Considering the ways for the possible improvement of soil test for upland crops, various methods for the evaluation of K supplying power and testing of available soil K were reviewed in terms of theoretical principles and practical usefulness of the each method. The review was also made on the characteristics of upland crops in K requirement and on the chemical properties of major korean upland and lowland rice soils in terms of K availability. Following is the few remarks drawn from the review. 1. Quite large number of methods have been known for the evaluation of K supplying power and testing for available soil K. In nature, they can be divided into two categories; capacity-based methods and intensity-based methcds. The capacity-based methods usually measure the exchangeable and some portion of nonexchangeable K, while the intensity-based methods suggest to consider the ractivity ratios of major cations in soil solution and the energy requirement for the replacement of exchangeable soil K into soil solution. 2. As methodology for extraction of interested part of soil K, chemical extraction, electrodialysis and ion exchange methods have been known. Among these, chemical extract ion is favorable because of its simplicity. However, recently suggested Electro-Ultra-Filtration method seems to merit further study for wider use for not only K but also other nutrient availability of soils. 3. The intensity-based methods, although they are more theoretical, because of their complexity, in methods may not be adapted for practical soil tests. 4. The exchangeable K which is rather simple to measure and which well reflects the status of K reserve as nonexchangeable and is immediate pool of water soluble K may be good, if not best, criterion of soil K availability to plant in common soil testing. 5. Because there are evidences that the abundance of available K alone may not be good inclication for availability of K to plant, it is recommendable to interprete the exchangeable K data as percent saturation of exchangeable K to total C. E. C. of soil for the recommend ation of K fertilizer based on soil tests. 6. Some pot and field trial results showed the trends that percent potassium saturation to total C. E. C. better serve as the parameter for K fertilizer recommendation.
This study has been carried out to investigate the translocation-illuviation status of iron and manganese, which are striking phenomena in paddy soils, in relation to its morphological characteristics, and to find out a method to identify illuvial layer of iron quantitatively. Determination of active iron and easily reducible manganese content in surface soils of lowland paddy (266 samples) in Korea were conducted. The examination has been made on relationship between morphological, physico-chemical properties of the representative paddy soils (9 series) and iron and manganese content of their horizons. The results are summarized as follows. 1. The poorer the drainage, the higher concentration of active iron and easily reducible manganese were found, and under same drainage condition, the more the sand, the lower the content of them. 2. Irrespective of soil texture and drainage, highly signignificant positive correlation was found between the contents of active iron ($\hat{Y}$) and clay plus silt in surface soils. $$\hat{Y}=0.3929+(0.05352\;X\;clay%)+(0.0001023\;X\;silt%){\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;{\ldots}\;I$$ No correlation, however, was found between clay content and easily reducible manganese concentration. 3. Significant positive correlation was obtained between active iron ($\hat{Y}$) and total iron (x) content in each profiles of all soil series. Accumulation of iron and manganese generally can be found in paddy soils, but distinct accumulation was found under moderately well drained fine loamy and clay soils, while surface accumulation occurred under poor drainage without regard to soil texture. 5. Profile description or determination of active iron in each horizon were found to be insufficient to designate illuvial layer of iron. Therefore, identification of illuvial layer of iron based on the ratio of total iron and active iron, and concentration of active iron estimated by the content of clay plus silt (Equation 1 above) was thought to be reasonable. Also, manganese accumulation layer would be estimated by total manganese and easily reducible manganese content and their ratio.
The studies reported herein were conducted to investigate the effect of thermal conditions in double-cropping of rice. The accumulated daily mean and minimum air temperatures, for the period of the last 30 years, were examined at the 10 different meteorogical stations which are located in the southern part of Korea. The results obtained could be summarized as follows: 1. The first cropping. a. It seemed to be free from any frost-damage of rice at the seeding stage at Yeosu, Pusan and Cheju. However, it was found that there were some dangers of frost damage for about 30 to 40 day at Iri, Chonju and Kwangju, for 18 to 28 days at Daeku and Ulsan, and for 4 to 14 days at Mokpo and Pohang, respectively. b. The early critical transplanting date seemed to be from middle to late-April in the first cropping. As compared with the ordinary lowland seedlings, the semi-protected and upland ones could be planted 5 and 10 days earlier, respectively. c. The early critical heading date was about late-June and there were some low-temperature damages for 8 to 25 days at young-ear formation stage of rice plant, depending upon location. d. The early critical ripening date (the early critical transplanting date of the 2nd cropping) was from late-July to early-August. It took about 32 to 39 days in ripening. There was a tendency of SS${\fallingdotseq}$SL$15^{\circ}C$ (${\theta}$15) and the minimum of $10^{\circ}C$ (${\theta}$10), the ten locations could be devided into two ripening groups of ${\theta}$15>${\theta}$10 and ${\theta}$15<${\theta}$10. c. The late critical ripening date was around October 9 at Iri, Chonju, Kwangju and Daeku and around October 28 at Mokpo, Yeosu, Pusan and eheju. Three to four days were more required for a complete ripening of rice, as compared with the above dates. d. There was an overlap of about 12 to 42 days between the first and second cropping when early-maturing varieties requiring an accumulated mean air temperature of $1, 550^{\circ}C$, from transplanting to heading, were grown. Therefore, some varieties which could head with an accumulated daily mean air temperature of 1, 000 to $1, 200^{\circ}C$, should be either developed or some new cultural technology be established in order to have a successful double cropping in rice.
Several experiments were conducted to investigate the achene viability and growth characteristics of Eclipta prostrata (L.) L. No dormancy and no after-ripening requirement were found for E. prostrata achenes. When achenes were stored at room temperature, germination did not decrease with up to 5 months storage. Large differences in loss of viability of E. prostrata achenes occurred when different dehydration methods were used. Immediate dehydration resulted in high viability, but slow dehydration resulted in severe loss of viability. Achene viability at shallow burial depths (5 and 10 cm deep) was lower under upland soil conditions than under lowland soil conditions. Seedling growth was greatly reduced when flooding to a depth of 10 cm occurred at or before the 4-leaf stage. Flooding after the 4-leaf stage stimulated stem elongation. Branching started from the second week and usually terminated at the tenth week. Leaf size was determined by the branch which are related to the assimilate supply. Flowering of E. prostrata started during the fifth week after emergence, and mature achenes were produced from the sixth week. Ten to 14 days were needed for the achenes to mature. About 14,000 achenes were produced on each plant. Achene production per week increased from the sixth week to the tenth week and thereafter it declined. The average number of achenes per inflorescence decreased with delay in flowering.
An experiment was conducted to obtain the basic information about competitive ability of rice against weeds as affected by culm length at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station, Office of Rural Development in 1980. More weeds were harvested from the plot of short statured cultivar, Manseogbyeo compared to the plot of Cheongcheongbyeo that was approximately 10cm taller than Manseogbyeo regardless of planting density variables. Weeds also decreased as rice population increased from $30{\times}15cm$, $40{\times}(10{\times}10cm)$ and to $10{\times}10cm$, in order. The degree of weed suppression and floristic composition was varied depending upon plant spacing and weeding regime subjected at the previous year. The degree of weed suppression became increased with increasing rice population. The degree of weed suppression at the $10{\times}10cm$ plant spacing showed as high as hand weeding subjected in the previous year. However, in terms of floristic composition, Scirpus hotarui Roxb. became dominant when rice had cultivated at $10{\times}10cm$ plant spacing in the previous year while S. hotarui and Sagittaria pygmaea Miq. were both important in the hand weeding plot. The highest grain yield of rice showed at the $10{\times}10cm$ plant spacing while no significant difference was observed between $40{\times}(10{\times}10cm)$ and $30{\times}15cm$ plant spacings for both weeding regimes and both cultivars. However, response of grain yield to weeding regime was differed in two cultivars. For Manseobgyeo, significant grain yield decreased in no weeding plot regardless of plant spacing variables. But in case of Cheongcheongbyeo, grain yield reduction was only recognized at the $30{\times}15cm$ plant spacing. Based on these result it could be concluded that Cheongcheongbyeo (10cm taller in height) seemed to be more competitive against weeds than Manseogbyeo.
An experiment was conducted at the greenhouse of the International Rice Research Institute in 1987 to find out the character of dry matter production, the potential seed production ability and the ecological and physiological strategies to adaptation. For these, two rice cultivars, IR64(lowland rice) and UPLRi-5(upland rice), and seven weed species were used ; Echinochloa glabrescens Munro ex Hook. f., E. cress-galls ssp. hispidula (Retz.) Honda, E. colons (L.) Link, Monochoria vaginalis (Burin. f.), Ludwigia octovalvis Jacq.) Raven, Fimbristylis miliacea Vahl and Cyperus difformis L. Adaptation strategies of weed species varied by species. However, they had efficient seed production strategy through different ways. In general, sedge weed species (F. miliacea and C. difformis) produced great amount of seeds at the expense of seed size through greater ratooning ability and low relative dry weight for flowering. For broadleaved weed species, greater number of descendants were obtained through high plasticity and low relative dry weight for flowering (M. vaginalis) or greater growth ability through effective photosynthetic efficiency (L. octovalvis). Grass weed species, on the other hand, produced their seeds through effective growth (net assimilation rate and relative growth rate), high ratooning ability (except E. crus-galls ssp. hispidula) or low relative dry weight to maximum dry weight for flowering (E. glabrescens). The harvest indices of the weed species were considerably lower than those of rice. Fimbristylis miliacea had the greatest ratooning ability followed by C. difformis, E. colons and E. glabrescens. The greatest seed productivity was recorded by C. difformis (279, 000) and L. octovalvis (268,000) while rice produced the least number of seeds (1300-6100). Log seed weight had a negative linear relationship with log seed number (y=6.30-1.48X, $R=-0.965^{**}$). For all species plant plasticity response was not directly correlated with mortality response.
The biological indices based on the community structure with species richness and/or abundance are commonly used to assess aquatic ecosystem health. Meanwhile, recently functional traits-based approach is considered in ecosystem health assessment to reflect ecosystem functioning. In this study, we developed a database of biological traits for 136 taxa consisting of major stream insects (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera, Coleoptera, and Odonata) collected at Korean streams on the nationwide scale. In addition, we obtained environmental variables in five categories (geography, climate, land use, hydrology and physicochemistry) measured at each sampling site. We evaluated the relationships between community indices based on taxonomic diversity and functional diversity estimated from biological traits. We classified sampling sites based on similarities of their environmental variables and evaluated relations between clusters of sampling sites and diversity indices and biological traits. Our results showed that functional diversity was highly correlated with Shannon diversity index and species richness. The six clusters of sampling sites defined by a hierarchical cluster analysis reflected differences of their environmental variables. Samples in cluster 1 were mostly from high altitude areas, whereas samples in cluster 6 were from lowland areas. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) displayed similar patterns with cluster analysis and presented variation of taxonomic diversity and functional diversity. Based on NMDS and community-weighted mean trait value matrix, species in clusters 1-3 displayed the resistance strategy in the life history strategy to the environmental variables whereas species in clusters 4-6 presented the resilience strategy. These results suggest that functional diversity can complement the biological monitoring assessment based on taxonomic diversity and can be used as biological monitoring assessment tool reflecting changes of ecosystem functioning responding to environmental changes.
An experiment was carried out at the International Rice Research Institute in 1987 to understand the seed dormancy and germination habit of rice and several weed species. The germinability of the weed seeds just after harvest was variable depending on the species and ranged from 0 to 72%. Two rice cultivars, IR64(lowland type) and UPLRi-5(upland type) had higher than 95% in germination ability throughout the experimental period due to the fact that the rice seeds came from the harvest of the previous season and dormancy had already been overcome. The length of the storage period needed to overcome dormancy at room temperature($25{\pm}2^{\circ}C$) was about 50 days for Echinochloa glabrescens Munro ex Hook, f., more than 60 days for E. crus-galli ssp. hispidula (Retz.) Honda and 20 days for Ludwigia octovalvis(Jacq.) Raven. Seeds of E. colona(L.) Link, Monochoria vaginalis(Burm. f.) Presl, Fimbristylis miliacea(L.) Vahl and Cyperus difformis L. appeared to have no dormancy. Among the nine species M. vaginalis had the lowest germination of less than 1% throughout the experimental period. However, its seed germinated easily when planted in soil. The low germinability of E. glabrescens, E. crus-galli ssp. hispidula and L. octovalvis just after harvest could be overcome through pretreatment of seeds either by soaking in nitric acid(0.1N) for 1 day or removal of the hull in the grass species, the nitric acid treatment being superior. The results imply that germination habit of weed species varied depending on the species through their differential dormancy period or differential germination strategy.
An experiment was carried out at the International Rice Research Institute in 1987 to understand the seed germination and seedling development of rice and Echinochloa species. The percentage germination of rice cultivars(IR64 for lowland-type and UPLRi-5 for upland-type) was extremely high(>90%) regardless of temperature while that of Echinochloa species ranged from 10 to 80% depending on the species. Among these, E. crus-galli ssp. kispidula had the lowest germination with less than 20% at the high temperatures ($30^{\circ}C$, $35^{\circ}C$) and about 45% at the low temperature ($25^{\circ}C$). Original seed weight gradually decreased with time white root and shoot weight increased for both rice and Echinochloa species. However, increase in root and shoot weight did not compensate for the loss of stored carbohydrate during the experimental period. The root of E. glabrescens grew from the seed on the opposite side of the shoot while for rice it grew from the same side of the seed as the shoot. Echinochloa glabrescens had a leaf blade-like expanded first leaf that contained chlorophyll while rice had an incomplete first leaf that had no leaf blade and no chlorophyll. Due to this E. glabrescens could grow independently 2 to 3 days earlier than rice.
Red rice (local name "Sore") as a weed has been a serious threat to rice production in direct-seeded rice culture in Ganghwagun, Gyeonggi province. In the Ganghwagun 508 ha out of 1,420 ha in the Samsanmyeon area is infested with red rice. The average lowland rice yield is about 4,300 kg/ha in the Ganghwagun, but the average upland rice yield is about 2,000 kg/ha in infested area. This study was carried out in order to clarify the ecological characteristics of red rice and factors affecting the competitive ability of five red rice varieties, collected from Samsanmyeon in 1981, with rice cultivar. Five varieties-Monggeunsare, Salsare, Ginkaragsare, Galsaegsalsare, Galsaegkaragsare-showed the same morphological characteristics of cultivated Japonica type, Chuncheongbyeo, but red rice tillers more profusely, is taller and lodges more easily than Chucheongbyeo. It shatters easily about 10-15 days after heading date, and at this time the hull is discolored in yellow or dark brown. There are many types of red rice with short or long owns on the spikelet, occasionally with or without own on the spikelet in the same hill, and the grains are short or long. In red reice leaf blast occurs more severely than in cultivated Indica/Japonica type, Teabaegbyeo, particulary serious in Monggeunsare. When red rice invaded in direct-seeded rice, number of panicles of rice became reduced more than other yield components.
