 10% metakaolin and 10% of silica smolder. The volume portion of fiber was fluctuated by 0.5%; 1% and 1.5% and the viewpoints proportions considered were 50, 60 and 80. The test outcomes demonstrate that incorporation of steel fibres enhance significantly the the strength characteristics of concrete, predominantly the splitting tensile strength and flexural strength. In light of relapse investigation of the test information scientific models were produced for compressive strength, split tensile strength and flexural strength of the steel fibre-reinforced high performance concrete.

Photocurrent study on the splitting of the valence band and growth of MgGa2Se4 single crystal thin film by hot wall epitaxy (Hot Wall Epitaxy(HWE)법에 의한 MgGa2Se4 단결정 박막 성장과 가전자대 갈라짐에 대한 광전류 연구)

  • A stoichiometric mixture of evaporating materials for $MgGa_2Se_4$ single crystal thin films was prepared from horizontal electric furnace. To obtain the single crystal thin films, $MgGa_2Se_4$ mixed crystal was deposited on thoroughly etched semi-insulating GaAs(100) substrate by the Hot Wall Epitaxy (HWE) system. The source and substrate temperatures were $610^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. The crystalline structure of the single crystal thin films was investigated by double crystal X-ray diffraction (DCXD). The temperature dependence of the energy band gap of the $MgGa_2Se_4$ obtained from the absorption spectra was well described by the Varshni's relation, $E_g(T)=2.34 eV-(8.81{\times}10^{-4}eV/K)T^2/(T+251K)$. The crystal field and the spin-orbit splitting energies for the valence band of the $MgGa_2Se_4$ have been estimated to be 190.6 meV and 118.8 meV, respectively, by means of the photocurrent spectra and the Hopfield quasicubic model. These results indicate that the splitting of the ${\Delta}so$ definitely exists in the ${\Gamma}_5$ states of the valence band of the $MgGa_2Se_4$/GaAs epilayer. The three photocurrent peaks observed at 10 K are ascribed to the $A_{1^-}$, $B_{1^-}$exciton for n = 1 and $C_{27}-exciton$ peaks for n = 27.

Study of Mg2Ni1-xFex Alloys by Mössbauer Resonance (Mössbauer 공명에 의한 Mg2Ni1-xFex 합금의 연구)

  • After preparing $Mg_2Ni_{1-x}{^{57}}Fe_x$(x=0.015, 0.03, 0.06, 0.12 and 0.24) alloys, they were studied by $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ resonance. The $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra of x=0.015 and 0.03 alloys exhibit two doublets (doublet 1, 2). That of x=0.06 alloys shows two doublets (doublet 1,2) and one six-line, and those of x=0.12 and 0.24 alloys have only one six-line. The doublet 1 for x=0.015, 0.03 and 0.06 alloys is considered to result from a fraction of Fe in excess showing a superparamagnetic behavior. The doublet 2 is considered to result from the Fe substituted for Ni in the $Mg_2Ni$ phase. The values of isomer shift 0.24 ~ 0.28 mm/s suggest that the iron exist in the state $Fe^{+3}$. The result that the quadrapole splitting of the doublet 2 is not zero shows that the distribution of electrons around the iron is asymmetric. Their values for the doublet 2, 1.20 ~ 1.38 mm/s, approach the value of quadrapole for the oxidation number +3. The six-line showing the magnetic hyperfine interactions results from the iron which has not substituted the nickel in the $Mg_2Ni$ phase. The $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra of the hydrided alloys with x=0.015 and 0.03 show six-line. This suggests that the iron segregates with the hydriding reaction. The analysis results of the $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectrum, the variation of magnetization with magnetic field, Auger electron spectroscopy and electron diffraction show the segregation of Ni and the formation of MgO. This is considered to result from the reaction of the $Mg_2Ni$ phase with the oxygen contained in the hydrogen as impurity.
