  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of normal veiling reflection on the human visibility during visual tasks. The apparent task luminance and the apparent background luminance contrast were determined by the levels of the normal veiling reflection luminance and the interior illuminance of the visual target. The semantic differential methodology was used for the ergonomic evaluation of the conditions of experiment which were consisted of the apparent task luminance and the apparent background luminance contrast. Twelve subjects (6 male and 6 female) were participated in this study to perform the tasks which were consisted of 40 experimental conditions. And each condition was repeated 4 times.

  • In recent, displays have very good properties at high luminance, fast response, and size. Also They have good quality in terms of color according to the development of the gamut extension and color reproduction. However, despite these merits, there is a characteristic that at a high luminance display, observer perceive the different color from the originally re-producted color due to the change of perceived luminance in human visual system. In this paper, we propose a model that is the hue shift phenomenon between a normal display and a high luminance display, and then an algorithm which compensate the color between two devices, so that observer can perceive the same color.

  • Many researches showed that perceived image contrast increases as the relative surround luminance increases. However, most experiments were conducted under limited surround conditions. In this research, a psychophysical experiment was conducted to investigate the change in perceived image contrast under wide range of surround luminance up to 1820 cd/$m^2$. A large area illuminator was used as a backlight. It consists of 23 dimmable fluorescent lamps and a sheet of diffuser. The luminance could be adjusted to 7 different surround ratios: 0, 0.3, 0.56, 0.96, 2.24, 5.81, and 9.99. Results showed that perceived image contrast changes as a typical band-pass shape and the maximum contrast is found near $S_R$=1.

  • To suggest lighting regulations to prevent light pollution, domestic and international standards were analyzed and the luminance of outdoor signboards of main street at night was measured. In addition, to regulate the methods of luminance measurement, experiments on the measuring distance and direction from the signboards were conducted. The regulations were set as maximum luminance for outdoor signboard lightings of channel letter type, and limitations were suggested on each of the four lighting zones.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of luminance maps generated from five types of HDRI builder(High Dynamic Ranging Image builder) which include Photosphere, Bracket, Picturenaut, Luminance HDR and Photoshop. To accomplish this goal a set of experiments was conducted. In order to assess the luminance values of the HDR image from HDR image builder, the values had to be compared to the ones obtained from imaging photometer. After comparing measured luminance data using imaging photometer with those retrieved from the HDR images, Photosphere error rate estimated at 3% below.

  • In a spatially interlaced stereoscopic (SIS) three-dimensional (3D) display to be realized by providing the observer a part of left-eye/right-eye images, a loss of information can be perceived due to the un-shown part of each image. In order to resolve that problem, an improved SIS 3D display is proposed to deliver the images without loss of information to the observer using a time-multiplexing scheme. However, that time-multiplexing SIS also has a problem of luminance distortion when the desired luminance is not shown due to an insufficient response of the liquid crystal cell. In this paper, we propose a new method by optimizing the image data to show correct luminance with minimum distortion.

  • The research investigated the interaction effect of video resolution and device luminance on the perceived characteristics, presence, and fatigue viewing virtual reality. Experiments were composed of mixed design, and the resolution and luminance were classified into three types, HD, 2K, and 4K, and 20, 60, and 100, respectively. Participants watched video of 6-minutes randomly, and responded to the questionnaire after watching each video. The results showed that no interaction effect existed. Meanwhile, there are statistically significant differences on the luminance of depth perception, the resolution of visual intervention, and the resolution of adjustment fatigue. Also, higher resolution and luminance showed higher cognitive function, presence and fatigue.

  • According to the tendency of energy efficiency and environment-friendly chracteristics, demend of High-efficiency lighting using LED(Light Emitting Diode)are being increased actively and applied in various fields. However, In order to adequate application of LED light sources, it is necessary to lighting environment and luminous characteristics of LED light sources. This Study aims to characterize the work-plane lighting environment by LED light sources comparing with fluorescent light sources which are widely used. For the sake of this study, a fluorescent light source and 5 LED light sources were introduced and luminance and correlated color temperature were measured to evaluate luminance contrast. The experimental model is Mock-up which is $4.9m{\times}7.2m$ with a height of 2.9m. The test room was set up partition and desks. Luminance and correlated color temperature were measured work-plane on the desk which was set up local lighting by the Radiant Imaging ProMetric 1400. The optical characteristics data of LED can give a lot of advantages to design LED lighting appliances. Hereafter, the object of research will be conducted to evaluate effects of LED light sources on working performance, survey of visual performance, preference and physiology of subjects.

  • Need of a dimmer function becomes more important with increasing interest on a HDTV for home theater applications. In a conventional ac PDP, a possible method to reduce luminance of a whole panel is to reduce a total number of sustain pulses and then to change the gray level. However, the reduction of the total sustain number causes the step of luminance to be rough Moreover, it is impossible to control the luminance of the panel for a given gray level. In this paper, a simple and robust method is proposed to control linearly the luminance of whole panel by applying the asymmetric sustain pulses in the display period of the ADS driving scheme. As the range of luminance control by the proposed method is about 50% for a given gray level. Moreover, it is experimentally verified that the proposed method shows similar dynamic margin performances compare with the conventional method.

  • Due to light condition or shadow around camera, acquired image sequence is often degraded by intensity fluctuation. This artifact is called luminance flicker. As the luminance flicker corrupts the performance of motion estimation or object detection, it should be corrected before further processing. In this paper, we analyze the flicker generation model and propose the new algorithm for flicker reduction. The proposed algorithm considers gain and offset parameter separately, and stabilizes the luminance fluctuation based on these parameters. We show the performance of the proposed method by testing on the sequence with artificially added luminance flicker and real sequence with object motion.
