The friction and wear behaviors of ceramics against steels with lubricants were investigated and compared with those observed in air. Lubrications wbre done by a water and a commercial engine oil as received. The investigated ceramics were $Al_{2}O_{3}$, SiC, and $Si_{3}N_{4}$. Steels with 0.2 wt.% C were heat treated to obtain tempered structure. A cylinder-on-plate tribometer with rotated sliding motion was used to carry out the experiments. In the experiments reported here, the ranges of different testing speeds and loads were used. It was found that the friction and wear characteristics of tested pairs were significantly influenced by environments. In water and oil environments the wear of ceramics was reduced from 10$^{-6}$ g/s down to 10$^{-8}$ g/s in dry sliding at the same values of the frictional power which are the products of the friction coefficient, the load and the sliding speed. SiC showed excellent wear resistant behavior in water sliding, which was the lowest among tested ceramics, but it was, very poor in oils. In case of $Si_{3}N_{4}$, the wear rates were very low under oil environment, but the highest in water. The wear rates of $Al_{2}O_{3}$ were very low in both lubricating conditions at low values of the frictional power, but high at high values of the frictional power.

Cryogenic machining uses liquid nitrogen (LN2) as a coolant. This machining process can reduce the cutting temperature and increase tool life. Titanium alloys have been widely used in the aerospace and automobile industries because of their high strength-to-weight ratio. However, they are difficult to machine because of their poor thermal properties, which reduce tool life. In this study, we applied cryogenic machining to titanium alloys. Orthogonal cutting experiments were performed at a low cutting speed (1.2 - 2.1 m/min) in three cooling conditions: dry, cryogenic, and cryogenic plus heat. Cutting force and friction coefficients were observed to evaluate the machining characteristics for each cooling condition. For the cryogenic condition, cutting force and friction coefficients increased, but decreased for the cryogenic plus heat condition.

In this study, examined the cutting characteristics of alumuminum alloy AC8A-T6 that is used to present car piston materials. And in been holding materials machining empirically escape as result that experiment comparison changing the cutting speed and feed on various condition to choose efficient machining condition. The following results can be summarized from this research. 1. As the cutting speed decreased, principal cutting force and thrust cutting force is increased, and reason that cutting force interacts greatly in the low cutting speed is thought by result by BUE's stabilization. 2. The feed speed and cutting speed increase, friction factor is decrescent and the cause appeared the thrust cutting force is fallen than cutting force relatively because chip flow according to increase of the feed rate is constraint. 3. Though specific cutting resistance grows cutting area and the feed rate are few, the cause was expose that shear angle decreases by rake face of tool gets into negative angle remarkably as wear of a cutting tool or defect part of workpiece is cut. 4. Cutting speed do greatly depth of cut is slow, surface roughness examined closely through an experiment that becomes bad, and know that it can get good surface that process cutting speed because do feed rate by 0.1mm/rev low more than 250m/min to get good surface roughness can.
Recently the demand for a fast and precise actuator in semiconductor industries is growing larger. A SAW motor is now expected as a new friction-drive actuator to meet such demand. However, its friction and wear properties are almost unknown and its low stability and reliability still remain to be solved. In this research the tests of SAW motor were carried out and its durability was discussed. The effect of wear caused by friction on the driving force and driving speed were clarified.

High-speed electrical motor has been studied for several applications, i.e. for direct-drive systems of centrifugal compressors and turbo blowers. This paper deals with a design consideration of electromagnetic, mechanical and thermal limits of high-speed induction motor for turbo blower. Basic design concept of high-speed motor was proposed. As the motor is to be operated at high speed, the losses are quite different from conventional low-speed machines. Especially, the increases of rotor eddy current and friction losses could lead to an overheated motor. So, we suggested a special cooling system to reduce temperature rise. And, based upon this design concept, the prototype induction motor(37[kW], 45,000[rpm]) for high-speed turbo blower was designed and 2-D electromagnetic field analysis was implemented. Finally, criteria to evaluate the characteristics of high-speed induction motor have been proposed and tested.

Laser surface texturing (LST), a surface engineering modification, has been considered as one of the new processes used to improve tribological characteristics of materials by creating artificially patterned microstructure on the contact surface of mechanical components. In LST technology, the laser is optimized to obtain or manufacture the dimples with maximum precision. The micro-dimples reduce the coefficients of friction and also improve the wear resistance of materials. This study investigates the effect of dimple density is investigated. For this purpose, a ball-on-disc type tester is used with AISI 52100 bearing steel as the test material. Discs are textured with a 5% and 10% dimple density. Experimental work is performed with normal loads of 5 N, 10 N, and 15 N under a fixed speed of 150 rpm at room temperature. The effect of the textured surface is compared to that of the untextured one. Experimental results show that the textured surface yields lower friction coefficients compared to those of untextured surfaces. Specifically, the 10% dimple density textured surface shows better friction reduction behavior than the 5% dimple density textured sample, and has an 18% improvement in friction reduction compared with the untextured samples. Microscopic observation using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) shows that the major friction mechanisms of the AISI 52100 bearing steel are adhesion, plastic deformation, and ploughing.
This paper describes the evaluation of a force-reflecting interface with ultrasonic motors(USMs). The force-reflecting interface allows a human to feel object within virtual environment. To effectively display the mechanical impedance of the human hand we need a haptic device with specific characteristics, such as low inertia, almost zero friction and very high stiffness. USMs have attracted considerable attention as the actuator satisfied these conditions. USMs combine features such as high driving torque at low rotational speed, high holding torque and fast response therefore we studied two degree of freedom force-reflecting haptic system.

The viscosity drive method by the wheel which is widely used in the conventional railway systems needs a large friction force between the wheel and the guide-rail, which brings on a thrust force for a quick acceleration and a high-speed travelling. In addition, the viscosity drive method needs an increase of the vehicle weight for a large friction force. However, a maglev train is possible to be driven by the electro-magnet instead of the wheel, which produces a levitation and thrust force without any contact. In general, low-speed maglev train uses a linear induction motor(LIM) for propulsion that is operated under 300[km/h] due to the power-collecting and end-effect problems of LIM. In case of high-speed maglev train, a linear synchronous motor(LSM) is more suitable than LIM because of a high-efficiency and high-output properties. LSM has a driving principle as same as a conventional rotary synchronous motor(RSM), and the torque of RSM becomes the thrust force of LSM. A conventional LSM has relatively large air-gap compared with a conventional RSM. So, it must be achieved a design that is considered normal force by finite-asymmetric structure, end-effect on the entry and exit part, and support structure of a moving part. Therefore, in this research, authors accomplish a conceptualizing and basic design of a small-scaled LSM, and characteristics analysis using FEM.
A pump turbine is a technically matured option for energy production and storage systems. At the off-design operating range, the pump turbine succumbed to flow instabilities, which correlated with the pump turbine geometry. A low specific speed pump turbine was designed and modified according to the impeller blade angle. Reynolds-Average Navier-Stokes is carried out with a shear stress transport turbulence model to evaluate the detailed flow characteristics in the pump turbine. The impeller blade inlet angle (𝛽1) and outlet angle (𝛽2) are used to evaluate hydraulic loss in the pump turbine. When 𝛽1 changed from low to high value, the maximum efficiency is increased by 4.75% in turbine mode. The S-Curve inclination is reduced by 8% and 42% for changes in 𝛽1 and 𝛽2 from low to high values, respectively. At α = 21°, the shock loss coefficient (𝜁s) is reduced by 16% and 19% with increases of 𝛽1 and 𝛽2 from low to high values, respectively. When 𝛽1 and 𝛽2 values increased from low to high, the impeller friction coefficient (𝜁f) increased and decreased by 20% and 8%, respectively. Hence, the high 𝛽2 effectively reduced the loss coefficient and S-Curve inclination.

The characteristics and good corrosion resistance at room and elevated temperatures led to increasing application of Ti-alloys such as aircraft, jet engine, turbine wheels. In forging of Ti-alloy at high temperature, die chilling and die speed should be carefully controlled because the flow stress of Ti-alloy is sensitive to temperature, strain and strain-rate. In this study, the forging of turbine disk was numerically simulated by the finite element method for hot-die forging process and isothermal forging process, respectively. The effects of the temperature changes, the die speed and the friction factor were examined. Also, local variation of process parameters, such as temperature, strain and strain-rate were traced during the simulation. It was shown that the isothermal forging with low friction condition produced defect-free disk under low forging load. Consequently, the simulational information will help industrial workers develope the forging of Ti-alloys including 'preform design' and 'processing condition design'. It is also expected that the simulation method can be used in CAE of near net-shape forging.
