Non-stationarity and non-Gaussian property are two of the most important characteristics of wind. These two features are studied in this study based on wind speed records measured at different heights from a 325 m high meteorological tower during the synoptic wind storms. By using the time-frequency analysis tools, it is found that after removing the low frequency trend of the longitudinal wind, the retained fluctuating wind speeds remain to be asymmetrically non-Gaussian distributed. Results show that such non-Gaussianity is due to the weak-stationarity of the detrended fluctuating wind speed. The low frequency components of the fluctuating wind speeds mainly contribute to the non-zero skewness, while distribution of the high frequency component is found to have high kurtosis values. By further studying the decomposed wind speed, the mechanisms of the non-Gaussian distribution are examined from the phase, turbulence energy point of view.
The wind-power among the new and renewable energies uses the wind, a limitless, clean and pure energy which is available at any place. It requires low installation cost compared to the generation of other renewable energies, and is easy to operate, and furthermore, can be automated for operation. Korea has been taking a great deal of interest in the development of renewable energy generating equipment, specifically wind power generation as the nation has a nearly total reliance on imported petroleum. A measuring poll 30m high was installed at a location with an altitude of 142m above the sea level in order to measure and analyze the wind power potentiality at H University's Asan Campus, and the wind velocity and wind direction were measured for 1 year. As for the wind power resource of the area adjacent to Asan campus, the Weibull Distribution coefficient was C=2.68, K =1.29 at H30m. Weibull Distribution coefficient was modified on the basis of compensated wind velocity (=3.1m/s) at H 60m, and the energy density was $42W/m^2$. AEP 223,750 KWh was forecast based on the simulation of an 800KW grade wind turbine. It is considered that the wind power generation has to be studied further in the inland zone with low wind velocity to cope with the possible exhaustion of fossil fuel and ensure a sustainable environmental preservation.
This paper discussed the Feasibility study of wind power generation considering the topographical characteristics of Korea. In order to estimate the exact generation of wind power plants, we analyzed and compared wind resources in mountain areas and plain areas by introducing not only wind speed, the most important variable, but also wind distribution and wind standard deviation that can reflect the influence of landform sufficiently. According to the results of this study, generation was almost the same at wind power plants installed in southwestern coastal areas where wind speed was low as at those installed in mountain areas in Gangwondo where wind speed was high. This demonstrates that the shape parameter of wind distribution is low due to the characteristics of mountain areas, and the standard deviation of wind speed is large due to the effect of mountain winds, therefore, actual generation compared to southwestern coastal areas is almost similar in mountain areas even though wind speed is high.
Climatic characteristics were described using the LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and the met-mast on Dongbok·Bukchon region. The influences of meteorological conditions on the power performance of wind turbines were presented using the data of Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) and met-mast of the Dongbok·Bukchon Wind Farm (DBWF) located in Jeju Island. The stability was categorized into three parameters (Richardson number, Turbulence intensity, and Wind shear exponent). DBWF was dominant in unstable atmospheric conditions. At wind speeds of 14 m/s or more, the proportion of slightly unstable conditions accounted for more than 50%. A clear difference in the power output of the wind turbine was exhibited in the category of atmospheric stability and turbulence intensity (TI). Particularly, a more sensitive difference in power performance was showed in the rated wind speeds of the wind turbine and wind regime with high TI. When the flow had a high turbulence at low wind speeds and a low turbulence at rated wind speeds, a higher wind energy potential was produced than that in other conditions. Finally, the high-efficiency of the wind farm was confirmed in the slightly unstable atmospheric stability. However, when the unstable state become stronger, the wind farm efficiency was lower than that in the stable state.
Conceptual study of an open-circuit type low-speed wind tunnel for test of wind turbine blade is conducted. The tunnel is constituted of a settling chamber, a contraction, closed and open test sections, a diffuser, two corners, a cross leg and a fan and motor. For the performance test, the closed test section width of 1.8 m, height of 1.8 m and length of 5.25 m is selected. The open test section with dimension width of 1.8 m, height of 1.8 m and length of 4.14 m is adopted for aeroacoustic test. The contraction ratio is 9 to 1 and maximum speed in the closed test section is 67 m/sec. Input power in the tunnel is about 238 kW and its energy ratio is 3.6. The wind tunnel designed in present study will be an effective tool in research and development of wind turbine.
This paper presents a methodology for spatial extrapolation of wind-induced pressure time series from a corner bay to roof locations on a low building away from the corner through the application of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD). The approach is based on the concept that pressure time series in the far field can be approximated as a linear combination of a series of modes and principal coordinates, where the modes are extracted from the full roof pressure field of an aerodynamically similar building and the principal coordinates are calculated from data at the leading corner bay only. The reliability of the extrapolation for uplift time series in nine bays for a cornering wind direction was examined. It is shown that POD can extrapolate reasonably accurately to bays near the leading corner, given the first three modes, but the extrapolation degrades further from the corner bay as the spatial correlations decrease.
This study analytically evaluated the seismic performance of wind-designed diagrid tall steel buildings in regions of moderate/low seismicity and strong winds. To this end, diagrid tall steel buildings with varying wind exposure and slenderness ratio (building height-to-width ratio) conditions were designed to satisfy the wind serviceability criteria specified in the Korean Building Code and the National Building Code of Canada. A series of seismic analyses were then performed for earthquakes having 43- and 2475- year return periods utilizing the design guidelines of tall buildings. The analyses demonstrated the good seismic performance of these wind-designed diagrid tall steel buildings, which arises because significant overstrength of the diagrid system occurs in the wind design procedure. Also, analysis showed that the elastic seismic design process of diagrid tall steel buildings might be accepted based on some wind exposures and slenderness ratios.
This paper presents the analysis of wind speeds data measured on top of three neighboring high-rise buildings close to a beach in Xiamen city, China, during Typhoon "Usagi" 2013. Wind tunnel simulation was carried out to validate the field measurement results. Turbulence intensity, turbulence integral scale, power spectrum and cross correlation of recorded wind speed were studied in details. The low frequency trend component of the typhoon speed was also discussed. The field measurement results show turbulence intensity has strong dependence to the wind speed, upwind terrain and even the relative location to the Typhoon center. The low frequency fluctuation could severely affect the characteristics of wind. Cross correlation of the measured wind speeds on different buildings also showed some dependence on the upwind terrain roughness. After typhoon made landfall, the spatial correlation of wind speeds became weak with the coherence attenuating quickly in frequency domain.
This paper presents an approach for evaluating directionality effects for both wind speeds and wind loads in hurricane-prone regions. The focus of this study is on directional wind loads on low-rise structures. Using event-based simulation, hurricane directionality effects are determined for an open-terrain condition at various locations in the southeastern United States. The wind speed (or wind load) directionality factor, defined as the ratio of the N-year mean recurrence interval (MRI) wind speed (or wind load) in each direction to the non-directional N-year MRI wind speed (or wind load), is less than one but increases toward unity with increasing MRI. Thus, the degree of conservatism that results from neglecting directionality effects decreases with increasing MRI. It may be desirable to account for local exposure effects (siting effects such as shielding, orientation, etc.) in design. To account for these effects in a directionality adjustment, the factor described above for open terrain would need to be transformed to other terrains/exposures. A "local" directionality factor, therefore, must effectively combine these two adjustments (event directionality and siting or local exposure directionality). By also considering the direction-specific aerodynamic coefficient, a direction-dependent wind load can be evaluated. While the data necessary to make predictions of directional wind loads may not routinely be available in the case of low-rise structures, the concept is discussed and illustrated in this paper.

Wind power is one of the most reliable renewable energy sources and the installed wind turbine capacities are increasing radically every year. Although wind power has been favored by the public in general, the problem with the impact of wind turbine noise on people living in the vicinity of the turbines has been increased. Low noise wind turbine design is becoming more important as noise is spreading more adverse effect of wind turbine to public. This paper demonstrates the design of 10 kW class wind turbines, each of three blades, a rotor diameter 6.4m, a rated rotating speed 200 rpm and a rated wind speed 10 m/s. The optimized airfoil is dedicated for the 75% spanwise position because the dominant source of a wind turbine blade has been known as trailing edge noise from the outer 25% of the blade. Numerical computations are performed for incompressible flow and for Mach number at 0.145 and for Reynolds numbers at $1.02{\times}10^6$ with a lift performance, which is resistant to surface contamination and turbulence intensity. The objective in the low design process is to reduce noise emission, while sustaining high aerodynamic efficiency. Dominant broadband noise sources are predicted by semi-empirical formulas composed of the groundwork by Brooks et al. and Lowson associated with typical wind turbine operation conditions. During the airfoil redesign process, the aerodynamic performance is analyzed to minimize the wind turbine power loss. The results obtained from the design process show that the design method is capable of designing airfoils with reduced noise using a commercial 10 kW class wind turbine blade airfoil as a basis. The new optimized airfoil clearly indicates reduction of total SPL about 3 dB and higher aerodynamic performance.
