  • In the nuclear industry, wall thinning defect of straight pipe occur the enormous loss in life evaluation and safety evaluation. To use non-destructive technique, we measure deformation, vibration, defect evaluation. But, this techniques are a weak that is the measurement of the wide area is difficult and the time is caught long. In the secondary side of nuclear power plants mostly used steel pipe, artificiality wall thinning defect make in the side and different thickness make to the each other, wall thinning defect part of deformation measure by using shearography. In addition, optical measurement through deformation, vibration, defect evaluation evaluate pipe and thickness defects of pressure vessel is to evaluate quantitatively. By shearography interferometry to measure the pipe's internal wall thinning defect and the variation of pressure use the proposed technique, the quantitative defect is to evaluate the thickness of the surplus. The amount of deformation use thickness of surplus prediction of the actual thickness defect and approximately 7 percent error by ensure reliability. According to pressure the amount of deformation and the thickness of the surplus through DB construction, nuclear power plant pipe use wall thinning part soundness evaluation. In this study, pressure vessel of thickness defect measure proposed nuclear pipe of wall thinning defect prediction and integrity assessment technology development. As a basic research defected theory and experiment, pressure vessel of advanced stability and soundness and maintainability is expected to contribute foundation establishment.

  • The purpose of this study is to establish trail use impact indicators, and evaluate the degree of use impact based on the understanding of the causality among the impacts on the spot. Theoretical reviews developed three indicators in terms of three ecological impacts, four physical impacts, and five sociological impacts, respectively. With this indicators, observation and questionnaire survey were employed on Gwanak Mountain Trail to measure the levels of impacts forementioned. As for the ecological impact, Some loss of ground cover vegetation was reveled near the trail due to trail use, however the level of disturbance by the naturalized and exotic plants was insignificant. Physical impacts such as soil hardness, enlargement of trail width were found intensified. The result of measuring sociological impacts showed visitors had expected higher level of crowding and encounters before their visit, therefore overall satisfaction level was positive, despite higher awareness level of actual crowding. Intensified continuing use of the trail is aggravating ecological and physical impacts on Gwanak Mountain trail, because of its location in a metropolitan area. Sociological impacts seem favorable at present, however if ecological and physical impacts were deteriorated, sociological impacts would also be affected. To maintain the quality level of use experience, managerial efforts to improve climbing culture as well as ecological and physical environment such as restoration of damaged areas are needed.

  • A column study using artificial acid rain was conducted to evaluate the buffering capacities in soil layer and host rock. In an effort to compare the effect of composition of host root two valleys of which compositions of host rock are different were chosen within the study area and the pHs of the water flowing in the valleys were measured from May, 1996 to October, 1996. The pHs of the artificial acid rain prepared by adding appropriate amounts of both sulfuric and nitric acids to distilled water were 3, 4, and 5, and the column effluents were analyzed for major cations and anions. The cation exchange capacities(CECs) of A Horizon and the B Horizon were 9.68 and 6.16 meq/100g, respectively, Compared to the B Horizon, the pH in the column effluent of A Horizon with larger CEC was higher. The sums of $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Na^{+}$in the column effluents gradually decreased, indicating the loss of CEC by acid rain. The field study showed that pHs of the surface water in the valleys increased as the water flows downwards. The magnitude of this buffering capacity was greater for the valley in which smectite in addition to kaolinite and illite was a weathered product of host rocks. This also indicates that host rock as well as soil layer retains the buffering capacity.

  • Failure modes result in fracture or tearing, which may cause deterioration of resistance and reduction of inelastic deformation capacity. The potential failure modes for Special Concentrically Braced Frames (SCBFs) include fracture or tearing of the brace, net section fracture of the brace or gusset plate, fracture of the gusset plate welds, shear fracture of the bolts, block shear, excessive bolt bearing deformation, and buckling of the gusset plate. HSS tubular braces are commonly used in SCBFs, and net section fracture of the tubular brace may also occur through the brace net section at the end of the slot cut into the tube to slip over the gusset plate. This failure mode is categorized as a tension failure mode, and may cause dramatic loss of resistance and brittle behavior. Net section reinforcement is required according to AISC design specifications (AISC 2001). In this paper, the need to reinforce the net section area was discussed. Initially, the results of the net section fracture tests done by the University of California in Berkeley were presented with the modeling of these tests using FE models. To investigate the possibility of net section fracture in an actual frame, the slot end hole model was adapted to the frame FE model, and alternate near-fault histories were applied with tension-dominated cycles, since previous analyses showed that loading history was the most critical factor in net section fracture. The need for this reinforcement (cover plate) and the tension-dominated near-fault history were investigated.

  • In order to extract the spatio-temporal characteristics of long-term variability of the net heat flux on the sea surface in the East Asian marginal seas, empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis was conducted using data set calculated every 12 hours interval during 1978-1995. Among the first three modes explaining 73% of the total variance, the first mode having high peak at 1 year period indicates high variability area around the Sandong Peninsula and central and northeastern part of the East Sea. In the second mode which has spatial distribution of dipole type at the north and south, the peaks appear at 3.6 year and 2.3 year cycles. Time coefficient of the second EOF is believed to have close relation with the E1 Nino and has out-of-phase variation with NINO3 SST. Lagged correlation between NINO3 SST and time coefficient of the second EOF indicates four month time delay in the NINO3 SST. In the third mode which has opposite sign at the east and west, the periodicity of 6-9 year cycle has relatively clear appearance compared to other two EOFs. Also, high heat loss exceeding 800 W/$m^{2}$ in winter time occured at the south part of the Sandong Peninsula and Vladivostok. It reveals more frequent occurrence of about two times at the Sandong Peninsula than Vladivostok. The event is concentrated in January at Vladivostok, but it occurs primarily in December and January at the Sandong Peninsula.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the grain size distribution and organic matters to understand the current status of the tidal flat sediment for efficient management of Suncheon Bay. We investigated the characteristics of the surface sediments in the mouth area of the Suncheon Bay at fifteen stations in April and July, 2009. Specific conclusions were as follows. The sediments in the most part of tidal flat was shown as muddy facies(clay and silt contents was more than 90%), whereas in the tidal river affected by water flow from the Dongstream was shown as sandy facies. The analyzed values of the tidal flat sediment were in the range of $1.9{\sim}3.8{\phi}$(mean $2.5{\phi}$) for sorting, and -1.5~3.2(mean -0.3) for skewness, and 1.5~14.1(mean 3.9) for kurtosis. So we knew that the tidal flat sediments in the Suncheon Bay was mainly composed by fine-grained sediment. Erosion was happened in the tidal river, whereas sedimentation was occurred in the tidal flat. The most of organic matters was derived from the Dongstream. Total organic matters shown as ignition loss was 5.75%, COD and $H_2S$ values were lower than the eutrophication level(COD; 20.0 mg/g dry, $H_2S$; 0.2 mg S/g dry). From our research the tidal flat of the Suncheon Bay is relatively fine, but a part of the flat was exceed the environmental standard. So we have to establish effective countermeasures to reduce the organic matters and nutrients derived from stream for environmental preservation of the Suncheon bay and conduct scientifically sustainable monitering for streams flowing into Suncheon Bay and tidal flat.

  • Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare clinicopathologic entity of unknown etiology with a variety of digestive symptoms. The pathogenesis is poorly understood. Diagnostic criteria include demonstration of eosinophilic infiltration of the affected bowel wall, lack of evidence of extraintestinal disease, and exclusion of various disorders that could mimic similar conditions. The disease might involve any area of the gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the rectum, but the stomach and the proximal small bowel are most commonly affected. The clinical features depend on which layer and site are involved. We report the case of a 59-year-old male patient with a 3-week history of post-prandial vomiting with malnutrition and weight loss. An abdominopelvic CT showed a gastric outlet obstruction with diffuse wall thickening, as with linitis plastica. Three gastrofiberscopic biopsies showed chronic gastritis. We carried out a radical total gastrectomy with D2 lymph node dissection. The pathologic report revealed a mural type eosinophilic gastritis with a marked hypertrophic scar formation at the proper muscle layer. We report this case with a brief review of the literature. • This study focused on the nutrition knowledge, food purchase behaviors, and dietary habits of 213 housewives (41 women under 39 years, 98 women 40~49 years, and 74 women over 50 years). Younger housewives held more special jobs, whereas older housewives worked as housewives or had no jobs ($p$<0.05). The average monthly income of the three family groups was 3,000,000~5,000,000 won, and the monthly dietary expenditure for all three groups was 200,000~500,000 won. Familial frames for the three groups was nuclear family (over 80%), but housewives younger than 39 years (19.5%) lived together with their parents and let them take care of their children. Housewives (over 50 years) prepared a balanced diet for every meal, utilized less drastic cooking methods to prevent loss of nutrients, and shopped at many places in order to save money on various food materials. Further, they purchased food materials that resulted in the least amount of left overs. On the other hand, housewives under 39 years visited large supermarkets and purchased cooked foods more than other groups. Housewives under 39 years considered nutrients content as the most important factor when purchasing food materials, whereas 74.5% of housewives between 40~49 years and 51.4% of housewives over 50 years put the most importance on flavor ($p$<0.05). Housewives under 39 years were interested in manufacture date, nutrient content, and food price, in decreasing order, whereas housewives between 40~49 years and over 50 years were interested in manufacture date, food prices, and nutrient content. Older housewives were interested in brown rice and fruits, whereas younger housewives under 39 years were interested in meat, fish, eggs, fried foods, and fast food. Older housewives over 50 years did not consume fried foods more than two times per week and consumed three regular meals more often than younger housewives. Accordingly, for younger housewives, it is necessary that healthy foods be cooked for their families.

  • The average temperatures for year and winter season have been risen by $0.7{\circ}C$ and $1.4{\circ}C$, respectively, during the last 30 years. Recently abnormal climate phenomena occurred frequently results in severe loss of vegetable crops grown in Korea. Specially, Chinese cabbages grown in the southern area of Korea are often significantly affected by sudden cold waves during winter season before harvest. This experiment was conducted to find out a potential role of covering materials on the protection of frost damage of 'Bularm' chinese cabbage in the winter season. The lowest temperature was $-15.8^{\circ}C$ in non-covering, $-8.1^{\circ}C$ in the PE film covering and $-4.6^{\circ}C$ in the non-woven fabric covering with PE film, respectively. The cumulative times below $4.0^{\circ}C$ were 145.5 hours for the non-covering treatment, 94 hours in the PE film covering and 14.5 hours in the non-woven fabric covering with PE film, respectively. The symptoms of frost damage were severe at non-covering chinese cabbages compared to polyethylene film (PE) non-woven fabric with PE covering ones. Microscopic studies showed the normal anatomical structure of palisade and spongy tissue of cabbage leaves covered with non-woven fabric with PE film. Leaf cells, however, were slightly damaged in cabbages covered with PE film alone, and both palisade and spongy cells were were completely collapsed in uncovered cabbages. The result of this study suggests that chinese cabbages is required to be covered with non-woven fabric with PE film to minimize the frost damage by sudden cold wave below $-7^{\circ}C$.
