  • A moored floating structure may exhibit resonant motion responses to low-frequency excitations. Similar to the resonant responses of many vibration systems, the motion amplitude of a moored floating structure is significantly affected by the damping of the entire system. In such cases, the damping contributed by the mooring lines sometimes accounts for as much as 80% of the total damping. While the damping induced by catenary mooring lines is well-investigated, few studies have been conducted on the damping induced by taut mooring lines, especially one partly embedded in soil. The present study develops a simple but accurate model for estimating the damping contributed by mooring lines. A typical type of taut mooring line was used as the reference and the hydrodynamic drag force and soil resistance were taken into consideration. The proposed model was validated by comparing its predictions with those of a previously developed model and experimental measurements obtained by a physical model. Case studies and sensitivity studies were also conducted using the validated model. The damping induced by the soil resistance was found to be considerably smaller than the hydrodynamic damping. The superposition of the wave frequency motion on the low-frequency motion was also observed to significantly amplify the damping induced by the mooring lines.

  • Friction characteristics of automotive friction materials containing different metallic fibers rubbing against Al-MMC and cast iron disk specimens have been studied. Friction materials containing aluminum, copper or low steel carbon fiber were tested. Friction tests were composed of three different phases to investigate the effect of temperature, pressure, speed, and drag time. The results showed that the friction material containing Al fibers has lower friction force and wear amount than the others with Cu or Steel fiber. On the other hand, the wear of friction material was severe in the case of using Al-MMC rotors. These results showed that the thermal decomposition of solid lubricants (and organic components), formation of transfer layer, and SiC particles in the AI-MMC rotor play crucial roles in determining the friction characteristics.

  • This study is to develop a 1kW-class horizontal axis wind turbine(HAWT) rotor blade which will be applicable to relatively low wind speed regions in southwest islands in Korea. Shape design of 1kW-class small wind turbine rotor blade is carried out using a blade profile with relatively high lift to drag ratio by blade element momentum theory(BEMT). Aerodynamic analysis on the newly designed rotor blade is performed with the variation of tip speed ratio. Power coefficient and pressure coefficient of the designed rotor blade are investigated according to tip speed ratio.

  • Several formulae have been proposed to estimate the viscous resistance of ships by wake surveys. Both the total head and the velocity should be measured. The integration of he total head loss shows over estimations of the resistance by about 10%. Therefore measurements of the velocity are required, which need much more works. A simple method is suggested in this paper to take accout of the velocity-defect from the measured total head. It gives reasonable estimations of the viscous resistance within the experimental accuracy. Experimental data of a low-drag body of revolution in the wind-tunnel and Series 60 model, CB=0.6 in the tank are used to verify the suggested formula.

  • Effects of the oscillating incoming flow on vortex shedding and lock-on behind a square cylinder are investigated using numerical simulations at a Reynolds number of 100. Vortex shedding occurred at low forcing frequencies of the incoming flow similar to the natural vortex shedding. As the forcing frequency further increases, the shedding frequency decreases to the half of the forcing freqnency. For a sufficiently large frequency, vortex shedding returns to the natural vortex shedding irrespective of the forcing amplitude. Also, the lock-on region becomes wider with higher forcing amplitudes. The phase diagram between the drag and lift shows a simple periodic behavior in the lock-on region, while a complicated periodic phase relation is observed when there is no lock-on.

  • Super-cavitating flows around under-water bodies are being studied for drag reduction and dramatic speed increase. In this paper, high speed super-cavitating flow around a two-dimensional symmetric wedge-shaped body were studied using an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver based on a cell-centered finite volume method. To verify the computational method, flow over a hemispherical head-form body was simulated and validated against existing experimental data. Various computational conditions, such as different wedge angles and caviation numbers, were considered for the super-cavitating flow around the wedge-shaped body. Super-cavity begins to form in the low pressure region and propagates along the wedge body. The computed cavity lengths and velocities on the cavity boundary with varying cavitation number were validated by comparing with analytic solution.

  • In wind turbine blades, airfoils are required to have different spec when compared with airplane airfoil. Airfoils for wind turbine blade must have a high lift-to-drag ratio, moderate to high lift and especially low roughness sensitivity. Also an operation Re. No.s are lower than conventional airplane airfoils. At mid-span and inboard region, structural problems have to be considered. Especially, for stall regulated type, moderate stall behavior is essential part of design. For these reasons, airfoil design for HAWT blade is essential part of blade design. In this paper, root airfoil and tip airfoil are discussed. For a root region, 24% thickness airfoil is designed and for a top region, 12% thickness ratio is done. A inverse design method and panel method are used for rapid airfoil design. In this paper, a design method, features of airfoil shape and characteristics are discussed.

  • I discuss implications of gamma-ray emission from blazars based on electron acceleration by shock waves in a relativistic jet. The number spectrum of electrons turns out to be a broken power law; while at low energies the power law index has a universal value of 2, at high energies it steepens to an index of 3 because of strong radiative cooling. This spectrum can basically reproduce the observed spectral break between X-rays and gamma-rays. I show that energetics of relativistic jets can be well explained by this model. I estimate physical quantities of the relativistic jets by comparing the prediction with observations. The results show that the jets are particle dominated and are comprised of electron-positron pairs. A connection between gamma-ray emission and radiation drag is also discussed.

  • One of the devices to prevent separated flow over a wing or a flap at high angle of attack is a vortex generator. In the present work, we numerically study the flow around a low-profile or micro vortex generator whose height is less than local boundary layer thickness which can delay separation with a minimum drag penalty owing to its very small wetted surface area. As a first step toward a parametric study to efficiently design this MVG flow control system, we simulate the flow around a single MVG on a flat plate. For the simulation, we employ OpenFOAM with Launder-Sharma ${\kappa}$-epsilon model. The analysis results are validated by comparing with experimental results of a rectangular MVG at an angle of attack of 10 degrees whose height is 20% of local boundary layer. Important results and aspects of this numerical study are discussed. We also simulate the flow around rectangular, triangular and trapezoidal MVGs and the results are compared
