In the present study, rotating bending fatigue tests have been carried out in three kinds of carbon steel specimens; an annealed low carbon steel, an annealed high carbon steel and quenched-tempered high carbon steel; with a small artificial surface defect that might exist in real structures. Fatigue crack lengths have been observed by a method of replication in order to investigate the growth characteristic of fatigue crack in the viewpoints of strength of materials and fracture mechanics. The main results obtained are as follows: 1) The effect of a small surface defect upon the reduction of fatigue limit is considerably large, and the rate of fatigue limit reduction grows in the following order; annealed low carbon steel(mild steel), annealed high carbon steel, quenched-tempered high carbon steel. 2) When the growth rate of surface crack length(2a) was investigated in the viewpoints of fracture mechanics based upon $ ${\Delta}K_{\varepsilon}$, the dependence of stress level and of surface defect size disappear, and there exists a linear relationships between d(2a)/dN and ${\Delta}K_{{\varepsilon}t},\;\Delta_{{\varepsilon}t}\sqrt{{\pi}a}$, on log. plot, i.e, $d(2a)/dN={C{\cdot}{\Delta}K_{\varepsilon}}^3_t$, where ${\Delta}_{{\varepsilon}t}\sqrt{{\pi}a}$ a is the cyclic total strain intensity factor range.
The laser welding and its analysis of thin-sheet carbon steels were carried out with high power CO$_2$1aser. Bead on plate welding of thin sheet was examined to investigate the effect of weld variables of laser welding, and to obtain optimum welding condition. Butt-welding was also carried out to show the effect of gap on the laser weldability of thin sheet. At high welding speed, the partial penetration was obtained by low heat input. Otherwise, porosity was formed in the bead at low weld speed because of too many heat input. The maximum gap tolerance on laser welding was observed to be about 0.2mm. This gap size has good relationship with beam size of laser spot(about 0.3mm). The formability of welded sheet was about 80% value of base metal and the gap size has not affected on the formability, although weld quality is dependent on the gap size.
Linepipe steels with a low carbon acicular ferrite microstructure have been recently developed to accommodate the current transportation condition of the gas and oil industry, and they are finally applied to West- East pipeline project in China. By adopting acicular microstructure, both better formability and better toughness could be obtained due to low yield ratio and fine grained microstructure. Mechanical properties of pipe are not greatly different from those of base plates or hot coils with a microstructure of acicular ferrite. Merits of introducing higher strength steels are well known, i.e., reducing the gauge of pipe and the material cost, increasing the welding speed and decreasing construction cost because of reducing the construction period. Threfore, gas and oil industry has required higher strength steel than APIX70 grade steel. Under this background, API-X80 steel has been developed and shall be applied to the several projects. In this paper, developing stage of API-X80 steel is also presented and discussed.
Low carbon steel of composition 0.05C - 0.18 Mn - 0.012 Si is intercritically annealed at temperatures $750^{\circ}C$, $775^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$. The equilibrated alloys of different amounts of austenite with varying carbon contents are quenched in iced water. The same alloys are subcritically annealed at $675^{\circ}C$ and $700^{\circ}C$ for varying periods of times; the subcritically annealed alloy samples are quenched in iced water. Optical, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy are carried out for all the samples. The dislocation structure, its distribution and density present in the above prepared duplex ferrite martensite steels are studied. The martensites are found to be highly dislocated due to lattice invariant deformation. At the same time ferrite adjoining the martensite areas also exhibits quite a high dislocation density. The high dislocation density is favorable for strain ageing and hence bakes hardenability. EDS analyses were carried out for both martensite and ferrite phases; it is found that the degree of supersaturation in ferrite together with carbon content in martensite varies with the process parameters. The microhardness test results show that the hardness values of different phases differ appreciably with process parameters. The microstructures and the corresponding microanalyses reveal that differently processed steels contain phases of varying compositions and different distribution.
The laser welding and its analysis of thin-sheet carbon steels were carried out with high power $CO_{2}$ laser. The main factor of weld quality of laser welding is gap and edge quality. This work was preformed to focus on the gap tolerance problem during laser welding. First, bead on plate welding of thin sheet was examined to investigate the effect of laser welding variables, and to obtain optimum welding condition. Butt welding was also carried out to show the effect of gap on the laser weldability of thin sheet. In order to investigate the effect of gap on formability of welded thin sheet, LDH test was caried out. At high welding speed, the partial penetration was obtained by low heat input. Otherwise, porosity was formed in the bead at low weld speed because of too much heat input. The optimum welding condition of welding was derived from bead width, penetration and hardness property. The maximum gap tolerance on laser welding was observed to be about 0.2mm. This gap size has good relationship with beam size of laser spot(about 0.3mm). The formability of welded sheet was about $80{\%}$ value of base metal and the gap size has not affected on the formability, although weld quality is dependent on the gap size.
This study investigates the effects of corrosion resistance characteristics of opponent materials in relative motion on the sliding wear behavior of mild carbon steel. Pin specimens made of mild carbon steel are tested at several sliding speeds against mating discs made of two types of alloyed steels, such as type D2 tool steel (STD11) and type 420 stainless steel (STS420J2), with different corrosion resistance characteristics in a pin-on-disc type sliding wear test machine. The results clearly show that the sliding wear behavior of mild carbon steel is influenced by the corrosion resistance characteristics of the mating disc materials at low sliding speeds. However, the sliding wear behavior at high sliding speeds is irrelevant to the characteristics because of the rising temperature. During the steady state wear period, the sliding wear rate of mild carbon steel against the type 420 stainless steel at a sliding speed of 0.5 m/s increases considerably unlike against the type D2 tool steel. This may be because the better corrosion resistance characteristics achieve a worse tribochemical reactivity. However, during the running-in wear period at low sliding speeds, the wear behavior of mild carbon steel is influenced by the microstructure after heat treatment of the mating disc materials rather than by their corrosion resistance characteristics.
The effects of oxidation behavior on the hot ductility of plain carbon steels were investigated at various temperatures in order to simulate the continuous casting process more precisely, in which the process undergoes in air atmosphere rather than Ar atmosphere. The high temperature oxidation behavior and scale morphology of the carbon steels exposed to the air and Ar atmosphere at various temperatures were also investigated in order to assess the mechanism of the RA value decreasing in an air atmosphere. The RA values obtained from the air atmosphere were marked below 45% by the test temperature, except for over 1000${^{\circ}C}$, with the RA values remaining in low values in both the low and high temperature region, at which the RA values generally recovered in the Ar atmosphere. The surface roughness of the specimen was developed by external and internal oxidation when the specimen was deformed in an air atmosphere at high temperature, with the result being the stress concentrated at the roughness of the specimen surface, resulting in low RA values. The hot ductility in the air atmosphere was found to be likely controlled by the oxidation rate instead of the microstructures corresponding to test temperatures.
This study has been conducted to establish the carburizing characteristics of low carbon alloy steels with varying amount of Ni element gas-carburized for 2 hours at $930^{\circ}C$ in an atmosphere of 94% $N_2$-6% $C_3H_8$ gas mixture with some changes in gas pressure passing through the diffusion plate in the fluidized-bed furnace. The results obtained from the experiment are as follows : (1) Optical micrograph has shown that the carburized layer consists of retained austenite and plate martensite and that retained austenite increases as the pressure of gas mixture passing through the diffusion plate as well as Ni content increase. (2) Chemical analysis has shown that carbon potential increases and carburizability is also improved due to a less degree of fluidization as the pressures of gas mixtures passing through the diffusion plate increase, resulting in, however, a severe formation of soot, and the gas pressure is necessarily regulated. (3) It has been revealed that carbon concentration hardness values at a given distance measured from the surface within the carburized case. Increase with increasing the pressure of gas mixtures passing through the diffusion plate and decrease with increasing Ni content. (4) The effective case depth has been shown to almost linearly increase as the pressure of gas mixtures passing through the diffusion plate is increased and to decrease with increasing Ni content.
In Nb, V and Ti added steels, carbo-nitrides are formed due to their strong interaction with C and N. The formation of carbo-nitrides has an important role to control the microstructure as well as mechanical properties by grain size refinement and precipitation hardening. However, the quantitative analysis of distribution of precipitates and the effect of precipitates on the phase transformation and mechanical properties are still far from satisfactory. In this study, the quantitative analysis of precipitates in austenite was investigated using the fact that the formation of precipitates in Nb, V and Ti added steels accelerates austenite/ferrite transformation. The formation of precipitates was controlled by adjusting holding temperature and time in austenite region, transformed Volume fractions were measured by dilatometer during slow cooling, Iso-precipitation kinetics were determined by comparing 5% and 50% volumes transformed at various conditions respectively. The result was compared with the calculated.
The aim of this research is to develop the TRIP aided high strength low carbon steels using reverse transformation process. The $4\~8\%$ Mn steel sheets were reversely transformed by slow heating to intercritical temperature region and furnace cooling to room temperature. The stability of retained austenite depends on the enrichment of carbon and manganese by diffusion during the reverse transformation. The amount of retained austenite formed after reversely transformed at $625^{\circ}C$ for 6 hrs was about $50\;vol.\%$ in the $8\%Mn$ steel. The change in volume fraction of retained austenite with a holding temperature was consistent with the changes in elongation and the strength-ductility combination. The maximum strength-ductility combination of 40,000 $MPa{\cdot}\%$ was obtained when the $8\%Mn$ steel reversely transformed at $625^{\circ}C$ for 12 hrs. However, it's property was significantly decreased at higher holding temperature of $675^{\circ}C$ resulting from the decrease of ductility.
