  • The dielectric permittance and the dielectric loss factor of several lubricating oils were measured at frequencies from 100 Hz to 1.5 MHz. The measurements were carried out under atmospheric pressure as a function of temperature and under fixed temperature as a function of pressure. Temperature and pressure dependence of dielectric relaxation time were investigated. The temperature dependence of relaxation time obeyed the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) law. We modified the VFT equation in order to express the dielectric relaxation time as a function of temperature and pressure. Furthermore. by taking into consideration the similarity of the temperature and pressure dependence between dielectric relaxation and mechanical relaxation. the prediction of high-pressure viscosity were conducted. The predicted results were compared with the viscosity data obtained from the falling-sphere type viscometer.

  • This study represents the newly advanced formulation of hydraulic fluids for extended drain interval and introduces the performance results of used oil samples from various excavators. The used oil samples, in this paper, show that there is a sharp change in viscosity drop and moderate additive depletion. For the extension of hydraulic fluid life. it is necessary to improve the stability of viscosity and oxidation. New target properties from the used oil analysis were proposed for extended life. Hydraulic oil with the viscosity index of 140 and improved thermal stability consists of group III base oil, showed the possibility of extension of fluid life.

  • Friction between the sheet and tools is one of the important factors affecting the sheet metal forming. Therefore, the clarification of the friction is essential to improve the formability of the sheet. In order to find the effect of material property and lubricant viscosity on the frictional characteristics, tensile test, surface roughness test and friction test are performed. The results showed that friction characteristics are mainly influenced by the surface roughness and lubricant viscosity. A mathematical model of the friction is developed for calculating friction coefficient in terms of surface roughness and lubricant viscosity. The validity and accuracy of the mathematical model of the friction are verified through the experiment and FEM analysis.

  • In this study, a numerical analysis f3r the piston secondary dynamics and lubrication characteristics of small refrigeration reciprocating compressors is presented. In general, the length of cylinder in this class of compressors is shortened to diminish the frictional losses of the piston-cylinder system. So, the contacting length between piston and cylinder wall is in variable with the rotating crank angle around the BDC of the reciprocating piston. In the problem formulation of the piston dynamics, the change in bearing length of the piston and all corresponding forces and moments are considered in order to determine the piston trajectory, velocity and acceleration at each step. A Newton-Raphson procedure was employed in solving the secondary dynamic equations of the piston. The developed computer program can be used to calculate the entire piston trajectory and the hydrodynamic forces and moments as functions of crank angle under compressor running conditions. The results explored the effects of the radial clearance, lubricant viscosity, and pin location on the stability of the piston, the oil leakage, and friction losses.

  • Most studies of elsatohydrodynamic lubrication are oriented only to the measurement of film thickness itself with optical interferometer. In order to exactly investigate the tribological characteristics of a certain lubricant, it is also important to get the information of traction behaviors as well. In this work, we developed a device for measuring the friction force of ehl contact condition as well as the film thickness. To verify the validity of the measuring system, the friction forces and film thicknesses under ehl condition are simultaneously measured with the variations of additive ratios of viscosity index improvers which cause non-linear tendencies of film thickness to contact velocity.

  • In this study, using the governing equation for thermohydrodyamic lubrication involving the homogeneous mixture of incompressible fluid derived by based on the principle of continuum mechanics, it is discussed the effects of water within engine oil on the performance of high speed journal bearing of a turbocharger. The governing equations are the general equations being able to be applied on the mixture of Newtonian fluid and non- Newtonian fluid. Here, the fluid viscosity index, n of power-law non-Newtonian fluid is supposed to be 1 for the application of the journal bearing in a turbocharger lubricated with the mixture of two Newtonian fluid, for example, water within engine oil. The results related with the bearing performance are shown that the bearing friction is to decrease and the side leakage and bearing load increase as increasing the water content in an engine oil.

  • This study examined the effects of surface roughness in the mixed lubrication regime of smooth and rough surfaces for roller bearings. The average flow model was adopted for interaction between the flow rheology of the lubricant and the surface roughness. The average Reynolds equation and related flow factor that describes the coupled effects of surface roughness and flow rheology, the viscosity-pressure and density-pressure equations, the elastic deformation equation, and the force balance equation were solved simultaneously. The results showed that the effects of surface roughness on the film thickness and pressure distribution should be considered, especially in elastohydrodynamic lubrication contact problems.

  • EHL analysis of connecting rod bearing is proposed which includes effects of temperature variation in lubrication film. Lubrication film temperature is treated as a time-dependent, two-dimensional variable which is averaged over the film thickness, while connecting rod big end temperature is assumed to be time-independent and three-dimensional. It is assumed that a portion of the heat generated by viscous dissipation in the lubrication film is absorbed by the film itself, and the remainder flows into the bearing surface. Mass-conserving cavitation algorithm is applied and the effect of variable viscosity is included to solve the Reynolds equation. Simulation results of the connecting rod bearing in internal combustion engine are presented. It is shown that the temperature variation has remarkable effects on the bearing performance. It is concluded that the EHL analysis considering effects of the temperature variation is strongly recommended to predict the connecting rod bearing performance in internal combustion engine.

  • The heat generations of angular contact ball bearings are studied experimentally with numerical simulations. The temperature variations of inner and outer races and the temperature increase distributions are measured by using thermocouples for the spindle rotational speeds, preloads, viscosity of oils, and lubrication methods. The measured values from experiments are used to estimate the heat generation rates. The heat generation is focused mainly on the dominant sources which are robbings due to spin and gyro-moments of bearing balls, applied load and viscous friction. Oil-jet and oil-air lubrication methods are adopted using oils with different viscosities.
