To improve the fishing environment of Alaska pollack fishing ground of the East coast in Korea, lost fishing gear were recovered from June to July 1998, May 1999 and from July to August 1999 in the sea near Goseong, Gangwon province. The lost fishing gear was recovered by grapnel. As the results, the lost fishing gear, which was consist of gill nets and traps, was produced from fishing activities, whereas most of them was the bottom gill nets. The weight of lost fishing gears was gill nets of 1,170 t and traps off 4t. The recovered gill nets decreased 12.02 t per mile from 22.74 t, in 1998 to 10.72 t, in 1999. Recovery rate of lost fishing gear was low as 38% in 1998, 41.9% in 1999 and CPUE was 11.27 t/trial in 1998, 7.48 t/trial in 1999. The recovery of lost fishing gear in fishing ground by using grapnel was considered as a useful method.

This paper was concentrated on the distribution and the composition of lost fishing gear on the sea bed around yellow croaker fishing ground in the near sea of Jeju, Korea from April to October 2009 in order to improve the fishery environment. Recovering lost fishing gears was carried out total 10 times with a trawlnet along the isobath. As the result, it seems reasonable to conclude that the amount of lost fishing gear has a deep connection with the dip of the sea bed as well as the fishing gear scale, fishing ground and so on. The amount of recovered lost fishing gears were in order of gillnets, dragged gears, traps and ropes. In particular, traps were recovered almost every time within the survey area.

As a series of fundamental researches on the development of an automatic identification monitoring system for fishing gear. Firstly, the study on the installation method of automated identification buoy for the coastal improvement net fishing net with many loss problems on the west coast was carried out. Secondly, the study was conducted find out how to install an automatic identification buoy for coastal gill net which has the highest loss rate among the fisheries. GPS for fishing was used six times in the coastal waters around Seogwipo city in Jeju Island to determine the developmental status and underwater behavior to conduct a field survey. Next, a questionnaire was administered in parallel on the type of loss and the quantity and location of fishing gear to be developed and the water transmitter. In the field experiment, the data collection was possible from a minimum of 13 hours, ten minutes to a maximum of 20 hours and ten minutes using GPS, identifying the development status and underwater behavior of the coastal gillnet fishing gear. The result of the survey showed that the loss of coastal net fishing gear was in the following order: net (27.3%), full fishing gear (24.2%), buoys, and anchors (18.2%). The causes were active algae (50.0%), fish catches (33.3%) and natural disasters (12.5%). To solve this problem, the installation method is to attach one and two electronic buoys to top of each end of the fishing gear, and one underwater transmitter at both ends of the float line connected to the anchor. By identifying and managing abnormal conditions such as damage or loss of fishing gear due to external factors such as potent algae and cutting of fishing gear, loss of fishing gear can be reduced. If the lost fishing gear is found, it will be efficiently collected.

The Fishing gear loss has been repeated every year in the West Sea; however, there has been no solution. So fisher men have undergone economic loss every year. Thus it is required to reduce the loss of fishing gear. In this study to find out the reason that the fishing gear is lost in the Sea, 10 years data of wave and current for 6 locations in the West Sea were investigated and a numerical modelling were conducted into the behaviour of a gillnet in wave and current. The fishing gear was modelled with the mass spring model. As a result, it came out into the open that the location where fishing gear loss occurred most frequently was Choongnam province. The height of the maximum significant wave in this province was 6.7 m and the period of that was 4.4 second. The maximum current speed was 0.7 m/s. As a result of simulation with these data, it was revealed that the buoy is one of the reasons to decrease the holding power of the gillnet. For example, the tension of anchor rope was decreased to 50% while the drag coefficient or volume of buoy was decreased to 25%. So it is predicted that an improvement of the buoy contributes to the reduction of the gillnet loss.

For environment-friendly fishery, the lead sinkers of octopus drift line were developed with the environmentfriendly sinker, and their characteristics and performance were investigated. To make the environmentfriendly sinker, the hydrate ceramic material was developed, and to increase the weight and strength, the iron power was added to it. The fishing hook was machine-made, and standardized, by using 60cm iron wire. For the manufacture of the sinker, the first, the mold was made, and then, hydrate ceramic material and water were quantitatively mixed. The mixture was poured into the mold prepared with a fishing hook already inserted, and had hardened for several hour, before it was taken out of the mold as a complete sinker. The sinkers were made in the 8 types ranging in weight from 150 to 500g, and their specific gravities were diverse from 2.871 to 6.637, which was 0.19 to 0.44 times lower than that of lead. The movement of the environment-friendly sinker by flume tank was possible in the weaker current speed than the similar lead sinker. In the coastal fishing grounds of Gangwon province, the comparison of catching efficiency was made between the improved fishing gears composed of the environment-friendly sinkers and artificial baits, and the current used fishing gears of lead sinkers and pig-fat baits. The result showed the tendency in which the improved fishing gears caught the bigger octopuses than the current used fishing gears. In the quantity and number of the fish catch per unit fishing gear, the improved fishing gear showed a little more catch than the current used fishing gear, regardless of the fishing area. However, the number of the improved fishing gears lost during fishing operation was similar to that of the current used fishing gears.
The real-name electric fishing gear system is one of the important policy capable to build 'abundant fishing ground' and to protect marine environment. And, fishing gear automatic-identification system is one of IoT services that can implement above-mentioned policy by using communication such as low power wide area (LPWA) and multi-sensing techniques. Fishing gear automatic -identification system can gather the location data and lost/hold data from electric buoy floated in sea and can provide them to fishermen and monitoring center in land. We have developed the communication modules and electric buoy consisted of fishing gear automatic-identification system. In this paper, we report the test results of communication distance between electric buoy and wireless node installed in fish boat and location error of electric buoy. It is confirmed that line of sight (LOS) distance between electric buoy and wireless node is obtained to be 62 km, which is two times of the desired value, and location error is obtained to be CEP 1 m, which is smaller than the desired value of CEP 5 m. Therefore, it is expected that service area and accuracy of the developed fishing gear automatic-identification system is more extended.
In order to prevent illegal fishing and reduce lost fishing gear, it is necessary to develop a constant and continuous fishing gear monitoring system in the marine environment. In this paper, we design a long-term operational, reliable system model with communication coverage of more than 25Km considering the reality of gradually expanding fishing activity due to the depletion of fishery resources and marine environments. The design results are implemented to verify the operability of the system by separating the communication success rate of SKT and private LoRa networks and verifying the control function of each control system through the collected location information, respectively.
According to the result of the recent survey on the current condition of loss of the fishing gears in the East, West and South seas, it is estimated that 50% of the fishing gears used for coastal trap and gill net fisheries are lost every year and 20~30% of those used for inshore trap and gill net fisheries are lost. It is reported that such loss of fishing gears leads to the loss of about 10% of 1.7M tons of the total annual catch from the gill nets and traps along the country's coasts and shores, which amounts to 15~170K tons. Submerged marine litters that have recently been accumulated because of the washed out or lost fishing gears significantly affect the development of fisheries resources as well as the natural environment. The purpose of this study is to identify the damages that the ever-increasing submerged marine litters of washed out fishing gears would have on the fishery and to analyze the effects of the coastal and inshore submerged marine litter collection business on the fishery management. For this, the economic analysis was carried out for the coastal and inshore submerged marine litter collection business based on the fishermen's expenses and earnings and their catch. The result of the analysis shows that the submerged marine litter collection business is quite effective in certain areas but rarely effective in other areas. However, taking into consideration that the litter collection would contribute to protecting the marine environment as well as the fisheries resources, it is expected to have a significant impact on the protection of the marine environment even in those areas where it is not effective for the protection of the fisheries resources.

The main purpose of this research is to analyze economic feasibility of biodegradable sonw crab gill net model project. The results of benefit/cost analysis show that use of the biodegradable gear is economically feasible. Assuming that the rate of gill net lost is 5 percent, net present value was estimated 311,898,282-590,533,375won, benefit-cost ratio 1.816-1.923 and internal rate of return 7.96-10.59%. The development and diffusion of biodegradable fishing gear appear to make a significant contribution to fisheries resource conservation and marine ecosystem protection. In addition, biodegradable gear production firms may have a good opportunity of exporting it to other coastal states, depending on the progress of WTO subsidy negotiation.

Author investigated the distribution of debris by a bottom trawler in the eight sea stations over the sea between Busan and Jeju island. 2,118 debris in number and 2,401.5kg in weight were collected. Most of collected debris were fishing gears which seemed to be lost or discarded during operations, and also most of the fishing gears was an eel pot. The densities of debris per hectare in number and weight were 1.21pieces and 2.639kg respectively. Station A was the highest densities compared to other stations, showing 2.7pisces and 4.9kg per hectare in number and weight. The closer to Busan it is, the higher density of debris can be collected.
