  • 석유에너지의 고갈과 지구온난화 등의 환경적 문제는 대기오염물질 배출규제 강화와 함께 고효율 및 친환경에 적합한 새로운 선박용 동력장치의 필요성을 제기하고 있다. 최근 이와 같은 문제들을 근본적으로 해결하기 위한 지속가능한 방법으로서 연료전지를 선박의 동력발생장치로 도입하고자 하는 검토가 진행되고 있다. 본 논문은 대형 선박용으로 적합한 고체산화물형 연료전지/가스터빈 하이브리드시스템의 특성을 분석한 것으로 공기극 입구온도를 일정으로 제어하는 경우에 대한 시스템의 성능 및 안전성 등에 관한 문제를 다루고 있다.

박막 테이프캐스팅과 동시소성에 의한 연료극 지지형 SOFC 단전지 제조 (Fabrication of Anode-Supported SOFC Single Cells via Tape-Casting of Thin Tapes and Co-Firing)

  • An anode-supported SOFC single cell having $5{\mu}m$ thin electrolyte was fabricated cost-effectively by tape casting, laminating, and co-filing of anode (NiO-YSZ), cathode (LSM-YSZ), and electrolyte (YSZ) components. The optimal slurry compositions of the green tapes for SOFC components were determined by an analysis of the mean diameter, the slurry viscosity, the tensile strength/strain of the green tapes, and their green microstructures. The single cells with a dense electrolyte and porous electrodes could be co-fired successfully at $1325\sim1350^{\circ}C$ by controlling the contents of pore former and the ratio of coarse YSZ and fine YSZ in the anode and the cathode. The single cell co-fired at $1350^{\circ}C$ showed $100.2mWcm^{-2}$ of maximum power density at $800^{\circ}C$ but it was impossible to apply it to operate at low temperature because of low performance and high ASR, which were attributed to formation of the secondary phases in the cathode and the interface between the electrolyte and the cathode.

Development of Cobalt-free $La_xSr_{4-x}Fe_6O_{13}$ ($0{\leq}x{\leq}2$) Intergrowth Cathode Material for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

  • Cobalt-free $La_xSr_{4-x}Fe_6O_{13}$ ($0{\leq}x{\leq}2$) oxide have been synthesized and investigated as a potential cathode material for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). $Sr_4Fe_6O_{13}$ consists of alternating perovskite layers ($Sr_4Fe_2O_8$) containing iron cations in octahedral oxygen coordination and $Fe_4O_5$ layers where iron cations have 5-fold coordination of two types-square pyramids and trigonal bipyramids. Our preliminary electrochemical testes of pristine $Sr_4Fe_6O_{13}$ show a rather high area specific resistance ($0.47{\Omega}cm^2$ at $700^{\circ}C$) for ~20 ${\mu}m$ thick layers with CGO electrolyte. The electrochemical performances are improved by La addition up to x=1 ($La_1Sr_3Fe_6O_{13}$, $0.06{\Omega}cm^2$ at $700^{\circ}C$). In addition, thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) values of $La_1Sr_3Fe_6O_{13}$ specimen demonstrated $15.1{\times}10^{-6}\;^{\circ}C^{-1}$ in the range of 25-900$^{\circ}C$, which provides good thermal expansion compatibility with the CGO electrolyte. An electrolyte supported (300-${\mu}m$-thick) single-cell configuration of $La_1Sr_3Fe_6O_{13}$/CGO/Ni-CGO delivered a maximum power density of 584 $mWcm^{-2}$ at $700^{\circ}C$. In addition, an anode supported single cell by YSZ electrolyte (10-${\mu}m$-thick) with a porous CGO interlayer between the cathode and the electrolyte to avoid undesired interfacial reactions exhibited 1,517 $mWcm^{-2}$ at $800^{\circ}C$. The unique composition of $La_1Sr_3Fe_6O_{13}$ with low thermal expansion coefficient and higher electrochemical properties could be a good cathode candidate for intermediate temperature SOFCs with CGO and YSZ electrolyte.

  • Solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) attracts much attention because of its high energy efficiency among many water-electrolysis technologies. SOEC operates at temperatures above 700℃, so that the water required for water-electrolysis must be supplied in the form of steam. When the steam to be supplied to the SOEC is generated by the SOEC system itself, an enormous amount of latent heat is required to vaporize the water, so additional energy must be supplied to the SOEC system. On the other hand, if the steam can be supplied from the outside, a small amount of energy is required to raise the temperature of the low temperature steam, so that the SOEC system can be operated without additional energy supply from outside, which enables efficient water-electrolysis. In this study, we figure out the size of heat exchanger for various steam temperature and effectiveness of heat exchanger, and propose the energy efficiency of the system.

저온형 SOFC용 GDC 전해질 두께에 따른 Open Circuit Voltage 향상 (Improvement of Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) depending on Thickness of GDC Electrolyte of LT-SOFCs)

  • It has been considered to apply GDC ($Gd_{0.1}Ce_{0.9}O_{1-X}$) for low-temperature SOFC electrolytes because it has higher ionic conductivity than YSZ at low temperature. However, open circuit voltage with using GDC ($Gd_{0.1}Ce_{0.9}O_{1-X}$) electrolyte in SOFCs, becomes lower than using YSZ (8 mol% Yttria stabilized Zirconia) electrolyte because GDC has electronic conductivity. In this work, the effect of changing GDC electrolyte thickness on the open circuit voltage has been investigated. Ni-GDC anode-supported unit cells were fabricated as follows. Mixed NiO-GDC powders were pressed and pre-sintered at $1200^{\circ}C$. And then, GDC electrolyte material was dip-coated on the anode and sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$. Finally the LSCF-GDC cathode material was screen-printed on the electrolyte and sintered at $1000^{\circ}C$. Electrolyte thickness was controlled by the number of dip-coating times. Open circuit voltage was measured depending on electrolyte thickness at $650^{\circ}C$ and found that the thicker GDC electrolyte was, the better OCV was.

Fabrication of Crystalline $ZrO_2$ Nanotubes by ALD

  • Numerous possible applications for $ZrO_2$ nanotubes exist such as for catalyst support structures, for sensing or for applications as a solid state electrolyte. Especially, because of a large specific surface area, high efficiency for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) application at low temperature can be expected for nanotublar structures in even small size. A zirconium precursor, Tetrakis (ethylmethylamino) zirconium, TEMAZr and $H_2O$ oxidant were used to deposit$ZrO_2$ thin films on an anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) templates having sub-100nm cylindrical pores by atomic layer deposition (ALD) in the temperature range of 150~250$^{\circ}C$. The crystalline structures of as-prepared and post-annealed $ZrO_2$ nanotubes were characterized by x-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The as-prepared samples at $150^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$ were showed amorphous, whereas a mixed phase of tetragonal, monoclinic and amorphous polymorph was observed at $250^{\circ}C$. In the bulk, zirconia remains monoclinic phase up to $1,175^{\circ}C$, however, $ZrO_2$ nanotubes were showed tetragonal phase upon post thermal treatments merely at $400^{\circ}C$. This trend may be indicative of high-curvature surfaces of nanotubes and thereby the presence of intrinsic compressive strain. The amount of amorphous structures in the mixed phase as well as as-grown $ZrO_2$ nanotubes were also gradually decreased by subsequent heat treatment.

  • The metal-supported solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) was studied. Hydrocarbon fueled operation is necessary to make SOFC system. Different operating characteristics for metal-supported SOFC are used than for conventional ones as hydrocarbon fueled operation. Metal-supported SOFC was successfully fabricated by a high temperature sinter-joining method and the cathode was in-situ sintered. Synthetic gas, which is compounded as the diesel reformate gas composition and low hydrocarbons was completely removed by the diesel reformer. Metal-supported SOFC with synthetic gas was operated and evaluated and its characteristics analyzed. Button cell and $5{\times}5cm^2$ single stack were mainly operated and analyzed. Long-term operation using diesel reformate shows degradation, and degradation analysis was completed in the view of metal oxidation. Solution to increase stability of long-term operation was tried in the way of materials and operating conditions. Finally, $5{\times}5cm^2$ metal-supported single stack using synthetic gas was operated for 1000 hours under the modified condition.

Cathode Materials LaNi1−xCuxO3 for Low Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

  • New cathode materials $LaNi_{1-x}{Cu_x}{O_3}$ (typically $LaNi_{0.8}Cu_{0.2}O_3$) were synthesized using a co-precipitation method. The structure and morphology of the powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The composite material [$Ce_{0.8}Sm_{0.2}O_{2-\ddot{a}}$(SDC) and carbonate (${Na_2}{CO_3},{Li_2}{CO_3}$)], NiO and $LaNi_{1-x}{Cu_x}{O_3}$ were used as the electrolyte, anode and cathode, respectively. The electrochemical performance of La-Ni-Cu-O perovskite oxide at low temperatures ($400{\sim}550^{\circ}C$) was studied. The results showed that $LaNi_{0.8}Cu_{0.2}O_3$ precursor powder prepared through a co-precipitation method and calcined at $860^{\circ}C$ for 2 h formed uniform grains with diameters in the range of $400{\sim}500\;nm$. The maximum power density and the short circuit current density of the single cell unit at $550^{\circ}C$ were found to be $390\;mW/cm^2$ and $968\;mA/cm^2$, respectively.

고체산화물 연료전지 연료극 및 전해질 미세구조 최적화 (Optimization of anode and electrolyte microstructure for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells)

  • 고체산화물 연료전지의 성능과 안정성은 전극의 기공률, 기공 분포와 전해질의 치밀도, 두께에 따라 결정 된다. 연료극의 기공률과 기공 분포는 활성면적와 연료 흐름에 영향을 주고, 전해질의 치밀한 미세구조와 두께는 단위전지의 Ohmic 저항에 영향을 준다. 하지만 이를 위해 값 비싼 공정 장비를 이용하거나 여러 단계의 제작 공정이 추가 될 경우 단위전지 제작비가 증가하므로 상업화를 목표로 하는 연구에는 적합하지 않다. 본 연구에서는 위와 같은 문제점들을 해결하기 위하여 상용 소재 기반의 NiO-YSZ 연료극을 선정 후 간단한 혼합 방법 및 일축가압 성형법과 담금코팅(dip coating) 공정을 사용하여 저비용 고효율의 세라믹 공정 기반의 고성능 단위전지를 제작하였다. 연료극의 기공률은 기공형성제로서 사용되는 카본 블랙(CB, carbon black)의 첨가량(10~20 wt%)과 최종 소결온도($1350{\sim}1450^{\circ}C$)를 변경하며 제어하였고, YSZ 전해질의 두께와 미세구조는 담금코팅 슬러리의 고상 분말량(YSZ, 1~5 vol%)을 제어하여 치밀한 박막의 전해질을 구현하고자 하였다. 그 결과 Ni-YSZ 연료극에서 최적의 값으로 잘 알려진 40%의 기공률은 카본 블랙을 15 wt% 첨가하고최종소결온도를 $1350^{\circ}C$로설정함으로써얻을수있었다. 담금코팅을통한 YSZ 두께는 $2{\sim}28{\mu}m$까지 제어가 가능하였고, 3 vol%의 고상분말량에서 치밀한 전해질 미세구조가 형성되었다. 최종적으로 40%의 기공률을 갖는 Ni-YSZ 연료극, $20{\mu}m$ 두께의 치밀한 YSZ전해질, LSM-YSZ 공기극으로 구성된 단위전지는 $800^{\circ}C$에서 $1.426Wcm^{-2}$의 우수한 성능을 얻을 수 있었다.

NiO/YSZ/Pt 전해셀의 고온 수증기 전해에 의한 수소제조 특성 (Hydrogen Production by the High Temperature Steam Electrolysis of NiO/YSZ/Pt Cell)

  • High temperature electrolysis is a promising technology to produce massively hydrogen using renewable and nuclear energy. Solid oxide fuel cell materials are candidates as the components of steam electrolysers. However, the polarization characteristics of the typical electrode materials during the electrolysis have not been intensively investigated. In this study, NiO electrode was deposited on YSZ electrolyte by spin coat process and firing at $1300^{\circ}C$. Pt electrode was applied on the other side of the electrolyte to compare the polarization characteristics with those by NiO during electrolysis. The $H_2$ evolution rate was also monitored by measuring the electromotive force of Lambda probe and calculated by thermodynamic consideration. At low current density, Pt showed lower cathodic polarization and thus higher current efficiency than Ni, but the oxidation of Ni into NiO caused the increase of anodic resistance with increasing current density. High overpotential induced high power consumption to produce hydrogen by electrolysis.
