It is important to secure green spaces to solve the urban heat island phenomenon, which is among problems resulted by high-density developments in metropolitan areas. However, it is hard to secure such green spaces in established urban areas so Green Rooftop development approaches have recently been highlighted and introduced as a solution to the situation. The present study conducts a simulation on residential areas in urbanized regions to quantitatively evaluate the effects of green rooftop developments through a comparison of changes in the air temperatures before and after relevant development projects. According to the evaluation results, when the green roof top development is conducted in the available areas, the temperature is reduced by 0.14 degree. The extension of green project to the entire building showed the reduction of the temperature by 0.29 degree. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the green rooftop development is a practically solution for reducing the air temperature of urbanized areas.
Investigations on simulated near-surface atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) in an open-jet facility are carried out by conducting experimental tests on small-scale models of low-rise buildings. The objectives of the current study are: (1) to determine the optimal location of test buildings from the exit of the open-jet facility, and (2) to investigate the scale effect on the aerodynamic pressure characteristics. Based on the results, the newly built open-jet facility is well capable of producing mean wind speed and turbulence profiles representing open-terrain conditions. The results show that the proximity of the test model to the open-jet governs the length of the separation bubble as well as the peak roof pressures. However, test models placed at a horizontal distance of 2.5H (H is height of the wind field) from the exit of the open-jet, with a width that is half the width of the wind field and a length of 1H, have consistent mean and peak pressure coefficients when compared with available results from wind tunnel testing. In addition, testing models with as large as 16% blockage ratio is feasible within the open-jet facility. This reveals the importance of open-jet facilities as a robust tool to alleviate the scale restrictions involved in physical investigations of flow pattern around civil engineering structures. The results and findings of this study are useful for putting forward recommendations and guidelines for testing protocols at open-jet facilities, eventually helping the progress of enhanced standard provisions on the design of low-rise buildings for wind.
High-rise buildings are very slender and flexible. Their low stiffness values make them vulnerable to horizontal loads, such as those associated with wind or earthquakes. For high-rise buildings, the threat to serviceability caused by wind-induced vibration is an important problem. To estimate the serviceability under wind action, the response acceleration of a building at the roof height is used. The response acceleration is estimated by the same wind speed at all wind directions. In general, the effect of wind direction is not considered. Therefore, the response accelerations obtained are conservative. If buildings have typical plans and strong winds blow from relatively constant wind directions, it is necessary to account for the wind direction to estimate the response accelerations. This paper presents three methods of evaluating the response accelerations while considering the effects of wind direction. These three serviceability evaluation methods were estimated by combining the wind directional frequency data obtained from a weather station with the results of a response analysis using wind tunnel tests. Finally, the decrease in the efficiencies of the response acceleration for each serviceability evaluation method was investigated by comparing the response acceleration for the three methods accounting for wind direction with the response acceleration in which wind direction was not considered.

Response of tall buildings to near-field ground motions with distinct low-frequency pulses can differ dramatically from, for example, the response to the 1940 El Centro ground motion. For the same peak ground acceleration (PGA) and duration of shaking, ground motions with a pulse-like characteristic can generate much higher base shear, inter-story drifts and roof displacement in a high-rise building as compared to ground motions without the characteristic pulse. Also, the ductility demand is much higher and the effectiveness of supplemental damping is lower for pulse-like ground motions. This paper presents a simple interpretation of the response characteristics for two recorded and one synthetic near-field pulse-like ground motions.

Focusing on the creation of a new han ok, especially a mid-rise hybrid-structured Han-ok, this study proposes a middle-rise (four-story) Han-ok on one and two lots located in Seoun-dong, the existing Han-ok intensive housing site in downtown Cheongju. 1) In terms of layout and function, according to the existing L-shaped Han-ok corresponding to the road and the direction, the parking lots and shops on the 1st floor, the business facility on the 2nd floor, the Han-ok on the 3rd and 4th floors are placed. There are yards, open roof yards, and semi-open Daecheong(大廳, main hall), which can be shared by residents. 2) In terms of structure and form, one or two floors (some 3 floors) are 5.4m square and 5.4×6.6m modules of the RC(Reinforced Concrete) group, and the upper floor reflects the 2.7m module, size and shape of the existing Han-ok. By extending the outer wall of the RC group in the lower floors (1st to 3rd floors) to the wooden exterior of the upper floors (2nd to 4th floors), it is attempted to avoid the awkward appearance of the RC group being exposed to wooden structures. And it is also attempted to reflect the wooden shape and design elements through the elevation elements such as horizontal windows, corner windows, picture frames, and vertical slits. 3) In environmental control and facilities, it is attempted to smooth the ventilation of the building by forming a vertical upward airflow from the dark space of the low floor to the positive of the upper floor. This doubles the effect through a vertical rise of cold air generated in a narrow alleyway, piloti parking lot, and the various voids. In addition to the Daecheong and Numaru(loft) of Han ok, the rooftop yard, the terrace, and the balcony, horizontal natural ventilation is generated through divided doors and transom windows.

This study numerically examined the maximum wind pressure distribution of a billboard on the roof of a middle-rise building. The deformation caused by the maximum wind pressure was examined. For the numerical analysis, the signboard was assumed to be installed on $(b)20m{\times}(d)10m{\times}(h)$ buildings. The maximum wind pressure was measured using four models with the standard model and different sizes of the signboard. The numerical analysis showed that the horizontal deformation predominantly occurs as the shape of the signboard becomes closer to a rectangle, and high wind pressure and deformation occur at the corners of both ends. As the height of the signboard increases, vertical deformation predominantly occurs, and static pressure forms on the backside. When the height is lower than the width of the signboard, the wind pressure is concentrated on the center of the roof. Therefore, the distribution of the maximum wind pressure is stable, and the effect of the wind pressure is relatively low as the height-to-width ratio approaches 1.
According to the new directives about the rational and efficient use of energy, thermal bridges in buildings have to be avoided, and the thermal insulation (TI) layer should run without interruptions all around the building - even under its foundations. The paper deals with the seismic response of multi-storeyed reinforced concrete (RC) frame building structures founded on an extruded polystyrene (XPS) layer placed beneath the foundation slab. The purpose of the paper is to elucidate the problem of buildings founded on a TI layer from the seismic resistance point of view, to assess the seismic behaviour of such buildings, and to search for the critical parameters which can affect the structural and XPS layer response. Nonlinear dynamic and static analyses were performed, and the seismic response of fixed-base (FB) and thermally insulated (TI) variants of nonlinear RC building models were compared. Soil-structure interaction was also taken into account for different types of soil. The results showed that the use of a TI layer beneath the foundation slab of a superstructure generally induces a higher peak response compared to that of a corresponding system without TI beneath the foundation slab. In the case of stiff structures located on firm soil, amplification of the response might be substantial and could result in exceedance of the superstructure's moment-rotation plastic hinge capacities or allowable lateral roof and interstorey drift displacements. In the case of heavier, slenderer, and higher buildings subjected to stronger seismic excitations, the overall response is governed by the rocking mode of oscillation, and as a consequence the compressive strength of the XPS could be insufficient. On the other hand, in the case of low-rise and light-weight buildings, the friction capacity between the layers of the applied TI foundation set might be exceeded so that sliding could occur.

The seismic response of RC space frame structures with isolated footing resting on a shallow soil stratum on rock is presented in this paper. Homogeneous soil stratum of different stiffness in the very soft to stiff range is considered. Soil, footing and super structure are considered to be the parts of an integral system. A finite element model of the integrated system is developed and subjected to scaled acceleration time histories recorded during two different real earthquakes. Dynamic analysis is performed using mode superposition method of transient analysis. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the effect of flexibility of soil in the dynamic behaviour of low-rise building frames. The time histories and Fourier spectra of roof displacement, base shear and structural response quantities of the space frame on compliant base are presented and compared with the fixed base condition. Results indicate that the incorporation of soil flexibility is required for the realistic estimate of structural seismic response especially for single storey structures resting on very soft soil.
In coastal residential communities, especially along the coastline, flooding is a frequent natural hazard that impacts the area. To reduce the adverse effects of flooding, it is recommended to elevate coastal buildings to a certain safe level. However, post storm damage assessment has revealed severe damages sustained by elevated buildings' components such as roofs, walls, and floors. By elevating a structure and creating air gap underneath the floor, the wind velocity increases and the aerodynamics change. This results in varying wind loading and pressure distribution that are different from their slab on grade counterparts. To fill the current knowledge gap, a large-scale aerodynamic wind testing was conducted at the Wall of Wind experimental facility to evaluate the wind pressure distribution over the surfaces of a low-rise gable roof single-story elevated house. The study considered three different stilt heights. This paper presents the observed changes in local and area averaged peak pressure coefficients for the building surfaces of the studied cases. The aerodynamics of the elevated structures are explained. Comparisons are done with ASCE 7-16 and AS/NZS 1170.2 wind loading standards. For the floor surface, the study suggests a wind pressure zoning and pressure coefficients for each stilt height.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the seismic performance of high-rise reinforced concrete (RC) box-type wall structures commonly used for most residential buildings in Korea. For this purpose, an analytical model was calibrated with the results of the earthquake simulation tests on a 1:5 scale 10-story distorted model. This calibrated model was then transformed to a true model. The performance of the true model in terms of the stiffness, strength, and damage distribution through inelastic energy dissipation was observed with reference to the earthquake simulation test results. The model showed high overstrength factors ranging from 3 to 4. The existence of slab in this box-type wall system changed the main resistance mode in the wall from bending moment to tension/compression coupled moment through membrane actions, and increased the overall resistance capacity by about 25~35%, in comparison with the common design practice of neglecting the slab's existence. The flexibility of foundation, which is also commonly neglected in the engineering design, contributes to 30~50% of the roof drift in the stiff direction containing many walls. The possibility of concrete spalling and reinforcement buckling and fracture under the maximum considered earthquake (MCE) in Korea appears to be very low when compared with the case of the 2010 Concepcion, Chile earthquake.
