This study was to evaluate the antioxidant properties of the leaf extracts of Diospyros lotus (DLE) on the chemical-induced free radical and rat red blood cell (RBC) oxidative damage in vitro. DLE were prepared by extracting with water. DLE showed the high antioxidant activities on the scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)-induced radicals. An antioxidant activities of DLE was similar to the reference antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and (${\pm}$)6-hydroxy-2,5,7,8-tetramethylchromane-2-carboxylic acid (Trolox). Reducing power of $1,000{\mu}g/mL$ DLE also was similar to the vitamin C. In RBC, oxidative hemolysis induced by the aqueous peroxyl radical generator (2,2'-Azobis (2-methylpropionamidine) dihydrochloride (AAPH)) were significantly suppressed by DLE in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, DLE prevented the depletion of cytosolic antioxidant glutathione in RBC damaged with AAPH. These results suggest that DLE may has value as natural product with its high quality antioxidant properties against oxidative stress.

In this study the antimicrobial activity of the extract from leaves of lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) was evaluated in comparison with benzoic acid. The $70\%$ ethanol extract was fractionated subsequently by hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, butanol and water, and the antimicrobial activity of each dried fraction was tested by paper disk diffusion method. The ethyl acetate fraction exhibited strong antimicrobial activity on the five strains of food born bacteria e.g. Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella Typhimurium and Pseudomonas nuorescens. The antimicrobial activity of the fraction was stronger than benzoic acid and showed no appreciable difference between on $Gm^+$ and $Gm^-$ bacteria. Heat treatment of the fraction at $110^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr did not change the degree of inhibitory effect. The ethyl acetate fraction showed almost perfect growth inhibition on the tested strains at over 800 ppm.
To investigate the anti-thrombotic activities of the lotus (Nelumbo nucifera Gaertner), various hot-water extracts were prepared from the leaf, pod of seed (PS), seed, embryo of seed (ES), root, and the node of root (NR) of the lotus. The highest extraction ratio was found in the NR (20.3%), followed by the seed, root, leaf, ES, and PS. These extracts had pH and acidity levels ranging from 5.6~6.5 and 0.06~0.20%, respectively. The seed extract showed 70% brix, whereas the leaf and PS extracts showed less than 0.1% brix. The highest contents of total polyphenol (179.7 mg/g), total flavonoids (161.4 mg/g), and reducing sugar (161.4 mg/g) were observed in the leaf extract, and the highest total sugar content (873.0 mg/g) in the seed extract. Anti-coagulation assay of the extracts of NR, leaf, and PS showed strong activities. In particular, at a concentration of 5 mg/ml, the PS extract had 15-fold extended thrombin, prothrombin, and activated partial thromboplastin times. However, only the ES extract showed activities inhibitory to platelet aggregation, with treatment with 0.25 mg/ml of ES extract decreasing platelet aggregation to 25.1%, a reduction comparable to that effected by aspirin. The extracts other than the seed extract showed no hemolysis activities against human RBC at treatments of up to 1 mg/ml. These results suggest that the NR, PS, seed, and ES, all byproducts of the lotus agriculture industry, have high potential as novel sources of anti-thrombotic agent.
In this study, the antioxidant activities and nitrite scavenging abilities of olive leaf fractions acquired from plants cultivated in Australia (Olea europaea L. var. Picual) and Spain (Olea europaea L. var. Hojiblanca) were evaluated. Oleuropein was found to be the major phenolic compound in the leaves, with the butanol fractions presenting the highest contents. Antioxidant activity was evaluated in terms of superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydroxyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, and the inhibitory effect on the auto-oxidation rate of linoleic acid. The SOD-like activities of the olive leaf extracts ranged from 0 to 36.8%. DPPH radical scavenging activity was highest in the ethanol extract of the Australian cultivated olive leaves. Finally, the chloroform fractions of the extracts showed inhibitory effects on the auto-oxidation rate of linoleic acid as well as nitrite scavenging ability.

This study aims to find an original form of temple flower decoration patterns, considering floral lattice pattern as a view element composing temple landscape. To that end, we analyzed and interpreted the form and symbol expressed in the floral lattice pattern at Nahanjeon of Seonghyel Temple at Yeongju, Gyeongsangbukdo. The front side of Nahanjeon windows shows a sculpture with 176 pure patterns in a form where two squares are in sequence. The basic concept of main front door (the inner gate of Nahanjeon) frames is considered the design language of lotus pond that symbolizes "square land" in traditional gardens. The four leaf clover and arrowhead are water plants discovered in areas nearby ponds, which are a realistic expression conforming to the water ecology of lotus pond. The lotus, which is the most important plant at the main front door, indicates purity, a non-stained state, and the world of the lotus sanctuary, which is the land of blissful happiness in Buddhism. The lotus expressed in the floral lattice pattern is spread in a diverse form, containing the features of creation and destruction, showing the landscape character of the "One Body of Buddha and Lotus". The expression of flying birds such as kingfishers and egrets is an ecologically aesthetic idea to infuse dynamism and vitality into a seemingly static aquatic ecosystem. The floral lattice pattern contains lotus pond scenery showing symbiosis of animals(i.e., dragons, frogs, crabs, fishes, egrets, wild geese, and kingfishers) and plants(i.e., four leaf clovers and arrowheads), which are symbols of relief faith for longevity, wealth, preciousness, and many sons. The pattern is not just an ecological aesthetic expression but a holistic harmony of ecological components such as growth and disappearance of lotus and its leaves, fitting habitats, symbiosis, and food chain.

Oleuropein content of olive leaf extracts (OLE; ethanol extract) was evaluated by high performance liquid chromatography analysis. Oleuropein contents were $4.21{\pm}0.57$, $3.92{\pm}0.43$, $0.32{\pm}0.03$, $5.76{\pm}0.32$, and $32.47{\pm}0.25$ mg/100 g for ethanol extract, and hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and butanol fraction, respectively. The removal of DPPH free radical increased in OLE and all 5 fractions of OLE in a concentration dependent manner. In order to investigate the antioxidant effect of OLE in vitro, 80%(v/v) ethanol OLE, $H_2O_2$, or combined treatment of 80%(v/v) ethanol OLE and $H_2O_2$ were applied on mouse embryonic fibroblast (MEF) cells. Cells were damaged by oxidative stress decreased their viability followed by increasing concentration of $H_2O_2$, but co-treatment of OLE and $H_2O_2$ showed an increase in cell growth about 20% compare to the cells treated with $H_2O_2$. OLE suppresses cytotoxicity induced by $H_2O_2$ in dose dependent manner. OLE treatment on MEF cells was also examined by analyzing cell cycle and apoptotic rate using flow cytometry. Apoptotic and necrotic cell accumulation was decreased in addition of OLE to $H_2O_2$ compare to the oxidative damaged cells. Taken together, these results demonstrated that OLE suppresses cytotoxicity induced by $H_2O_2$ and protect cells against oxidative stress on MEF cells.
Lotus root, dried laver, and perilla leaf bugak, Korean traditional fried cuisine, were prepared with fermented glutinous rice batter and unroasted sesame oil or wheat flour batter and soybean oil and their physicochemical characteristics was evaluated. Bugak with fermented glutinous rice batter and unroasted sesame oil showed higher hardness, possibly brittleness than bugak with wheat flour batter and soybean oil. Oil absorption was higher in bugak with fermented glutinous rice batter and unroasted sesame oil than bugak with wheat flour batter and soybean oil, however, the lipid oxidation, evaluated by conjugated dienoic acid and p-anisidine values, was significantly lower in bugak with fermented glutinous rice batter and unroasted sesame oil. Frying oil strongly influenced the degree of lipid oxidation and fatty acid composition of bugak lipid. Different preparation of bugak did not show great effects on the contents of chlorophylls and carotenoids of dried laver and perilla leaf bugak, possibly due to protection by rice or wheat flour batter coating.

Efficient plant regeneration system of birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus L.) was development. The factors affecting the somatic embryo formation, its proliferation and regeneration capacity of leaf and stem explants of Empire cultivar was investigated. The highest number of somatic embryos was obtained on B5 medium supplemented with 1 mg/L NAA and 1 mg/L BA. Depending on different explants, highest frequency of embryogenic callus and regeneration were observed in Empire with leaf explants. The response from stem explants was slower and callus induction was less than that from leaf explants. Regenerated shoots formed complete plantlets in on 1/2 MS medium supplemented with 1 mg/L IBA. Regenerated plants were morphologically uniform with normal shape and growth pattern.

Diospyros lotus has been cultivated for its edible fruits, which are considered to have medicinal importance. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antipruritic activities of water-soluble, methanol extract, and ethyl acetate (EA) fractions from D. lotus leaves. The EA fraction showed the lowest $IC_{50}$ vale (DPPH: $5.3{\mu}g/mL$, ABTS: $53.8{\mu}g/mL$). Therefore, we further investigated anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects of the EA fraction. TNF-${\alpha}$ production increased by PMA plus A23187 treatment was significantly inhibited by the EA fraction in a dose-dependent manner. The EA fraction also inhibited histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells stimulated by compound 48/80, which promotes histamine release. Furthermore, EA fraction had inhibitory effects on scratching behavior induced by compound 48/80 in Balb/c mice. These results suggest that the EA fraction from D. lotus leaves has potential as ameliorative agent against oxidative stress and pruritus-related disease.
