There is provided white light illumination system including a radiation source, a first luminescent material having a peak emission wavelength of about 575 to about 620 nm, a second luminescent material having a peak emission wavelength of about 495 to about 550 nm, which is different from the first luminescent material and a third luminescent material having a peak emission wavelength of about 420 to about 480 nm, which is different from the first and second luminescent materials. The LED may be a UV LED and the luminescent materials may be a blend of three phosphors. A human observer perceives the combination of the blue, green and red phosphor emissions as white light.

We have designed and developed novel luminescent lanthanide complexes for advanced photonics applications. Lanthanide(III) ions (Ln$^{3+}$) were encapsulated by the luminescent ligands such as metalloporphyrins and naphthalenes. The energy levels of the luminescent ligands were tailored to maintain the effective energy transfer process from luminescent ligands to Ln$^{3+}$ ions for getting a higher optical amplification gain. Also, key parameters for emission enhancement and efficient energy transfer pathways for the sensitization of Ln$^{3+}$ ions by luminescent ligands were investigated. Furthermore, to enhance the optophysical properties of novel luminescent Ln$^{3+}$ complexes, aryl ether-functionalized dendrons as photon antennas have been incorporated into luminescent Ln$^{3+}$ complexes, yielding novel Ln(III)-cored dendrimer complex. The novel Ln(III)-cored dendrimer complex has much higher PL intensity than the corresponding simple complex, due to the efficient site-isolation effect. In this article, we will deal with recent progress in the synthesis and photophysical studies of inert and stable luminescent Ln$^{3+}$ complexes for advanced photonics applications. Also, our review will include the exploratory investigation of the key parameters for emission enhancement and the effective energy transfer pathways from luminescent ligands to Ln$^{3+}$ ions with Ln(III)-chelated prototype complexes.
In this study, we attempt to synthesize the $Sr_{3}SiO_{5}:Eu$ yellow phosphor by sol-gel technique. Based on the blue emitting diodes as primary light source, white light emitting diodes have been manufactured using the $Sr_{3}SiO_{5}:Eu$ yellow phosphor as the luminescent material. Luminescent efficiency of yellow phosphor as well as that of blue LED is very important factor to enhance the luminescent efficiency of white LED. In order to improve the luminescent efficiency, we have synthesized the $Sr_{3}SiO_{5}:Eu$ phosphor by sol-gel technique. To research optimum condition of gelation reaction, the ratio of $H_{2}O$ to TEOS was fixed as 60:1. When the drying temperature was at $100^{\circ}C$, emission intensity was better than at $70^{\circ}C$. The critical $Eu^{2+}$ concentration was estimated to be about 0.05 mol and sintering temperature at $1300^{\circ}C$ was indicated best emission intensity.
Luminescent lanthanide complexes have been overviewed for advanced photonics applications. Lanthanide(III) ions ($Ln^{3+}$) were encapsulated by the luminescent ligands such as metalloporphyrins, naphthalenes, anthracene, push-pull diketone derivatives and boron dipyrromethene(bodipy). The energy levels of the luminescent ligands were tailored to maintain the effective energy transfer process from luminescent ligands to $Ln^{3+}$ ions for getting a higher optical amplification gain. Also, key parameters for emission enhancement and efficient energy transfer pathways for the sensitization of $Ln^{3+}$ ions by luminescent ligands were investigated. Furthermore, to enhance the optophysical properties of novel luminescent $Ln^{3+}$ complexes, aryl ether-functionalized dendrons as photon antennas have been incorporated into luminescent $Ln^{3+}$ complexes, yielding novel $Ln^{3+}$-cored dendrimer complex such as metalloporphyrins, naphthalenes, and anthracenes bearing the Fr$\acute{e}$chet aryl-ether dendrons, namely, ($Er^{3+}-[Gn-Pt-Por]_3$ (terpy), $Er^{3+}-[Gn-Naph]_3$(terpy) and $Er^{3+}-[Gn-An]_3$(terpy)). These complexs showed much stronger near-IR emission bands at 1530 nm, originated from the 4f-4f electronic transition of the first excited state ($^4I_{13/2}$) to the ground state ($^4I_{15/2}$) of the partially filled 4f shell. A significant decrease in the fluorescence of metalloporphyrins, naphthalenes and anthracene ligand were accompanied by a strong increase in the near IR emission of the $Ln^{3+}$ ions. The near IR emission intensities of $Ln^{3+}$ ions in the lanthanide(III)-encapsulated dendrimer complexes were dramatically enhanced with increasing the generation number (n) of dendrons, due to the site-isolation and the light-harvesting(LH) effects. Furthermore, it was first attempted to distinguish between the site-isolation and the light-harvesting effects in the present complexes. In this review, synthesis and photophysical studies of inert and stable luminescent $Ln^{3+}$ complexes will be dealt for the advanced photonics applications. Also, the review will include the exploratory investigation of the key parameters for emission enhancement and the effective energy transfer pathways from luminescent ligands to $Ln^{3+}$ ions with $Ln^{3+}$-chelated prototype complexes.

The thiogallate phosphors which are well known for a long time as phosphor materials for CRT or EL device were reported. Those have high luminescent properties at long-wavelength region. Among those phosphors, the samples with divalent europium doped CaGa2S4 were prepared by a simple process under the reduction atmosphere $(5%\;H_2/\;95%\;N_2)$ without toxic gas such as H2S or CS2. The prepared phosphor shows a higher luminescent efficiency (about 120%) than that of $YAG:Ce^{3+}$ phosphor. Consequently, this phosphor is possible to be applicable to white LED lamp because of the high luminescent efficiency.
In this paper, we describe the luminescent properties of the phosphors synthesized via sol-gel technique. When the phosphor prepared by sol-gel technique, reaction factors, such as pH condition, $R_w$ and drying temperature affected the luminescent intensity, particle size and morphology of final product. Therefore, we attempt to control these reaction factors in order to improve the luminescent efficiency of phosphors. As a result of our study, when the acid catalyst (HCl) was used, emission intensity was higher than the case of base catalyst $(NH_4OH)$. The product prepared at $R_w=60$ indicated the maximum intensity. As the increase of the $R_w$ value, the particle was agglomerated and emission intensity was decreased. Finally, optimum drying temperature of gel was found to be$ 180^{\circ}C$.
Effects of doping concentration and annealing atmosphere on the luminescent properties of $Er^{3+}$ doped ZnO phosphor powders were investigated. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of ZnO:Er exhibit an orange emission band at around 575 nm, while those of pure ZnO show a green emission at 520 nm. Emission difference between ZnO:Er and pure ZnO is attributed to the energy transfer of Er ions in ZnO. The highest PL intensity is obtained by doping 1 mol% Er to ZnO. Luminescent properties of ZnO:Er phosphors annealed at $N_2$+vacuum atmosphere are superior to those annealed at $N_2$ atmosphere.
Nitride Phosphors have recently been considered as a novel class of luminescent materials for white LEDs due to their promising luminescent properties. It is of great importance to tailor the emission color in order to meet the requirements for practical applications. The paper presents the results of tuning the emission colors of sialon phosphors through compositional tailoring.
