  • The ADF-S (AKARI Deep Field - South) toward South Ecliptic Pole is one of the deep survey fields designed for the study of Extragalactic Background Light (EBL). The deep extragalactic survey was initiated by AKARI far-infrared deep observations. Other space missions (e.g., Euclid, NISS, SPHEREx) will perform the deep observations in the ADF-S. Based upon the recent optical survey with KMTNet, we can identify the optical counterparts for dusty star-forming galaxies such as ULIRG, DOG, SMG. Among them, the Dust-Obscured Galaxies (hereafter DOGs with f(24um)/f(R) > 1,000) in the heavily obscured system are expected to play an important role in the formation of most massive galaxies. We have newly discovered ~100 DOGs in ~12 sq. deg. of the ADF-S from our optical survey with KMTNet. We also confirmed that some of DOGs host the most luminous AGN for their black hole masses through the near-infrared spectroscopic follow-ups. Here, we report the properties of high-z hyperluminous DOGs in the ADF-S.

  • YAG phosphor powders were fabricated by the atmospheric plasma spraying method with the spray-dried spherical YAG precursor. The YAG precursor slurry for the spray drying process was prepared by the PVA solution chemical processing utilizing a domestic easy-sintered aluminum oxide (Al2O3) powder as a seed. The homogenous and viscous slurry resulted in dense granules, not hollow or porous particles. The synthesized phosphor powders demonstrated a stable YAG phase, and excellent fluorescence properties of approximately 115% compared with commercial YAG:Ce3+ powder. The microstructure of the phosphor powder had a perfect spherical shape and an average particle size of approx imately 30 ㎛. As a result of the PKG test of the YAG phosphor powder, the synthesized phosphor powders exhibited an outstanding luminous intensity, and a peak wavelength was observed at 531 nm.

  • 4C39.25 (0923+392) is a distant radio loud AGN placed at redshift 0.695. The motivation of our work is peculiar properties 4C39.25. Firstly, it has a conspicuous distinction of jet direction between kilo-parsec scale observation made by VLA (Kollgaard et al. 1990) and the parsec scale observation by VLBA (Kellermann et al. 1998). This might indicate episodic-jet activity which recently turned on. This object currently shows two stationary compact parsec-scale components which are bright jet component on east and less luminous core on west. Also, it is known that there have been superluminal jet components which are flowing from the core toward east, and then merging with the bright jet component (Marscher et al. 1991, Alberdi et al. 2000, Lister et al. 2013). Although 4C39.25 seems to be a blazar-like source having broad emission lines (SDSS) and superluminal motion, its property that jet component is brighter than the core is different from ordinary blazars. Furthermore, it has young radio galaxy-like properties such as non-variation in total flux (Alberdi et al. 1997, 2000, MOJAVE database) and high frequency peak at spectral energy distribution (Orienti et al 2007). Such complex properties led us to make recent observations to reveal precise properties and new changes of the source. We used Korean VLBI Network (KVN) and VLBI Exploration of Radio Astronomy (VERA) Array (KaVA) which provide high-frequency (23GHz and 43GHz) and high spatial resolution (1.2mas and 0.6mas). Therefore, this system is suitable for morphological and physical research on parsec scale structure. We present results for several epochs observed during 2013 to 2014, mainly focusing on morphological changes of 4C39.25 using KaVA images.

  • TOPO/TOP capped CdSe nanoparticles were synthesized via thermal-solvent method. The 540 nm green and 620 nm red emitting CdSe nanoparticles were obtained by controlling the reaction time and temperature. Phosphor conversion white LED was produced combining a 460 nm emitting InGaN LED chip as an excitation source with 540 and 620 nm CdSe nanoparticles as phosphors. The single or double phosphor layer was fabricated by mixing with epoxy, and investigated the effects on the luminous properties of the white LED. The single phosphor layer white LED showed 5.78 lm/W with CIE of (0.36, 0.45) in reddish white, and the double phosphor layer white LED showed 7.28 lm/W with that of (0.32, 0.34) in pure white at 20 mA. When the 400 nm near-UV LED was applied to optical pumping source, the luminous efficiency of white LED was enhanced to 8.76 lm/W.

  • Two white light emitting diodes(LEDs) were fabricated by using two kinds of yellow phosphor, YAG:Ce and $(Sr,Ba)_2SiO4:Eu$, and their spectroscopic properties were analyzed as a function of temperature from room temperature to $80^{\circ}C$. The asymmetric double sigmoidal function was applied to both blue and yellow peaks of the emitting spectrum to obtain the center wavelength, the amplitude, the half width, and the skewness parameters. According to this analysis, the center wavelength of the blue peak shifted to longer wavelength while that of the yellow peak shifted to shorter wavelength. In addition, some of the skewness parameters were found to increase upon heating, which indicates that spectrum asymmetry becomes enhanced at higher temperatures. The changes in the color coordinates and the luminous efficacy were larger for the case of silicate-based white LED. These results suggest that the silicate-based white LED is inferior to the YAG-based white LED from the viewpoint of color stability, efficacy and color rendering index.

  • In this study, phosphor ceramics were fabricated, and optical properties were analyzed for application to nextgeneration automotive laser headlamps by using a spherical YAG : Ce phosphor with a garnet structure synthesized based on the spray drying method. The thickness of phosphor ceramic using spherical YAG : Ce phosphor was obtained with 100 ㎛, 150 ㎛, and 200 ㎛ to investigate the effect of thickness on optical properties such as light conversion efficiency, heat dissipation, luminance and color temperature. The results of this study are expected to play a significant role in the manufacturing process for the fabrication of phosphor ceramic by solving issues such as the high cost and low yield in the conventional liquid method to manufacture YAG : Ce nano fluorescent materials.

  • The aim of this work is to investigate the effect of $Ca_xSr_{2-x}$ and activator on the structural and luminescent properties of green-emitting $Ca_xSr_{2-x}SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ nano phosphor. Using urea as fuel and ammonium nitrate as oxidizer, $Ca_xSr_{2-x}SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ has been successfully synthesized, using a combustion method. The particles were found to be small, spherical and of round surface. SEM imagery showed that the phosphors particles are of nanosize. The $Ca_xSr_{2-x}SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ emission spectrum for 360 nm excitation showed a single band, with a peak at 490 nm, which is a green emission. The highest luminous intensity was at $1,000^{\circ}C$, which was obtained when the $Eu^{2+}$ content (y) was 0.05. The results support the application of $Ca_xSr_{2-x}SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor as a fluorescent material for ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs). Characteristics of the synthesized $Ca_xSr_{2-x}SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$ phosphor were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and photoluminescence (PL) detection.

  • Over the last decade, more than 50 quasars have been discovered at redshift about 6 when reionization of the universe occurred. However, most of them are luminous quasars (zAB < 21 mag), implying that such a biased quasar sample, which cannot represent the entire population of quasars at z~6, is not enough to understand the properties of quasars in the early universe. Recently, we have been performing the Infrared Medium-deep Survey (IMS), a moderately wide (120 deg2) and deep (JAB ~ 22.5 - 23 mag) near-infrared imaging survey. Combining this with the optical (ugriz) imaging data from the CFHT Legacy Survey (CFHTLS), we have identified more than 10 faint quasar candidates at z~6 in the IMS field by using multiple color selection criteria. From now on, we will perform spectroscopic confirmations of these faint quasar candidates with IMACS on the Magellan Baade Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory and GMOS on the Gemini South Telescope at Gemini Observatory. The confirmed quasars will be used to constrain the faint-end slope of the quasar luminosity function at z~6 and calculate the ratio of quasar ionizing flux to required flux for reionization of the universe. Moreover, these confirmed quasars will be followed up with near-infrared spectroscopy to determine their black hole masses and Eddington ratios to check the rapidness of their growth.

  • The missing historical record of the Cassiopeia A (Cas A) supernova (SN) event implies a large extinction to the SN, possibly greater than the interstellar extinction to the current SN remnant. Here we investigate the possibility that the guest star that appeared near Cas A in 1592-1593 in Korean history books could have been an 'impostor' of the Cas A SN, i.e., a luminous transient that appeared to be a SN but did not destroy the progenitor star, with strong mass loss to have provided extra circumstellar extinction. We first review the Korean records and show that a spatial coincidence between the guest star and Cas A cannot be ruled out, as opposed to previous studies. Based on modern astrophysical findings on core-collapse SN, we argue that Cas A could have had an impostor and derive its anticipated properties. It turned out that the Cas A SN impostor must have been bright ($M_V=-14.7{\pm}2.2mag$) and an amount of dust with visual extinction of ${\geq}2.8{\pm}2.2mag$ should have formed in the ejected envelope and/or in a strong wind afterwards. The mass loss needs to have been spherically asymmetric in order to see the light echo from the SN event but not the one from the impostor event.

  • Generally Lighting system consists of lamp and luminaire. When a fluorescent lamp is installed in luminaire, power and light output is changed by ambient temperature. Particularly electrodeless lamp depends on the changes that are mercury pressure with amalgam temperature and magnetic properties with ferrite temperature. It has finally influence on optical efficiency. In this study, the temperature change of ferrite and cold spot, vessel are measured at transitional state and then same characteristics are measured with increase of ambient temperature. At transitional state, luminous flux is related to temperature change of cold spot that compare with behavior of mercury pressure and light output. At increase of ambient temperature, we analyzed change that efficiency and electrical, optical characteristics of electrodeless lamp are related to ferrite core and cold spot temperature.
