The T23 steel, whose composition was Fe-2.3%Cr-1.6%W, was arc-melted, and oxidized between $600^{\circ}C$ and $900^{\circ}C$ in air for up to 7 months. The amount of precipitates in the arc-melted microstructure was as large as 11.4 vol.%. The precipitates increased the oxidation rate of the arc-melted T23 steel. Owing to the low amount of Cr in the T23 steel, breakaway oxidation occurred after a few hours during oxidation above $700^{\circ}C$ in both arc-melted and as-received T23 steels. The scales that formed on arc-melted and as-received T23 steels were similar to each other. They consisted primarily of the outer $Fe_2O_3$ layer and the inner ($Fe_2O_3$, $FeCr_2O_4$)-mixed layer. The precipitates increased the microhardness and the oxidation rates.
A study was made to examine the characteristics of base metal and stress relief cracking(SRC) of heat affected zone(HAZ) for HY-100 and Cu-bearing HSLA-100 steels. The Gleeble thermal/mechanical simulator was used to simulate the SRC/HAZ. The details of mechanical properties of base plate and SRC tested specimens were studied by impact test, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The specimens were aged at $650^{\circ}C$ for HSLA-100 steel and at $660^{\circ}C$ for HY-100 steel and thermal cycled from $1350^{\circ}C$ to $25^{\circ}C$ with a cooling time of $\Delta$t_${800^{circ}C/500^{circ}C}$=21sec. corresponds to the heat input of 30kJ/cm. The thermal cycled specimens were stressed to a predetermined level of 248~600MPa and then reheated to the stress relief temperatures of $570~620^{\circ}C$. The time to failure$(t_f)$ at a given stress level was used as a measure of SRC susceptibility. The strength, elongation and impact toughness of base plate were greater in HSLA-100 steel than in HY-100 steel. The time to failure was decreased with increasing temperature and/or stress. HSLA-100 steel was more susceptible to stress relief cracking than HY-100 steel under same conditions. It is thought to be resulted from the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu phase by dynamic self diffusion of solute atoms. By the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu phase, the differential strengthening of grain interior relative to grain boundary may be greater in the Cu-bearing HSLA-100 steel than in HY-100 steel. Therefore, greater strain concentration at grain boundary of HSLA-100 steel results in the increased SRC susceptibility. The activation energies for SRC of HSLA-100 steel are 103.9kcal/mal for 387MPa and 87.6kcal/mol for 437MPa and that of HY-100 steel is 129.2kcal/mol for 437MPa.
Plasma nitrocarburising is a thermochemical heat treatment, and can be used for plain carbon steels and low alloy steels to improve wear, corrosion and fatigue resistance. The process is performed on automotive parts, machinery parts and engineering tools. However, it is still facing problems in obtaining a mono $\varepsilon$ phased compound layer. Therefore, the aim of this research is to investigate the possibility of forming a mono $\varepsilon$ phased compound layer using a gas mixture of nitrogen and methane. It was found that high nitrogen contents were essential for the production of $\varepsilon$ phase compound layer and with increasing methane content in the gas mixture, $\varepsilon$ phase compound layer was favoured. In addition, when the methane content was further increased, cementite was observed in the compound layer. $\gamma$' phase was produced after 10 minutes treatment time and cementite was formed in the compound layer resulting in decreasing the thickness of the compound layer.
Although heat treatment is a process of great technological importance in order to obtain desired mechanical properties such as hardness, the process was required a tedious and expensive experimentation to specify the process parameters. Consequently, the availability of reliable and efficient numerical simulation program would enable easy specification of process parameters to achieve desired microstructure and mechanical properties without defects like crack and distortion. In present work, the developed numerical simulation program could predict distributions of microstructure and thermal stress in steels under different cooling conditions. The computer program is based on the finite difference method for temperature analysis and microstructural changes and the finite element method for thermal stress analysis. Multi-phase decomposition model was used for description of diffusional austenite decompositions in low alloy steels during cooling after austenitization. The model predicts the progress of ferrite, pearlite, and bainite transformations simultaneously during quenching and estimates the amount of martensite also by using Koistinen and Marburger equation. To verify the developed program, the calculated results are compared with experimental ones of casting product. Based on these results, newly designed heat treatment process is proposed and it was proved to be effective for industry.
Irradiation-induced changes in mechanical properties and magnetic parameters were measured and compared to explore possible correlations for Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel surveillance specimens which were irradiated to a neutron fluence of $2.3\times10^{19}n/cm^2$(E>1.0MeV) in a typical pressurized water reactor environment at about $288^{\circ}C$. For mechanical property parameters, microvickers hardness, tensile and Charpy impact test were performed and Barkhausen noise amplitude, coercivity, remanence, maximum induction were measured for magnetic parameters. respectively. Results of mechanical property measurements showed an increase in yield and tensile strength, microvickers hardness. 41J indexed $RT_{NDT}$ and a decrease in upper shelf energy irrespective of base and weld metals. However, in the case of tensile properties, the changes in weld metal were negligible compared to the base metal. In the case of magnetic measurements, it is found that magnetic remanence, BN amplitude. BN energy have dropped significantly but coercivity(H,) has increased rapidly after irradiation. In this study. the measurements conducted on surveillance specimens of Mn-Mo-Ni low alloy steel showed that there were strong correlations between mechanical properties and magnetic properties.

High pressure turbine blades are one of the key components in fossil power plants operated at high temperature. The blade is usually made of 12Cr steel and its operating temperature is above $500^{\circ}C$. Long term service at this temperature causes material degradation accompanied by changes in microstructures and mechanical properties such as strength and toughness. Quantitative assessment of reduction of strength and toughness due to high temperature material degradation is required for residual life assessment of the blade components. Nondestructive technique is preferred. So far most of the research of this kind was conducted with low alloy steels such as carbon steel, 1.25Cr0.5Mo steel or 2.25Cr1Mo steel. High alloy steel was not investigated. In this study one of the high Cr steel, 12Cr steel, was selected for high temperature material degradation. Electrochemical polarization method was employed to measure degradation. Strength reduction of the 12Cr steel was represented by hardness and toughness reduction was represented by change of transition temperature, FATT. Empirical relationships between the electrochemical polarization parameter and significance of material degradation were established. These relationship can be used for assessing the strength and toughness on the aged high pressure blade components indirectly by using the electrochemical method.

The secondary hardening and fracture behavior in P/M high speed steels bearing V content of 9 to 10 wt% have been investigated in terms of austenitizing temperature and precipitation behavior. Austenitizing was conducted at 1,100 and $1,175^{\circ}C$ of relatively low and high temperatures. Coarse primary carbides retained after austenitization were mainly V-rich MC type. They give a significant influence on hardeness and toughness, as well as wear resistance. Tempering was performed in the range of $500{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. The peak hardness resulting from the precipitation of the fine MC secondary carbides was observed near 520, irrespective of austenitizing temperature. Aging acceleration(or deceleration) did not occur with increasing austenitizing temperature because it mainly influences contents of V and C of matrix through the dissloution of coarse primary MC containing lots of V and C. The precipitation of secondary MC carbides, which also contain V and C, did not change the aging kinetics itself. In the 10V alloy containing much higher C content, the impact toughness was lower than 9V alloy, because of the larger amount of primary carbide and high hardness.

9% nickel alloy steels used for LNG, cryogenic liquid, storage tank are welded with dissimilar Inconel or Hastelloy welding rod and the weldment shows similar characteristic with the dissimilar metal weld of low carbon steel and austenitic stainless steel. Band type indications are sometimes shown on the film during radiography test of the weldments. Thus this study identified whether the indications are non-relevant indications through material, radiographic test, ultrasonic test, liquid penetrant test and microstructure analysis and also proposed radiography film interpretation and cause of band type indications.
The change of microstructure in the bonded interlayer and mechanical properties of the joints were investigated during Transient Liquid Phase Diffusion Bonding(TLP bonding) of STS304/SM17C and STS304/SM45C couples using Ni base amorphous alloys added boron and prepared alloy as insert metal. Main experimental results obtained in this study are as follows: 1) Isothermal solidification process was completed much faster than theoretically expected time, 14ks at 1473K temperature. Its completion times were 3.6ks at 1423K, 2.5ks at 1473K and 1.6ks at 1523K respectively. 2) As the concentration of boron in the insert metal increased, the more borides were precipitated near bonded interlayer and grain boundary of STS304 side during isothermal solidification process, its products were $M_{23}P(C,B)_6}_3)$ The formation of grain boundary during isothermal solidification process was completed at structural carbon steel after starting the solidfication at STS304 stainless steel. 4) The highest value of hardness was obtained at bonded interface of STS304 side. The desirable tensile properties were obtained from STS304/SM17C, STS304/SM45C using MBF50 and experimentally prepared insert metal with low boron concentration.

An empirical relationship between parameters from SP curves and tensile properties has been systematically investigated by experimental tests and FEM simulations. A series of SP and tensile tests were performed. SP tests were also simulated by FE analysis with various tensile properties. It was found that the yield loads(Py) and the maximum loads( $P_{MAX}$) in SP curves were linearly related with the yield strength($\sigma$$_{o}$) and the tensile strength($\sigma$$_{UTS}$), respectively. The yield loads defined from the intersection point of two lines tangent to the elastic bending region and plastic bending region showed better relation to the yield strength than those from offset line. The maximum loads in SP curves showing plastic instability region was linearly related with the tensile strengths. The slope of SP curves in simulation results had a close correlation with the hardening coefficient and hardening strength as well.l.l.l.
