  • Using hi plasma and Fe-Phthalocyanine, carbon nanofibers have been synthesized a low temperature. The carbon nanofibers had about In nm diameter and up to $10{\mu}m$ length. These were grown in random orientation. There are two shapes in the CNFs, screw and straight line shapes. Furthermore, we found the selective growth of nanofibers on the scratched substrates.

  • Wool and silk fabrics dyed with C.l. Acid Black 155 were subjected to sputter etching and exposed to a low temperature argon plasma. Color depth of shade of the fabrics increased considerably, but sputter etching was more effectively than argon low temperature plasma treatment. And measured for any significant chemical modification by ESCA (XPS). Sputter etching and argon low temperature plasma treatments incorporated oxygen atoms into the surface.

  • The high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels have low carbon contents (0.05~0.25% C) in order to produce adequate formability and weldability, and they have manganese contents up to 1.7%. Small quantities of silicon, chromium, nickel, copper, aluminum, molybdenum are used in various combinations. The results contained in this paper can provide the valuable information on the development of $-40^{\circ}C$ low temperature HSLA. Furthermore, the present experimental data will provide important database for casting steel materials of the offshore structure.

  • In order to develop effective manufacturing method and to improve quality of low-salt fermented squid(10% of table salt), we investigated the effects of temperature, salinity and pH on the growth of Staphylococcus xylosus, Micrococcus varians, Pseudomonas diminuta and Pseudomonas D2 isolated from of low-salt fermented squid and the growth characteristics of these bacteria during fermentation were elucidated. All bacteria showed good growth during the process of low-salt fermented squid(pH 6~7 ; concentration of NaCl, 7~10% ; temperature, 7~1$0^{\circ}C$) and their cell numbers increased as fermentation proceeded under the same fermentation condition.

  • Potassium is well-known to improve turfgrass tolerance to environmental stresses such as low temperature and drought stress. Low mowing height reduces leaf area of turfgrass that is main place for photosynthesis and carbohydrate production. Closely-mowed turf would suffer from summer decline by low level of carbohydrate resulted from low photosynthesis of reduced leaf area. The objective of the study is to investigate K rate and mowing height for Kentucky bluegrass. The K rate treatments were 5, 10, and $20g\;K_2O\;m^{-2}$ for the low, medium and high K rates, respectively. The bi-weekly mowing treatment was made for treatments. Mowing was implemented at 40 and 100 mm using a rotary mower. Regardless K rates, the high mowing height would be required when the air temperature is higher than $28.5^{\circ}C$ and high turfgrass quality of Kentucky bluegrass is needed. When the air temperature is optimal for cool-season grass, the high mowing height and the low K rate is needed for the root length of Kentucky bluegrass.

  • This study investigated the changes in the antioxidant activity, nitrite scavenging activity, and -glucan content of processed raw materials (Pleurotus eryngii, Pleurotus ostreatus, Lentinula edodes, and Flammulina velutipes) brought about by storage at room temperature (20-25℃) and low temperature (4℃). The results indicated that DPPH free radical scavenging activity was the lowest in air-dried and roasted samples that were stored at room temperature, k with the exception of the air-dried samples of P. eryngii and L. edodes. For total polyphenol contents, all roasted samples of the edible mushrooms stored at room and low temperature decreased compared with the samples pre-storage, except for the air-dried samples of P. eryngii, P. ostreatus, and L. edodes. Furthermore, the ferric reducing antioxidant power and reducing power of the air-dried and roasted samples stored at room temperature and low temperature tended to increase compared to that before storage. Moreover, the -glucan content in the air-dried and roasted samples stored at room temperature was significantly lower compared to that before storage, as well as to that in the samples stored at low temperature (p<0.05). The results of this study may help predict the degree to which biological activities in processed edible mushrooms change when stored at room temperature and/or low temperature conditions.

  • Lithium-ion secondary batteries exhibit advantageous characteristics such as high voltage, high energy density, and long life, allowing them to be widely used in both military and daily life. However, the lithium-ion secondary battery does have its limitation; for example, the output power and capacity are readily decreased due to the increased internal impedance during discharging at a lower temperature (-32℃, military requirement). Also, during charging at a lower temperature, lithium dendrite growth is accelerated at the anode, thereby decreasing the battery capacity and life as well. This paper describes a study that involves increasing the internal temperature of lithium-ion secondary battery by energy circulation operation in a low-temperature environment. The energy circulation operation allows the lithium-ion secondary battery to alternately charge and discharge, while the internal resistance of lithium-ion battery acts as a heating element to raise its own temperature. Therefore, the energy circulation operation method and device were newly designed based on the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of the lithium-ion secondary battery to mediate the battery performance at a lower temperature. Through the energy circulation operation of lithium ion secondary battery, as a result of the heat generated from internal resistance in an extremely low-temperature environment, the temperature of the lithium-ion secondary battery increased by more than 20℃ within 10 minutes and showed a 75% discharging capacity compared with that at room temperature.

  • ORC(organic Rankine cycle) has potential of reducing consumption of fossil fuels and has many favorable characteristics to exploit low-temperature heat sources. This work analyzes performance of ORC with superheating using low-temperature energy sources in the form of sensible energy. Maximum mass flow rate of a working fluid relative to that of a source fluid is considerd to extract maximum power from the sources. Working fluids of R134a, $iC_4H_{10}$ and $C_6C_6$, and source temperatures of $120^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$ are considered in this work. Results show that for a fixed source temperature thermal efficiency increases with evaporating temperaure, however net work per unit mass of source fluid has a maximum with respect to the evaporating temperature in the range of low source temperature. Results also show that the maximum power extraction is possible with R134a for the source temperature of $120^{\circ}C$, with $iC_4H_{10}$ for $200^{\circ}C$, and with $C_6C_6$ for $300^{\circ}C$.

  • As a preliminary study of optimum composite properties under cryogenic temperature, the comparison of interfacial properties of carbon or glass fibers reinforced epoxy composites was evaluated at ambient and intermediate low temperature, i.e., 25 and $-10^{\circ}C$ by using micromechanical techniques. Under tensile and compressive loading conditions, their mechanical modulus at low temperature was higher than that atambient temperature. Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) at ambient and low temperatures was compared to each other, depending on epoxy matrix toughness and apparent modulus at the interface. The IFSS was much higher at low temperature than that at room temperature because of the increased epoxy matrix modulus. Statistical distributions of tensile strengths of glass and carbon fibers were evaluated for different temperature ranges, which is dependent upon fiber's inherent flaws and rigidity.

  • Silicone-coated fabric were treated by oxygen low temperature plasma to improve the adhesion. The surface of silicone-coated fabric was modified with gaseous plasma of several discharge power in the presence of oxygen gas at 1Torr pressure. Oxygen plasma treatment introduces oxygen-containing functional groups and micro-pittings on the silicone-coated fabric surface. The treated fabrics with oxygen low temperature plasma were measured by contact angle analyzer and XPS(X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy), and interfacial adhesion was measured by T-peel test. The surface of fabric was investigated by SEM photographs. The chemical and physical modification of the surface wettabillity by plasma treatment can increase the adhesion.
