백화점 이용고객의 명품브랜드 선호도 유형에 따른 구매행태 분석 (An Analysis of Purchase Behaviors of Department Store Users based on Types of Preference for Luxury Brands)

  • Purpose - With the increase in fervor to purchase luxury brands, new social problems have arisen, such as excessive preoccupation with luxury brands and high preference for forged luxury goods. Therefore, the issues related to luxury brands, termed "Luxury Syndrome," have emerged as an area of great interest for researchers and practitioners. However, previous studies neglect to categorize this preference for luxury brands. Therefore, this study aims to identify the different purchasing behaviors of consumers using the types of luxury brands preferences as parameters. Research design, data, and methodology - This study arranges a causal relationship model assuming that purchase behaviors positively (+) affect typified preference for luxury brands and purchase intentions. We administered a questionnaire survey to the purchasers who bought luxury brands from department stores to secure additional data necessary to verify the hypotheses in this study. We then processed the data using SPSS 19.0. We further analyzed the basic data using frequency and descriptive statistical analysis, and verified the measurement tools through feasibility and reliability analyses. Moreover, this study uses multiple regression analysis to verify the hypotheses. Further, this study tests the path effect between luxury brand purchase attitude and purchase behavior, with non-intrinsic preference and intrinsic preference as the mediating variables. Results - Based on the results, the impact of tendencies of conspicuous consumption and self-monitoring on non-intrinsic preference was significantly positive (+), while the impact of tendencies of pursuit of a reference group, conspicuous consumption, and self-monitoring on intrinsic preference and purchase intentions was significantly positive (+). Further, non-intrinsic and intrinsic preferences positively (+) influence purchase intentions and the impact of non-intrinsic preference took an absolute portion. However, the tendency of dependence on brands negatively (-) impacts purchase intentions. The results showed that self-monitoring and conspicuous consumption tendencies have greater effect on purchase intention, which is mediated by non-intrinsic preference. In contrast, reference group following tendency has a greater effect on purchase intention, which is mediated by intrinsic preference. Conclusions - Based on the results, the study verifies that the consumption of luxury brands in Korea has not yet entered the settling period. The tendency for conspicuous consumption and the tendency for pursuit of the reference group were relatively important aspects for the consumers who prefer luxury brands non-intrinsically and intrinsically, respectively. Especially, it was found that the purchase intentions for forged brands originate from the tendency to depend on brands. Based on these findings, this study suggests the measures to develop and mature the luxury brands market, and reinforce marketing performance at the three levels, that is, government, distributors, and manufacturers. The luxury brands manufacturers should devote themselves to the production and design of products to catch the attention of mature consumers of luxury brands. The luxury brands distributors should then raise the level of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) for opinion leaders. Finally, the Government should prepare effective policies for the development of luxury brands and provide a variety of economic support.

  • 이 연구는 20대 후반에서 30대 초반 여성들의 명품 가방 소비를 통해 이들 세대가 경험하는 한국 사회를 비판적으로 독해하고자 하였다. 그간 명품 소비에 관한 기존의 연구에서 주목해 왔던 요소들은 기호와 상징으로서 명품의 가치와 소비자의 특성, 계급적 정체성, 혹은 이상적인 자기 이미지 구성 차원의 표현적 행위 등에 관한 분석에 국한된 측면이 존재한다. 이 연구는 이러한 요소들을 다루면서, 동시에 일상을 영위하고 구성해 나가는 삶의 양식과 실천, 기회와 한계란 측면에서 이들의 소비를 고찰함으로써 현상적으로 드러나는 개인적 소비 이면의 사회구조적 맥락에 대한 이해를 확장하고자 하였다. 특히 연구 대상자들의 삶에서 명품 가방이 미디어로 재현되는 방식에 주목해, 그것이 다시 소비로 순환되는 과정을 통해 자본주의적 일상과 주체, 그리고 사회에 관해 성찰적으로 논의하고자 하였다.

중국 중서부 지역(운남성) 대학생들의 소비행동 연구(제1보): 물질주의성향에 따른 소비자태도와 의복구매행동분석 (A Study of College Students' Consumption Behavior from the Midwest(Yunnam) in China(Part I): The Effects of Materialism on the Consumers's Attitudes and Clothing Purchase Behaviors)

  • This study investigates the effect of demographics and materialism on the consumers's attitudes and clothing purchase behaviors. The subjects compose of 302 college students living in Yunnam, China. The mean, ANOVA, factor analysis, Duncan test were used for statistics analysis. According to our results, the factors of materialism, symbolic consumptions, and attitude toward fashion luxury products are identified: three factors of materialism (success symbols, practical living, and happiness pursuing), three factors of symbolic consumption (conspicuous, hedonic, communication), and five factors of attitudes toward fashion luxury products (quality, involvement, ostentation, luxurious aspect, pleasure). Among the demographics, gender, income, social stratification, father's education and job influenced the symbolic consumption, and desire's fashion luxury products. In addition, gender, income, social stratification, father's education and job influence the clothing selection standards and the extent of using fashion informations. Lastly, symbolic consumption, attitudes toward fashion luxury products, and apparel purchasing behaviors all proven to be significantly different among the 3 groups of materialism.

명품구매경험에 따른 명품구매행동분석 (Study on Consumer Purchase Behavior Based on Purchase Experience of Luxury Goods)

  • This study explores diverse consumer characteristics pursuant to whether the consumers in question have purchased luxury goods, and it also explores the variables that tend to influence such purchases. Furthermore, the relationship between consumers' purchases of, propensity for and preference toward luxury goods is researched, and an analysis is also conducted on the degrees of influence that consumer purchases of luxury goods have on consumer propensity and preference for luxury goods. The results show that the experience of such purchases determines the diverse characteristics of consumers in such areas as age, expenditures and overseas travel. In addition, the propensity of consumers to buy luxury goods is related to the tendency toward trends, self-planning, rationality and economic efficiency, while the preference of consumers is linked to the tendency toward trends, self-realization and rationality. This study aims to analyze and understand the consumer group of college women in their 20s, and it also seeks to help establish policies that will provide consumer education so badly needed by such women who are or who will be the main players of their respective household economies and rates of consumption.

Shopping for Oneself : Motives and Orientations of Small Luxury Purchase as Self-Gifting

  • Small luxury purchase as self-gifting is one of the latest consumer trends in self-gifting. Although this consumption trend continues to grow in various fields, little research has been conducted on related consumer behavior. As such, this study was conducted to empirically investigate the current consumer behavior involved in purchase of small luxury self-gifts. The objectives of this study are to determine the current status of self-gifts markets, identify motives and orientations of self-gifting, and investigate the effects of the motives on self-gifts orientations. A total of 199 respondents were used in data analyses. Regarding motives for self-gifting, four motives - self-comfort, self-reward, anxiety, and showing off - were identified; regarding self-gifting orientations, five factors - rationalization (emotional comfort, product attributes, self-defense, and conformity) and the luxury being within one's spending limit - were identified. The study determined the effects of the motives on the orientations, and the effects of the motives and the orientations on post-purchase consumer reaction. This study conducted an empirical investigation on small luxury self-gifting and moreover, the study determined the motives, orientations, and consequences of self-gifting, which have not yet been explained in the literature.

The Emergence of New Conspicuous Consumption

  • Purpose - Conspicuous consumption is the public display of wealth to impress others. In this study, consumption patterns by social class and economic development of countries were theoretically examined. Research design, Data, and Methodology - A qualitative approach of historical investigation and literature review was employed to identify current trends and emerging phenomena in the areas of consumer behavior and conspicuous consumption. Result - The main participants of conspicuous consumption have changed from the upper class in developing countries to the middle class in developed countries. While the main purpose of conspicuous consumption, that is, achieving higher status, remains unchanged, a leisure upper class has emerged as a new consumer group for conspicuous consumption in developed countries. Conclusions - To satisfy consumers'demands for new conspicuous consumption, marketers are encouraged to offer luxury experience and hybrid products.

중고(中古) 명품(名品) 사이트의 운영실태(運營實態)와 소비자(消費者) 특성(特性)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究) (The Study on Consumer in Second Hand Luxury Market)

  • The purposes of this study were to review the management systems of internet web sites dealing with 'second hand luxury goods', examine purchasing motives and the level of satisfaction, and identify the differences of consumers' characteristics between purchasers and non-purchasers. 8 representative internet web sites were investigated. And 80 purchasers and 94 non-purchasers were surveyed using questionnaires. The data were analyzed using t-test and frequency analysis. The results were as followings: 1) Most purchasers of second hand luxury goods were women aged 20's. They used internet web sites to purchase real luxury goods more cheaply and were satisfied with their purchase behavior; 2) Both purchasers and non-purchasers of second hand luxury goods got high scores for the self-esteem and the propensity of materialism and conspicuous consumption which were above average. But both of them were less influenced by reference group; and 3) The propensity of materialism and the preference to name brands of purchasers were higher than those of non-purchasers.

The Concept of Luxury Brands and the Relationship between Consumer and Luxury Brands

  • The study aims to articulate a definition of luxury brands, to propose a framework for consumer luxury brand relationships and to provide empirical evidence of the proposed model. The study conducted two surveys in Portugal and the United States in 2009 and 2013 for selected luxury brands. The study employs factor analysis and structural equation modelling techniques to test the hypotheses. The study finds a link between luxury products and consumer's psychological association represents in a hierarchical order of: cognitive attributes at its base level, extrinsic attributes on a secondary level and intrinsic attributes at the advance level. The findings suggest a concept for luxury brands from three dimensions of: luxury product characteristics, consumer's psychological characteristics, and consumer's psychological association with the luxury product. The research was conducted in Portugal and the United States so that there is always a potential criticism concerning the ability to generalize research results to a broader international population. The findings provide a holistic perspective in the understanding of luxury brand constructs and a definition of luxury brands in the way why consumers involve symbolic consumption. The successful application of the findings in a brand setting would be of particular interest to marketers and brand strategists.

명품브랜드 소비자의 재 구매의도에 미치는 영향 분석 -온라인 해외직업구매 이용동기, 행동의도, 위험지각을 중심으로- (An Analysis of the Effects of Luxury Brand Consumers on the Re-purchase Intentions, Behavioral and Risk Perception)

  • The purpose of this study was to define the purchase behavior of online luxury fashion brand consumers that soon became new luxury consumption trends. To investigate online luxury fashion brand consumer's purchase behavior, three variables were suggested based on advanced researches. These variables include economic value, item variety and pleasure. Purchasing luxury online was not common but as cross-border online shopping market became popular, consumers began to purchase luxury items through online shopping platforms. Preliminary surveys was conducted on 20~40-year-old consumers who have experience in online shopping for luxurious items. Total 238 questionnaires were used for analysis. By using SPSS, frequency analysis, factor analysis, reliability analysis, correlation analysis, regression analysis, t-test and ANOVA were conducted. The results of the study were as follow; first, consumer's purchase behavior appeared to be influenced by the order of pleasure of shopping, economic value and item variety. Repurchase intention appeared to be affected by the order of economic value, item variety, and pleasure of shopping. Second, online luxury fashion consumers perceived that risk does not affect purchase intention and repurchase intention. Third, as purchase intention increases, repurchase intention also increases. Fourth, shopping value, age and channel risk also indicated meaningful differences. As an early study of luxury fashion brand products purchased directly online, the academic significance can facilitate an overall understanding of consumer behavior such as usage motive, risk perception, behavioral intention.

패션명품 소비가치가 브랜드 관계유지의도에 미치는 영향 -명품 구매액과 구매브랜드 수에 따른 세분시장별 분석- (The Effect of Fashion Luxury Consumption Values on the Intention to Maintain Brand Relationships -Differences among Segmented Markets Based on Purchasing Patterns-)

  • This study identifies the fashion luxury customer segments grouped by expenditures and the number of purchasing brands to verify the effects of perceived luxury consumption values on the intention to maintain a brand relationship for each group. A survey questionnaire was developed and implemented to collect data to measure fashion luxury expenditures, number of purchasing brands, luxury customer values, intention to maintain brand relationships, and demographic variables. A total of 326 responses were analyzed by factor analysis, multiple regression, one-way ANOVA, and $X^2$ analysis with SPSS18.0. Respondents were grouped by luxury expenditures; in addition, the number of purchasing brands were grouped into four segments of Switching/Heavy (31.6%), Switching/Light (19.9%), Loyal/Heavy (31.3%), and Loyal/Light (7.2%) Customer Group, that was different in terms of age and marital status. When the luxury customer value for the most patronized luxury brand was factor analyzed, five distinctive sub dimensions were identified, such as Social Value, Aesthetic/Expressive Value, Experiential Value, Quality Value, and Economic Value. For the Loyal/Heavy Group, the Experiential Value had a significant effect on the customer intention to maintain a brand relationship. For the Loyal/Light group, the Aesthetic /Expressive and Economic Value had a significant effect, and for the Switching/Heavy and Switching/Light Group, Quality and Economic Value had a significant effect on the customer intention to maintain a brand relationship. In conclusion, each luxury customer value in the behavioral segments works differently in influencing the intention to maintain a brand relationship. In addition, the implications for retail strategy were discussed based on the findings.
