In this study, styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS)-styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) modified asphalt was prepared for waterproof-sheet to measure its properties including softening point, penetration, low temperature flexibility, viscosity and adhesion. Then the properties of SIS-SBS modified asphalt imparted with self-healing were optimized to seek for optimal compositions of SIS and SBS versus asphalt according to response surface methodology (RSM). As the content of SBS or SIS was increased, both properties of softening point and viscosity, measured at high temperature, were increased with a statistical significance. However, the increments of softening point and viscosity per unit content of SBS added, were observed to be greater than those per unit content of SIS added, respectively. It was due to the difference of thermal properties of SBS and SIS at high temperature that the cross-linking degree of SBS was increased by gelation accompanied with the increase of viscosity, while chain-entanglement of SIS was relatively reduced owing to a chain scission of poly(isoprene) blocks causing the decrease of viscosity. To the contrary, SIS-SBS modified asphalt showed a behavior of the least elasticity resulting in both the maximum of penetration and adhesion, measured at room temperature, as well as the lowest low temperature flexibility at the composition of SIS, 4 g and SBS, 8.5 g based on asphalt, 63 g.
Purpose: Rice starch is known not to be suitable to Mook. Its gel is not hard and elastic enough and too sticky. This study investigated the effects of agar, carrageenan, and gelatin addition on low amylose rice flour paste and gel properties for making Mook. Methods: Angemi, low amylose rice, and Goamibyeo, intermediate amylose rice, were dry milled. The properties of Mook were determined by texture profile analysis (TPA), cold storage stability, and sensory acceptance. Results: Addition of agar and carrageenan increased cold paste viscosity, whereas addition of gelatin decreased cold paste viscosity while improving breakdown and setback viscosity. When 30% of gelling agents such as agar, carrageenan, and gelatin were added to low amylose rice, Angemi, Mook-like gels were formed. The hardness, adhesiveness, and springiness of gelling reagent-added Angemi Mook increased, whereas cohesiveness decreased, and fracturability was not observed. The addition of gelling agent decreased lightness and increased yellowness. Angemi Mook added with gelatin showed the best freeze-thaw stability while addition of agar and carrageenan increased syneresis. The carrageenan-added Angemi Mook was equal to Goamibyeo 100% Mook in all sensory acceptance properties without significant difference. Conclusion: Above results suggest that addition of carrageenan and gelatin to low amylose rice can be used to produce Mook with improved physical properties.
The use of clean gaseous fuels for the purpose of high efficiency and low emission in automotive engines has tendency to increase in order to meet the reinforcing emission regulations and to efficiently utilize limited natural resources. Automotive companies developed and commercialized a LPG liquid injection system, which is mounted on LPLi(Liquid Phase LPG Injection) engines and vehicles based on this research trend. This research examines the biggest problem in LPLi engine, that is, the leakage characteristics of low viscosity LPG fuel according to the injector design variables. This study is also aimed to improve the performance of fuel-leakage in LPLi engine through the addition of a lubrication improver in HFRR(High Frequency Reciprocating Rig) facility. The needle displacement and the spring displacement of an LPLi injector are found to be already optimized. The possibility of a maximum of 70% leakage reduction compared to a conventional case, is verified when 1000ppm of a lubrication improvement material is added and 40% increase of a injector spring constant (K) is applied.
Ag thick film conductors were fabricated with Ag powders having different degree of dispersion and glasses having different viscosity, and then the relationship between microstructure and electrical properties of the Ag films was investigated. Under the same processing condition. the Ag thick film that was prepared with the well-dispersed Ag powder and glass having low viscosity had denser microstructure and lower resistance than those of the film which was fabricated with the agglomerated Ag powder and glass having high viscosity It is believed to be due to the fast micro rearrangement kinetics when the well dispersed Ag powder was used, and all the microstructure development kinetics were impeded when low viscosity glass used. It was found that theme fast microstructure development kinetics resulted in the dense microstructure and the lower sheet resistance of the films. Also, the saturation time, at which at a given temperature no further decrease in the sheet resistance was obtained, was found to be shortened when well-dispersed Ag powder and low viscosity glass were used.
Associating polymers act as flocculants in colloidal suspensions, because the hydrophobic groups (hydrophobes) can adsorb onto particle surfaces and create intermolecular cross-linking. The steady-shear viscosity and dynamic viscoelasticity were measured for suspensions flocculated by multichain bridging of associating polymers. The effects of surfactant on the suspension rheology are studied in relation to the bridging conformation. The surfactant molecule behaves as a displacer and the polymer chains are forced to desorb from the particle surfaces. The overall effect of surfactant is the reduction of suspension viscosity. However, the additions of a small amount of surfactant to suspensions, in which the degree of bridging is low, cause a viscosity increase, although the number of chains forming one bridge is decreased by the forced desorption of associating polymer. Since the polymer chains desorbed from one bridge can form another bridge between bare particles, the bridging density over the system is increased. Therefore, the surfactant adsorption leads to a viscosity increase. The surfactant influences the viscosity in two opposing ways depending on the degree of bridging.
In order to characterize the thermal conductivity and viscosity of grout materials used for backfilling ground heat exchangers, nine bentonite grouts and cement grouts being adapted in the United State have been considered in this study. The bentonite grouts indicate that the thermal conductivity and viscosity increase with the content of bentonite or filler (silica sand). In addition, material segregation can be observed when the viscosity of grout is relatively low. The saturated cement grouts appear to possess much higher thermal conductivity than the saturated bentonite grouts, and the reduction of thermal conductivity in the cement grouts after drying specimens is less than the case of the bentonite grouts. Maintaining the moisture content of grouts is a crucial factor in enhancing the efficiency of ground heat exchangers.
A newly designed pressure-scanning slit viscometer is developed to combine an optical device without refraction while measuring blood viscosity over a range of shear rates. The capillary tube in a previously designed capillary viscometer was replaced with a transparent slit, which is affordable to mount optical measurement of flowing blood cells. Using a pressure transducer, we measured the change of pressure in a collecting chamber with respect to the time, p(t), from which the viscosity and shear rate were mathematically calculated. For water, standard oil and whole blood, excellent agreement was found between the results from the pressure-scanning slit viscometer and those from a commercially available rotating viscometer. This new viscometer overcomes the drawbacks of the previously designed capillary viscometer in the measuring whole blood viscosity. First, the pressure-scanning slit viscometer can combine an optical instrument such as a microscope. Second, this design is low cost and simple (i.e., ease of operation, no moving parts, and disposable).

Glass viscosity effects on the electrical properties and microstructure of RuO2 based thick film resistors (TFR) using alumina modified lead borosilicate glasses were studied. AT 85$0^{\circ}C$, the glass viscosities were increased from 4.24Pa.s to 51.5Pa.s when the alumina was added from none to 14 weight percent to the standard glass of 63% PbO, 25% B2O3 and 12% SiO2. The resistivities of resistors were generally decreased and the microstructure development was retarded as the viscosity of the glass increased. This is contrary to the generally accepted thought that the low resistivity is due to fast microstructure development kinetics in TFR. Even though the glass viscosity retards the microstructure development kinetics, the overall network formations are favored for higher viscosity of glass, such that the sheet resistivities were decreased as the glass viscosity increased.
The Korean rice, Nonglim # 6 was milled into brown rice and 92% polished one and packed with the kraft paper bags. The sample, bags were irradiated with the respective doses of 30, 50, 600 and 800 Krad and then were stored at $10^{\circ}C$ and 75% RH. Changes of fat acidity, amylase activity, viscosity of thus irradiated rice were examined during storage. The results were as follows. 1) Fat acidity increased slightly in the range of $30{\sim}50$ Krad but remarkably in the range of $600{\sim}800$ Krad. However, the rate of increase was low in comparison with the storage under the room temperature. 2) The amylase activity of both the low dose lot and the control decreased in the same rate during the storage. However the high dose lot had more remarkable decrease of the amylase activity from the beginning. 3) The viscosity by Brabender amylogram showed the slightly decreasing tendency in both the low $30{\sim}50$ Krad lot and the control lot of the polished rice powder during storage. On the other hand, the high dose lot of 600 or 800 Krad marked the similar decreasing rate but by far the lower values of the viscosity. 4) The results of the organoleptic test presented no differences between the low dose lot and the control lot, but the high dose lot and the control lot differed significantly only in the color.
