The Combustion and Exhasut Emission Characteristics on the Low-temperature Combustion of Biodiesel Fuel in a DI Diesel Engine

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of low-temperature combustion (LTC) on the correlations of combustion characteristics and reduction of exhaust emissions in a small DI diesel engine with biodiesel fuel. In order to analyze the combustion, exhaust emission characteristics and distribution of nano size particles for biodiesel were investigated. In addition, to evaluate the effect of LTC on the combustion and emission characteristics, 30 and 50% of cooled-EGR rates were investigated. From these results, it revealed that the influence of LTC on the combustion characteristics showed that the ignition delay significantly increased and reduces peak heat release rate of premixed combustion by lowering reaction rate. With 50% EGR and advanced injection timing, soot and $NO_x$ emissions were simultaneously reduced.

  • Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) shows great potential for low $NO_x$ emission but is hampered by the problem of no direct method to control the combustion process. Therefore, HCCI combustion becomes unstable easily, especially at lower and higher engine load. This paper presents a method to achieve diesel-fueled HCCI combustion, which involves directly injecting diesel fuel into the cylinder before the piston arrives at top dead center in the exhaust stroke and adjusting the valve overlap duration to trap more high temperature residual gas in the cylinder. The combustion stability of diesel-fueled HCCI combustion and the effects of engine load, speed, and valve overlap on it are the main points of investigation. The results show that: diesel-fueled HCCI combustion has two-stage heat release rate (low temperature and high temperature heat release) and very low $NO_x$ emission, combustion stability of the HCCI engine is worse at lower load because of misfire and at higher load because of knock, the increase in engine speed aids combustion stability at lower load because the heat loss is reduced, and increasing negative valve overlap can increase in-cylinder temperature which aids combustion stability at lower load but harms it at higher load.

  • Robustness and controllability are the key factors in internal combustion engine commercialization. This study focuses on the combustion strategy to commercialize the low temperature diesel combustion technology. Various LTC combustion methods such as PPCI, MK and highly diluted mixing controlled LTC were conducted on 6.0L heavy duty diesel engine. To find the best feasible LTC strategy, emission level, fuel consumption and combustion safety during the combustion mode change were considered. Experiments were carried out under various engine operating conditions; engine speed & load, EGR level, injection timing. Finally, this study suggests realizable LTC combustion strategy; moderate EGR level and slight early injection are possible to considerably lower PM, NOx emission and expand LTC operating range up to 50% load without CO and HC emission.

  • An experimental study has been carried on high-preheated temperature air combustion. The flames with high-preheated temperature air combustion turned out to be both temporally and spatially much more stable and homogeneous than these with room-temperature combustion air. The global flame feature showed a range of flame colors (yellow, blue, blurish-green) according to the flame conditions. A low level of NOx along with low level of CO has been obtained under high-preheated air combustion conditions. The thermal and chemical behavior of high-preheated air combustion flames depends on the preheated temperature and the oxygen concentration of air.

  • This study researched on the effect of HP/LP-EGR system to improve fuel consumption of Low Temperature Combustion Engine. Firstly, low temperature combustion engine with HP/LP-EGR system was established using 6.0L wastegate turbocharger HDDI engine. And suppliable EGR rate of the engine was proven to be enough to realize stable low temperature combustion. Then, optimum operating strategy was founded to develop fuel consumption of the engine. Control parameters were HP/LP-EGR valve and IPCV(Intake Pressure Control Valve) duty. Experiments method was that characteristics of the engine were measured and analyzed according to HP/LP-EGR strategies while EGR rate was fixed. Operating range for the strategy were divided into three parts, low load for low temperature combustion, high load for conventional diesel combustion, and transient condition. Finally, with the above strategy of this study, BSFC of the engine was improved about 2% compared to the base engine, and emission level, NOx and PM, met Tier4Final emission regulation.

저온 디젤 연소에서 T90 온도가 배기가스에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of T90 Temperature on Exhaust Emissions in Low-temperature Diesel Combustion)

  • This study is to investigate the effect of the distillation temperature in ultra low sulfur diesel fuel on exhaust emissions in the low-temperature diesel combustion with 1.9L common rail direct injection diesel engine. Low temperature diesel combustion was achieved by adopting an external high EGR rate with a strategic injection control. The engine was operated at 1500 rpm 2.6 bar BMEP. The 90% distillation recovery temperature (T90) was $270^{\circ}C$ and $340^{\circ}C$ for the respective cetane number (CN) 30 and 55. It was found that there exists no distinctive discrepancy on exhaust emissions with regards to the different T90s. The high CN (CN55) fuels follow the similar trend of exhaust emissions as observed in CN30 fuels' except that high T90 fuel (CN55-T340) produced higher PM compared to low T90 fuel (CN55-T270). This may come from that high T90 plays an active role in aggravating the degree of fuel-air mixture preparedness before ignition.

  • The ignition delay time is an important factor to understand the combustion characteristics of internal combustion engine. In this study, ignition delay times of cool and thermal flame were observed separately in homogeneous charge compression ignition(HCCI) engine. This study presents numerical investigation of ignition delay time of n-heptane and alcohol(ethanol and n-butanol) binary fuel. The $O_2$ concentration in the mixture was set 9-10% to simulate high exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) rate condition. The numerical study on the ignition delay time was performed using CHEMKIN codes with various blending ratios and EGR rates. The results revealed that the ignition delay time increased with increasing the alcohol fraction in the mixture due to a decrease of oxidation of n-heptane at the low temperature. From the numerical analysis, ethanol needed more radical and higher temperature than n-butanol for oxidation. In addition, thermal ignition delay time is sharply increasing with decreasing $O_2$ fraction, but cool flame ignition delay time changes negligibly for both binary fuels. Also, in high temperature regime, the ignition delay time showed similar tendency with both blends regardless of blending ratio and EGR rate.

함산소계 및 파라핀계 혼합 경유 및 저질유 액적의 연소특성에 관한 연구 (Study on Combustion Characteristics of Diesel Fuel and Low Quality Oil Droplet with Additive Oxygenate and Paraffin)

  • The single droplet combustion characteristics of diesel fuel and low quality oil with additive oxygenate and paraffin under high ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure were investigated in the study. The results of the study may are concluded as follows: In the combustion of diesel fuel and low quality oil droplet with additive of oxygenate and paraffin. the dimensionless droplet size of $(D/Do)^2$ was linearly decreased with time. A fuel droplet with low boiling temperature additives and in high boiling temperature base fuel evaporates and burns faster than usual base fuel. Especially. these trends were remarkably obtained by decreasing boiling point and increasing blending contents of additives in case of oxygenated agents rather than n-paraffin agents. This rapid burning may result from so-called 'micro-explosion' and its burning intensity varies with the types of additives. The results above may suggest that rapid evaporation of oxygenate additive in the middle stage of combustion can contribute much to combustion improvement of blended fuels.

  • 1.7L 커먼레일 직접분사 디젤엔진에 대하여 바이오 디젤 연료가 conventional 연소(PM-NOx 트레이드오프 존재)와 저온 연소(low temperature combustion, LTC)에서 배기가스 배출에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. LTC 연소는 conventional 연소 대비 다량의 EGR 과 연료분사 조건 최적화를 통하여 이루어졌다. 실험에 사용한 두 가지 연료는 초저유황 디젤연료(ultra low sulfur diesel fuel, ULSD), ULSD 에 대두유를 20%(vol. base)혼합한 바이오 디젤 연료(B20)이다. 사용된 연료에 관계없이 LTC 연소를 통하여 conventional 연소 대비 PM 및 NOx 의 동시 저감이 가능하였다. 동일한 엔진작동 조건에 대하여 conventional 연소의 경우 B20 는 ULSD 보다 PM은 적게 배출되나, NOx 는 많이 배출되었다. LTC 연소의 경우 B20 는 ULSD 보다 PM 및 NOx 생성이 많았다.

저온디젤연소에서 저세탄가 연료의 방향족 및 T90 온도가 배기가스에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Aromatics and T90 Temperature of Low Cetane Number Fuels on Exhaust Emissions in Low-Temperature Diesel Combustion)

  • 1.9L 커먼레일 직접분사 디젤 엔진을 이용하여 1500rpm 2.6bar BMEP 에서 다량의 EGR (약 41%)과 연료분사 제어를 통한 저온디젤연소 영역에서 연료의 특성이 연소와 배기가스에 미치는 영향을 분석하 였다. 사용한 연료는 세탄가 30 에 대하여 방향족 성분 (20%: A20, 45%: A45)과 T90 온도($270^{\circ}C$: T270, $340^{\circ}C$: T340)의 조합으로 네 개이다. 주어진 엔진 운전 영역에서 실험계획법을 이용하여 방향족 성분 및 T90 온도에 따른 연소 및 배기가스에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 착화지연 기간은 T90 온도가 지배적인 인자로 T90 온도 증가에 따라 착화지연 기간도 증가하였다. 저세탄가에 의한 착화지연 기간의 증가로 네 가지 연료 모두 PM 배출은 거의 없었다. NOx 배출은 방향족 성분이 지배적인 인자로 방향족 성분증가에 따라 NOx 배출이 증가하였다.
