  • Natural hydraulic lime (NHL) is produced by burning a form of low-grade limestone containing silica and alumina which, above certain temperatures, combine with calcium oxide. The resulting silicates and aluminates impart hydraulic properties to the product. This study aims to determine the calcined characteristics of NHL using domestic low-grade limestone with maximized hydraulic properties. Six types of low-grade limestone containing $SiO_2$ were selected and experiments were carried out with different burning temperatures and holding times. The burning temperature and holding time as the most suitable burning conditions were $1,200^{\circ}C$ to $1,300^{\circ}C$ and 3 to 7 h, respectively, for the manufacturing of NHL from domestic low-grade limestone. These results demonstrate the feasibility of NHL using domestic low-grade limestone to produce NHL.

  • This study was to investigate the firing method of limestone in Joseon Dynasty, and analyze the physical chemical properties of lime mortars in Joseon Dynasty. This study was to manufacture and evaluate the firing experiment and mortar of Limestone by each sort in order to reproduce the traditional lime mortars in Joseon Dynasty, and investigate the behavior to improve physical properties according to the firing method of Limestone. This study has found out that there were screening criteria and standard of appropriate firing temperature about the Limestone in Joseon Dynasty. Accordingly, this study was to improve its strength through various additives and mixture. In particular, in case of Limestone, the black and blue Limestone were preferred, and most of domestic Limestones were low grade Limestone including the clay and took ivory white or blue with low whiteness. This study has shown that the low grade Limestone was mined by the surface mining compared with the high grade Limestone as underground mining method, and could be used because it was easy to mine relatively and there was possibility that Natural Hydraulic Lime(NHL) was used with the traditional lime mortars in Joseon Dynasty.

  • The study was performed with low-grade limestone, which is used to make cement or is disposed of due to its low CaO content. In this study, the optimal condition of limestone with which to manufacture precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) and limestone in fiber was determined through in-situ reactions. The best firing condition is with slaked lime with rapid cooling after 2 h of firing at $1000^{\circ}C$. In addition, the content of CaO can be increased by sorting the low-grade limestone using a 200 mesh filter, and the optical quality of old newspaper (ONP) was similar when using both low-grade and high-grade limestone. Also, controlling the particle size of PCC is an important factor pertaining to the optical characteristics of paper.

  • Desulfurization reaction in a bubble type reactor was carried out by adding three organic acids such as acetic acid, lactic acid, and antic acid to investigate the enhancement of the desulfurization performance of low-grade limestone. Desulfurization of limestone slurry without organic acids initiated to degrade at pH 5.2 or less, whereas organic acid-added limestone slurry exhibited a stable efficiency in the initial desulfurization with slurry pH ranging 4.2~4.5. At slurry pH below 4, the desulfurization performance of limestone slurry with addition of organic acids may be related to the amount of anions produced by dissociation of the organic acids. When limestone slurry had a large amount of anions, a rapid decrease in buffer capacity of slurry pH did not occur. These results were due to the acidity and dissociation of organic acids. The desulfurization performance of low-grade limestone slurry increased in the order of acetic acid (2.6%) < lactic acid (6.4%) < formic acid (16.7%).

  • This study focuses on the simulation of wet flue gas desulfurization process for improving the production of gypsum by the utilization of low-grade limestone. At present, high-grade limestone with a $CaCO_3$ content of 94% is used for producing merchantable gypsum. In modeling process, a lot of reactions are considered to develop model. First, the limestone dissolution is simulated by RSTOIC model. Second, SOx absorption and crystallization is used by RCSTR model. Finally the gypsum is separated by using SEPERATORS model. Modeling steps make it easy to reflect further side reactions and physical disturbances. In optimization condition, constraints are set to 93% purity of gypsum, 94% desulfurization efficiency, and total use of limestone at 3710 kg/hr. Under these constraints, the mass flow of low-grade limestone was maximized. As a result, the maximum blending quantity of low-grade limestone for 2,100 kg of high-grade limestone that satisfies constraints is about 1,610 kg.

  • This study aims to produce dolomitic hydraulic lime (D-NHL) using domestic low grade dolomitic limestone and to determine the effect of adding blast furnace slag (BFS) and gypsum as part of an investigation of the hydration properties of D-NHL to increase the mechanical properties. The main mineral phases of D-NHL as a hydraulic lime binder were $Ca(OH)_2$, $Mg(OH)_2$, $C_2S$, $C_3S$, and MgO residues. $Ca(OH)_2$ transformed into $CaCO_3$ in D-NHL paste over the period of 28 days, but the carbonation of $Mg(OH)_2$ and the hydration of $C_2S$ did not occur until hydration, after 28 days. Through an investigation of the hydration properties of D-NHL pastes mixed with BFS and gypsum, Al-based compounds such as calcium aluminate hydrates ($C_4AH_{13}$) and ettringite were observed at early hydration time. The compressive strength was improved due to the increased quantities of these hydration products. These results show that good performance results from the application of dolomitic hydraulic lime and that a high value product can be made from domestic waste materials.

  • The cement clinker, the main raw material of cement, is manufactured using limestone as the main material. Depending on the quality of limestone, the use of subsidiary materials changes, and has a great influence on the production of cement clinkers. In this study, the effect of CaO content of limestone, a cement clinker material, on Raw Mill grinding and sintering of cement clinker was investigated. The grinding time of the union materials changed in the content of limestone CaO was measured to identify the grinding properties. The raw material combination was cleaned within a range of 1,350-1,500℃. The sintering performance of cement clinker by Burnability index calculation was identified. The lower the grade of limestone, the lower the grinding quality of the raw material combination. The lower the CaO content of limestone, the greater the variation in F-CaO for sintering temperature. The lower the class of limestone, the higher B. I. value was calculated, indicating the lower cement clinker sintering. In addition, the mineral analysis results of cement clinker showed that if the F-CaO value was low due to the increase in sintering temperature, the Belite content decreased and the Alite content increased. In the case of Alite, the ratio of R-type decreased and that of M-type increased as the content of limestone CaO increased.

  • The main mineral phases of natural hydraulic lime (NHL) as a hydraulic lime binderare $Ca(OH)_2$, $C_2S$, $C_3S$, $C_3A$, and $SiO_2$ residues. Also, NHL has the characteristic of setting and hardening by a hydration reaction with water and by carbonation reactions with carbon dioxide from the air. In this study, in an effort to investigate changes of the mineral phases by NHL hydration and carbonation reactions, transitions of mineral phases and the microstructures of hardened pastes were analyzed by XRD, DSC, SEM, and by pore size distributions using domestic and foreign-sourced NHL pastes after curing at 1, 3, 7, and 28 days. On the basis of the analysis results, it was confirmed that domestic low-grade limestone can be used for the manufacturing of NHL. The main hydration mineral phases were $Ca(OH)_2$, $CaCO_3$, $C_2S$, and $SiO_2$ residues, while in the case of foreign-sourced NHL, a small amount of an aluminium hydration phase formed. Also, the $CaCO_3$ content after the carbonation reaction increased with an increase in the curing time. After hydration for 28 days, NHL containing considerable amounts of $C_2S$ and $C_3S$ showed higher carbonation ratios than others types.
