  • As the second part of the author's study, off-design behavior of the design and performance parameters in the low-solidity cascade diffuser in a centrifugal compressor is investigated. The experimental flange-to-flange compressor map serves the validity of application of the present CFD work to the detailed investigation of the low-solidity cascade diffuser. Some meanline design and performance parameters as well as three-dimensional internal secondary flow fields are studied when the flow rate is changed from deep choke to stall.

  • The design of low-solidity vaned diffusers and the effect on the performance of a turbocharger compressor is discussed. The effect of vane number and turning angle was investigated while maintaining a basic design with a leading edge angle of $70^{\circ}$, leading and trailing edge radius ratios of 1.1 and 1.3. All results are compared with those obtained with the standard vaneless diffuser configuration and it was shown that all designs increased and shifted the pressure ratio to reduced flowrates. Despite the low-solidity configuration none of the vane designs provided a broad operating range, and the vane leading edge angle was not main factor that system went into the surge condition. The diffuser of higher trailing edge angle improved the flow range for the compressor to operate at lower flow region.

  • The present study has been conducted to design the high efficiency centrifugal compressor for a R134a turbo-chiller. The centrifugal compressor consists of an impeller with splitters, two vaneless diffusers, a low-solidity vaned diffuser and a volute. A cycle analysis program for a turbo-chiller was developed to obtain compressor design parameters and requirements. We have designed the high efficiency centrifugal compressor by applying the repeated design procedure including a meanline design, a 3D geometry generation and fluid dynamic loading calculations.

  • Numerical simulation on the two-stage centrifugal compressor with Low Solidity Vaned Diffuser LSVD) for HFC-134a Turbo-chiller was performed using a commercial code. The comparative study with experimental results from other compressor was also investigated to testify the simulation schemes. The numerical analysis was separately simulated for each stage of the compressor and the effect of impeller-diffuser flow interaction was considered. Setting angle of the diffuser vane changed in the range of 15 deg. and the effects on its variation were discussed in detail including the flow analysis in the passage of the compressor. The vane setting angle obtained from the preliminary design was slightly adjusted to the optimal value by the performance enhancement in terms of pressure recovery and flow characteristics.

  • Recently for the impressive gains of performance and efficiency over vaneless diffuser with apparently little or no loss in flow range, the use of LSVD(Low Solidity Vaned Diffuser) is well recommended. The experiments on the effect of the vane turning angle variation(positive, negative, zero) with other design parameters fixed on the performance and flow range were carried out. Diffuser with zero turning angle has the best characteristics in terms of performance and efficiency and The FFT results show the different frequency characteristics due to the vane turning angle in low flow range.

  • We developed a high-efficiency, wide-operating-range centrifugal blower stage to meet the demand for reduced total energy-consumption in sewage treatment plants. We improved the efficiency of the two-dimensional impeller using a shape optimization tool and one-dimensional performance prediction tool. A limit of the throat deceleration ratio was set to maintain the stall-margin of the impeller. The low solidity vaned diffuser and return channel were designed using a sensitivity analysis with orthogonal arrays and three-dimensional steady flow simulations. The low solidity diffuser was designed in order to improve the performance in the low-flow-rate region. The return channel was designed so that the total pressure loss in the return channel was minimized. Model tests of both the conventional and optimized blower stages were carried out, and the efficiency and operating range of both stages were compared. The optimized blower stage improved in stage efficiency by 3% and in operating range by 5% compared with the conventional blower stage.

  • A centrifugal compressor for geothermal heat pump system using R134a as working fluid has been developed. The centrifugal compressor consists of an impeller with splitters, two vaneless diffuser, a low solidity vaned diffuser and a volute. In this compressor, diffuser blade angles are controlled to satisfy both heating and cooling conditions. A aerodynamic design was done by applying the repeating design procedure including a meanline design, a 3D geometry generation and fluid dynamic calculation. In this paper, design and performance prediction results of the compressor are presented.
