A direct injection diesel engine with large amount of exhaust gas recirculation was used to investigate low temperature diesel combustion. Pilot injection strategy was adopted in low temperature diesel combustion to reduce high carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions. Combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions of low temperature diesel combustion under different pilot injection timings, pilot injection quantities and injection pressures were analyzed. Retarding pilot injection timing, increasing pilot injection quantity and higher injection pressure advanced main combustion timing and increased peak heat release rate of main combustion. As a result of these strategies, carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions were reduced. Soot emission was slightly increased with retarded pilot injection timing while the effect of pilot injection on nitrogen oxides emission was negligible under low combustion temperature condition. Spatial distribution of fuel from the spray targeting visualization was also investigated to provide more insight into the reason for the reduction in carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions.

Low temperature combustion is one of the advanced combustion technology in an internal combustion engine to reduce soot and nitrogen oxides simultaneously. In present experiment three kinds of injector were used to investigate the influence of injection angle and number of nozzle holes on the low temperature combustion in a heavy duty diesel engine. Low temperature diesel combustion is realized from the exhaust gas recirculation rate of 60%. Indicated mean effective pressure of low temperature combustion corresponds to the 70% level of conventional diesel engine combustion. Reduction of hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide, which are produced in low temperature combustion because of the low combustion temperature and a deficit of oxygen, was achieved by using various injector configuration. The result of experiment with $100^{\circ}$ injection angle and 8 holes showed that reductions in hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide could be achieved 58% and 27% respectively maintaining the 7% increased indicated mean effective pressure in low temperature diesel combustion compared with conventional injector.

In this research, combustion and spray characteristics were investigated experimentally in a constant volume chamber by applying bio-diesel fuel to a common-rail system in which precise control is available for utilizing environmentally friendly properties of bio-diesel fuel. The experiment was conducted at fuel temperatures $20^{\circ}C$ and $-20^{\circ}C$ to investigate combustion characteristics of bio-diesel fuel provoking problems in fluidity specially in a low temperature. For the visualization, the experiment was carried out under various conditions of ambient pressure, injection pressure and fuel temperature. The test was made by three different types of diesel fuels, conventional diesel, BD20 and BD100. In summary, this research aims to investigate combustion characteristics in the application of bio-diesel fuels and compare the results with performance of conventional diesel fuel. This experimental data may provide fundamentals of spray and combustion of bio-diesel fuels at a low temperature and contribute to the development of bio-diesel engines in future.

Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) shows great potential for low $NO_x$ emission but is hampered by the problem of no direct method to control the combustion process. Therefore, HCCI combustion becomes unstable easily, especially at lower and higher engine load. This paper presents a method to achieve diesel-fueled HCCI combustion, which involves directly injecting diesel fuel into the cylinder before the piston arrives at top dead center in the exhaust stroke and adjusting the valve overlap duration to trap more high temperature residual gas in the cylinder. The combustion stability of diesel-fueled HCCI combustion and the effects of engine load, speed, and valve overlap on it are the main points of investigation. The results show that: diesel-fueled HCCI combustion has two-stage heat release rate (low temperature and high temperature heat release) and very low $NO_x$ emission, combustion stability of the HCCI engine is worse at lower load because of misfire and at higher load because of knock, the increase in engine speed aids combustion stability at lower load because the heat loss is reduced, and increasing negative valve overlap can increase in-cylinder temperature which aids combustion stability at lower load but harms it at higher load.

This study is to investigate the effect of the distillation temperature in ultra low sulfur diesel fuel on exhaust emissions in the low-temperature diesel combustion with 1.9L common rail direct injection diesel engine. Low temperature diesel combustion was achieved by adopting an external high EGR rate with a strategic injection control. The engine was operated at 1500 rpm 2.6 bar BMEP. The 90% distillation recovery temperature (T90) was $270^{\circ}C$ and $340^{\circ}C$ for the respective cetane number (CN) 30 and 55. It was found that there exists no distinctive discrepancy on exhaust emissions with regards to the different T90s. The high CN (CN55) fuels follow the similar trend of exhaust emissions as observed in CN30 fuels' except that high T90 fuel (CN55-T340) produced higher PM compared to low T90 fuel (CN55-T270). This may come from that high T90 plays an active role in aggravating the degree of fuel-air mixture preparedness before ignition.

Robustness and controllability are the key factors in internal combustion engine commercialization. This study focuses on the combustion strategy to commercialize the low temperature diesel combustion technology. Various LTC combustion methods such as PPCI, MK and highly diluted mixing controlled LTC were conducted on 6.0L heavy duty diesel engine. To find the best feasible LTC strategy, emission level, fuel consumption and combustion safety during the combustion mode change were considered. Experiments were carried out under various engine operating conditions; engine speed & load, EGR level, injection timing. Finally, this study suggests realizable LTC combustion strategy; moderate EGR level and slight early injection are possible to considerably lower PM, NOx emission and expand LTC operating range up to 50% load without CO and HC emission.

The ignition delay of diesel oil and fish oil blended with diesel oils was investigated at various pressure and temperature conditions in a constant volume combustion bomb. The evaporation and combustion duration of diesel oil and fish oil blended with diesel oils were respectively different in high and low temperature. The dependence of ignition delay on the temperature was different in high and low temperature ranges which were divided at the 773K. The dependence of ignition delay on the pressure was almost linear, regardless of the test fuels at the constant temperature(863K). The ignition delay became longer as the blending rate of fish oil increased at the constant temperature and pressure, but it was especially short with 20% fish oil blended with diesel oils.

LTC(Low Temperature Combustion) technology has been studied to see feasibility of the combustion technology applied to heavy-duty engines on the laboratory scale. This study succeeded to develop a demo engine including realized low temperature combustion under partial load conditions. To find the best feasible LTC strategy, various LTC combustion methods such as PPCI, MK and highly diluted mixing controlled LTC were conducted on 6.0L heavy duty diesel engine. Air management system was re-designed to make these combustion scheme stable and the re-designed air system helped expand LTC operating range. This study finally revealed plausible LTC concept to maximize benefit of the alternative combustion technology while overcoming handicaps of the LTC strategy.

The evaporation and combustion duration of diesel oil and fish oil blended with diesel oils were respectively different high and low temperature. The dependence of ignition delay on the temperature was different in high and low temperature ranges which were divided at the 773K. The ignition delay become longer than that of diesel oil as the blending rate of fish oil increases, and its difference were larger at different loads. The densityof smoke was lower as the blending rate of fish oil increases, and the rate offuel consumption showed no significant difference between diesel oil and fish oil blended with diesel oils.

The objective of this study is to investigate the effects of low-temperature combustion (LTC) on the correlations of combustion characteristics and reduction of exhaust emissions in a small DI diesel engine with biodiesel fuel. In order to analyze the combustion, exhaust emission characteristics and distribution of nano size particles for biodiesel were investigated. In addition, to evaluate the effect of LTC on the combustion and emission characteristics, 30 and 50% of cooled-EGR rates were investigated. From these results, it revealed that the influence of LTC on the combustion characteristics showed that the ignition delay significantly increased and reduces peak heat release rate of premixed combustion by lowering reaction rate. With 50% EGR and advanced injection timing, soot and $NO_x$ emissions were simultaneously reduced.
