Performance Analysis of a Flow Passage Opening Device through Low Speed Aircraft Captive Flight Tests

  • In a pressurized fuel supply system of aircraft, a flow passage opening device is required to keep fuel continuously transferred from one tank to the other. The device utilizes balancing weights in order to follow up an acceleration at special conditions such as negative g. It is very difficult to test the device in a real high-speed and high-altitude test since severe test conditions and expensive supports are needed. Therefore, this paper deals with performance analysis of a flow passage opening device through low speed aircraft captive flight tests (CFT) including roll and negative-g maneuvers. It is shown that balancing weights in the device can open the passage in accordance with fuel position.

PTV 계측법에 의한 극저비속도 원심펌프의 내부유동특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Internal Flow Characteristics of a Very Low Specific Speed Centrifugal Pump by PTV)

  • In the range of very low specific speed ($n_s<0.25$, non-dimensional), the performance of a centrifugal pump is much different from that of a centrifugal pump of normal ns and the efficiency of the pump drops rapidly with the decrease of $n_s$. In order to examine the reason of unstable performance characteristics of the very low $n_s$- centrifugal pump, the internal flow of the pump with a semi-open impeller is measured by a PTV(Particle Tracking Velocimetry) system. The purpose of this study is to make clear the internal flow characteristics and to obtain basic knowledge of the pump performance. The results show that the leakage flow through tip clearance give a strong effect on the flow pattern of impeller passage. A large vortex in the impeller passage and a strong reverse flow at impeller outlet are formed in the range of small flow rates, and the vortex and the reverse flow together reduce the absolute tangential velocity at the impeller outlet and cause the performance instability.

Investigation on the Internal Flow Characteristics of the Low Specific Speed Centrifugal Pump with Circular Casing

  • As a suitable volute configuration in the range of low specific speed, circular casing is suggested in this study. The internal flows in a centrifugal pump with the circular and spiral casings are measured by PIV and analyzed by CFD. The results show that the head and efficiency of the pump by a circular casing of very small radius are almost same as those by the spiral casing. Even at the best efficiency point, the internal flow of the pump by circular casing is asymmetric, and vortex and strong secondary flow occurs in the impeller passage. The radial velocity becomes higher remarkably only near the region of the discharge throat. The flow in the impeller outlet is strongly controlled by the circular casing because the velocity distribution almost does not affected by the position of the impeller blades.

  • In this paper, a mathematical model for a ship manoeuvring with low forward speed in shallow water was suggested. Based on the cross flow model with low forward speed in deep sea, hull, propeller and rudder models were modified to consider the shallow water effects. Static drift and PMM tests were performed to obtain the cross flow drag coefficients and hydrodynamic coefficients. To validate suggested mathematical model, numerical simulation results were compared with those of sea-trials. Through comparisons, it was concluded that suggested mathematical model could give proper estimation on turning test results.

A Numerical Study on the Flow around a Rudder behind Low Speed Full Ship

  • The development of a high-lift rudder is needed because low speed full ships such as the VLCC(Very Large Crude oil Carrier) have difficulty for obtaining enough lifting force from a common rudder. The rudder of a ship is generally positioned behind the hull and propeller. Therefore, rudder design should consider the interactions between hull, propeller, and rudder. In the present study, the FLUENT code and body fitted mesh systems generated by the GRIDGEN program are adopted for the numerical simulations of flow characteristics around a rudder that is interacting with hull and propeller. Sliding mesh model(SMM) is adopted to analyze the interaction between propeller rotation and wake flow behind hull. Several numerical simulations are performed to compare the interactions such as hull-rudder, propeller-rudder, and hull-propeller-rudder. Also, we consider relationships between the interactions. The results of present numerical simulations show the variation of flow characteristics by the interaction between hull, propeller, and rudder, and these results are compared with an existing experimental result. The present study demonstrates that numerical simulations can be used effectively in the design of high-lift rudder behind low speed full ship.

  • The correlations for cross-flow have not been well established, because of the complexity of breakup and atomization mechanism. A study was performed to investigate the characteristics of spray behaviour of liquid jet in the bag breakup regime injected into low-speed cross-flow with the pressure single-hole nozzle. The shadow-graphy method was used for the cross-flow jet visualization. The experimental variables of liquid jet were nozzle diameter $(0.3mm{\sim}1.0mm)$, injection pressure $(50kPa{\sim}150kPa)$, and the velocity of cross-flow $(27m/s{\sim}42m/s)$. The highest penetration trajectories of liquid jet are governed by the momentum ratio $({\rho}_{\iota}U_{\iota}^2/{\rho}_aU_{cross}^2)$ rather than the Weber number and the new empirical equations of the highest penetration trajectory and breakup point at low-speed corss-flow are established.

마이크로채널 내부의 저속 유동장 수치해석 (Numerical Analysis of Low-Speed Flows in Micro-Channels)

  • Low-speed gas flows in micro-channels are investigated using a kinetic theory analysis. The Boltzmann equation simplified by a collision model is solved by means of a finite difference approximation with the discrete ordinate method. Calculations are made for flows in simple micro-channels and a micro-fluidic system consisting of two micro-channels in series. The results are compared well with those from the DSMC method and an analytical solutions to the Wavier-Stokes equations. It is shown that the present method is a useful tool for the modeling of low-speed flows in micro-channels.

Preconditioning을 이용한 전속도 영역에 대한 압축성 유체유동해석 (A Time-Derivative Preconditioning Method for Compressible Flows at All Speeds)

  • Enhancement of numerical algorithms for low speed compressible flow will be considered. Contemporary time-marching algorithm has been widely accepted and applied as the method of choice for transonic, supersonic and hypersonic flows. In the low Mach number regime, time-marching algorithms do not fare as well. When the velocity is small, eigenvalues of the system of compressible equations differ widely so that the system becomes very stiff and the convergence becomes very slow. This characteristic can lead to difficulties in computations of many practical engineering problems. In the present approach, the time-derivative preconditioning method will be used to control the eigenvalue stiffness and to extend computational capabilities over a wide range of flow conditions (from very low Mach number to supersonic flow). Computational capabilities of the above algorithm will be demonstrated through computation of a variety of practical engineering problems.

금정산 풍하측 저고도의 강풍 현상 (On the Low Level Strong Wind Occurring at the Downwind Side of the Kumjeong Mountain.)

  • We identified two characteristic turbulent flow cases, weakening and strengthening, which appear at the downwind side. Observations were made two times, Dec. 2-3. 1995 and Feb. 13-14. 1996 at Pusan National University site located downwind side of Kumjeong mountain. Meteorological observation system, tethersonde, was adopted to present observation. In the case of the west wind which blows perpendicular to Sanghak mountain located westward from the site, the wind speed highly increased in exponential with height. Therefore, the low level wind speed was so weak just like Taylor(1988)'s review. While the wind speed was intensified at 200-400m layer when the northwest wind blows from the continental Siberian high. We suppose 기 is because of the strong vertical convergence of flow between the surface inversion layer and the upper one, and also the horizontal convergence along the saddle and valley between the two mountains, Kumjeong and Sanghak-because of Bernoulli's effect. The inversion layer existed at surface-l00m and 500-600m level and the strong wind existed at about 200-400m layer.

교통기본도와 운전자 행태에 대한 미시적 분석 (A Microscopic Analysis on the Fundamental Diagram and Driver Behavior)

  • PURPOSES : The fundamental diagram provides basic information necessary in the analysis of traffic flow and highway operation. When traffic flow is congested, the density-flow points in the fundamental diagram are widely scattered and move in a stochastic manner. This paper investigates the pattern of density-flow point transitions and identifies car-following behaviors underlying the density-flow transitions. METHODS : From a microscopic analysis of 722 fundamental diagrams of NGSIM data, a total of 20 transition patterns of fundamental diagrams are identified. Prominent features of the transition patterns are explained by the behavior of the leader and follower. RESULTS : It is found out that the average speed and the speed difference between the leader and the follower critically determine the density-flow transition pattern. The density-flow path is very sensitive to the values of vehicle speed and spacing especially at low speed and high density such that most fluctuations in the fundamental diagram in the congested regime is due to the noise of speed and spacing variations. CONCLUSIONS : The result of this study suggests that the average speed, the speed difference between the leader and the follower, and the random variations of speed and spacing are dominant factors that explain the transition patterns of a fundamental diagram.
