  • Recently, Interior Permanent Magnet Machine(IPM) is widely used for traction motor in the high speed train. Higher efficiency and power density are the superb performance of IPM. Due to the high power density, however, it has lots of heat source which are originated from copper losses and core losses. These heat source can cause the permanent demagnetization in magnet and the loss of torque and power. To prevent the undesirable loss in the traction motor, the accurate loss calculation and the thermal analysis should be preceded. Especially, the end-winding area and permanent magnet area should be examined correctly. In this paper, the electromagnetic fields were examined by finite element method to analyze the electromagnetic properties of IPM and thermal analysis are carried out with pre-calculated losses. To validate the analysis result, the experiment set with forced air cooling system is manufactured.

  • For ac applications a detailed understanding of the ac power losses associated with different conductor configurations is of crucial importance. YBCO thin films were divided into parallel filaments with widths of 1, 2, and 4 mm to reduce hysteresis losses. The measured hysteresis losses show a linear relationship between the strip width and hysteresis loss as anticipated. The influence of different inter-filament separations on the hysteresis loss is investigated.

  • In this paper, optimal stator slot shape of 3-phase inverter-fed induction motor is designed to reduce stator core and winding losses. For the analysis, the F.E.M on 1 phase band periodic condition in stator is coupled with harmonic equivalent circuit. For the optimal design, the conjugate gradient method is used as an optimizing algorithm. The stator core and winding losses are reduced by the design method. The results are verified by those of the time-step finite element analysis.

  • An anomalous magnetoresistance effect has been observed at very low temperatures for composite normal metal conductors. This anomalous behavior is due to transverse Hall currents in the composite which would result in increased $I^2R$ losses and a higher effective resistance for the composite conductor. In this paper, transverse current flow and effective resistance of Cu-Al double-strip was analyzed using finite element method for predicting the Hall losses to be resulted in anomalous magnetoresistance effect, and then be able to visualized.

  • Magnetization loss of high temperature superconductoring BSCCO tape and YBCO coated conductor(YBCOCC) is most important issue in the development of superconducting power devices. In this paper, the measured results of magnetization losses under various angles of external magnetic field in BSCCO tape stacked conductors and YBCO CC stacked conductors are presented and compared with each other. Also, we present the compared results of magnetization losses measured at arbitrary reaction magnetic fields and analyzed with perpendicular magnetic field components of those. The results show that magnetization losses of YBCO CC single and stacked conductors agree well with the analyzed value by it's perpendicular magnetic field component, but BSCCO single and stacked conductors are not.

  • In this paper, a series of electromagnetic analyses carried out for a high efficiency 22.9/0.38kV mold transformer are presented. The simulations were performed in order to calculate the losses which eventually verify the performance(efficiency) of the designed product. Here, losses include core loss, stray losses of non-current carrying metallic structural parts(core plate and clamp), ohmic loss and eddy current loss of current carrying metallic parts(busbars, leads, terminals and windings). The obtained results of the simulations were compared to the test results and showed high level of accuracy. The loss evaluation technology will allow designers avoid any potential over-design or under-design of the high efficiency products, reducing the manufacture cost and development period compared to the conventional experience-based design procedures.

  • In this study. an off-design performance prediction program for centrifugal pumps is developed. To estimate the losses in an impeller flow passage, two-zone model and two-element in series(TEIS) model are used. At impeller exit. the mixing process occurs with an increase in entropy. In two-zone model. there are both primary zone and secondary zone for an isentropic core flow and an average of all non-isentropic streamtubes respectively. The level of the core flow diffusion in an impeller was calculated by using TEIS model. While internal losses in an impeller an automatically estimated by using the above models, some empirical correlations far estimating external losses. far example, disk friction loss, recirculation loss and leakage loss are used. In order to analyze the vaneless diffuser flow. the momentum equations for the radial and tangential directions are used and solved together with continuity and energy equations.

  • To achieve high efficiency in high power and high frequency applications, reduction of switching losses and noise is very important. In this paper, an improved zero voltage switching forward dc/dc converter is proposed. The proposed converter is constructed by using energy recovery snubbers in parallel with the main switches and output diodes of the conventional forward dc/dc converter. Due to the use of the energy recovery snubbers in the primary and secondary side, the proposed converter achieves zero-voltage-switching turn-off without switching losses for switching devices and output rectification diodes. The complete operating principles and experimental results will be presented.

  • A ZVT PWM Boost Converter is proposed to reduce current stresses and conduction losses of main switch in a conventional circuit. By attaching resonant inductor Lr1 in parallel with capacitor Cr, the resonant circulating current is diverted to the additional component and then the main switch is subjected to minimum current stresses same as those in their PWM counterparts. Moreover, the operation of the auxiliary switch in a half wave mode to prevent reverse resonant energy from freewheeling can be able to lessen the conduction losses. The operation principles of the proposed converters are analyzed using the PWM boost converter topology as an example. Theoretically analysis and experimental results verify the validity of the boost converter topology with the proposed circuit.

  • In this paper, a new control strategy to reduce switching losses in three-phase voltage-source PWM converters is proposed according to Modified-Period-Average-Model (MPAN). The basic concept of this strategy is aimed at calculating the phase control voltages for controlling the source currents to be sinusoidal and in phase with the source voltages, and reducing the number of switching in each period. The phase control voltages of Period-Average-Model(PAM) is obtained according to analyzing the operation of PWM converter. In order to reduce the sensitivity to system parameters in PAM, MPAM is deduced. Then a square wave whose frequency is three times of utility frequency is added to the phase control voltages derived from MPAM. The control strategy reduces the switching losses since there exists about one-third blanking time for every phase in one period. The theoretical derivation and the control strategy are experimentally verified on a 2.5 kW three-phase voltage source converter.
