  • This paper introduces a simple core loss calculation method for output filter inductor in pulse width modulation (PWM) DC-AC inverter. Amorphous C-core (AMCC-320) is used to analyze the core loss. In order to measure core loss of the output filter inductor and validate the proposed method, a single-phase half-bridge inverter and a calorimeter are used. By changing switching frequency and modulation index (MI) of the inverter, core loss of the AMCC-320 is measured with the lab-made calorimeter and the results are compared with calculated core loss. The proposed method can be easily extended to other core loss calculation of various converters.

  • Strength is not simply a single given value but rather is a statistical one with certain distribution functions. This is because it is affected by many unknown factors such as size, shape, stress distribution, and combined stresses. In this study, a model of loss probability is proposed in view of the fact that one of the fundamental configuration of nature is hexagonal, for example, the shapes of lattice unit, grain, and so on. The model sues the concept of loss of certain element in place of Jayatilaka-Trustrum's length and angle of cracks. Using this model, the loss probability due to each loss of certain elements is obtained. Then, the maximum principal stress is calculated by the finite element method at the centroid of the elements under the tensile load for the 4,095 models of analysis. Finally, the failure probability of the brittle materials is obtained by multiplying the loss probability by the ratio of the maximum principal stress to theoretical tensile strength. Comparison of the result of the Jayatilaka-Trustrum's model and the proposed model shows that the failure probabilities by the two methods are in good agreement. Further, it is shown that the parametric relationship of semi-crack lengths for various degrees of birittleness can be determined. Therefore, the analysis of the failure probability suing the proposed model is shown to be promising as a new method for the study of the failure probability of birttle materials.

  • There are two types of packet loss probabilities used in both the network layer and the physical layer within the wireless transmitter such as a queueing discard probability and transmission loss probability. We analyze these loss performances in order to guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) which is the basic of the future network. The queuing loss probability is caused by a maximum allowable delay time and the transmission loss probability is caused by a wireless channel error. These two types of packet loss probabilities are not easily analyzed due to recursive feedback which, originates as a result at a queueing delay and a number of retransmission attempts. We consider a wireless transmitter to a M/D/1 queueing model. We configurate the model to have a finite-size FIFO buffer in order to analyze the real-time traffic streams. Then we present the approaches used for evaluating the loss probabilities of this M/D/1/K queueing model. To analyze the two types of probabilities which have mutual feedbacks with each other, we drive the solutions recursively. The validity and accuracy of the analysis are confirmed by the computer simulation. From the following solutions, we suggest a minimum of 'a Maximum Allowable Delay Time' for real-time traffic in order to initially guarantee the QoS. Finally, we analyze the required service rate for each type utilizing real-time traffic and we apply our valuable analysis to a N-user's wireless network in order to get the fundamental information (types of supportable real-type traffics, types of supportable QoS, supportable maximum number of users) for network design.

  • This paper deals with eddy current loss of magnetic coupling with radial permanent magnet (PM) using analytical method such as a space harmonic method. Superposition of two kinds analysis model is used to analyze eddy current loss induced in inner PM and outer PM of magnetic coupling. When the eddy current is induced, the environmental temperature increases, and the permanent magnet(PM) characteristics are degraded because the performance of PM is greatly influenced by temperature rise. Hence, the calculation of eddy current loss becomes an important factor in the magnetic coupling. In order to analyze eddy current loss, first, on the basis of the magnetic vector potential and two-dimensional(2-D) polar-coordinate system, the magnetic field solutions of the radial magnetized PM are obtained. And we obtain the analytical solutions for the eddy current density produced by permanent magnet. Lastly, analytical solutions for eddy current loss are derived by using equivalent, electrical resistance calculated from magnet volume and analytical solution for eddy current density. This analytical results are validated by comparing with the 2-D finite element analysis (FEA).

  • This study accomplished to draw a soil erosion map and a grade map of soil loss hazard in Korea. RUSLE and Rainfall-runoff (R) factor, which was estimated by using the rainfall data observed in 59 meteorological stations from 1977 to 2006 (for 30 years). FARD was used to analyze the frequency, and the whole country R factor was estimated according to the frequency. In the analysis of estimating the whole country R factor, Nakdong river has the smallest vaule, but Han river has the biggest value. According to the result of analyzing soil loss, soil loss occurred in a grass land, a bare land and a field in size order, and also approximately 17.2 ton/ha soil loss happened on the whole area. The average soil loss amount by the unit area takes place in a bare land and a grass land a lot. The total amount of soil loss in 5-year-frequency rainfall yields 15,000 ton and, what is more, a lot of soil loss happens in a paddy field, a forest and a crop field. The grade map of soil loss hazard is drawn up by classifying soil loss hazard grade by 5. As a result of analyzing soil loss, the moderate area which is the soil loss hazard grade 2 takes up the largest part, 72.8% of the total soil loss hazard area, on the contrary, the severe soil loss hazard area takes up only $1,038km^2$ (1.1%) of the whole area. The severe soil loss hazard area by land cover shows $93.5km^2$ in a bare land, $168.1km^2$ in a grass land and $327.4km^2$ in a crop field respectively.

  • This paper describes energy loss in a pipe line of refuse collecting system. Analysis of energy loss in a pipe line is the decisive factor in a design of refuse collecting system. Using the results of energy loss analysis, we can determine the power of turbo-blower. The flow characteristics of the pipe line with refuse bags were analyzed by three-dimensional CFD. The refuse bag is modeled by using the shape obtained from profile measurement. Friction factors were calculated with changing the refuse bag size, mixing ratio and Reynolds number. And drag coefficients were calculated using the CFD results. From the results we can calculate energy loss in a pipe line of refuse collecting system and predict the capacity of turbo-blower.

  • In this paper, 110kW high output density, high efficiency Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor which can be applied on tram’s traction system is introduced, along with its output and loss characteristics. The motor model is 2pole 18slot model and its size has been reduced through the high speed for high output density. Especially, structure and retainer sleeve structure is applied to its structure, which is also appropriate for high speed rotation. This kind of structure has eddy current loss problem on the surface of rotor, which must be reduced for high output density design. This study has designed the most optimized additional design parameter in order to improve the output characteristics and efficiency of previous produced 2pole 18 slot 110kW motor model and how the width of airgap affects from the loss perspective is mainly analyzed. Finally, the analysis on the extent of the efficiency improvement effect compared to the previous model has performed through electromagnetic FEM analysis. The influence of airgap flux density distribution has also been thoroughly examined.

  • In this paper, the friction characteristic of engine bearings has been analyzed in terms of a friction loss power, a minimum film thickness and an oil film pressure. This analysis has been focused on the fuel economy improvement with a low viscosity engine oil such as SAE 0W-40, which is used for a friction loss reduction and increased for a Diesel fuel economy. The friction loss power, the minimum oil film thickness and oil film pressure distribution for plain bearings of a Diesel engine are analyzed using an AVL's EXCITE program with a conventional engine oils of SAE 5W-40 and 10W-40, and a low viscosity engine oil of SAE 0W-40. The computed results indicate that a viscosity of engine oils is closely related to the friction loss power and the decreased minimum film thickness in which is a key parameter of a load carrying capacity of an oil film pressure distribution. When the low viscosity engine oil is supplied to engine bearings, it does not affect to the formation of a minimum oil film thickness. But the friction loss power has been significantly affected by low viscosity engine oil at a low operating temperature of 0. Based on the FEM computed results, the low viscosity engine oil at a low temperature range will be an important factor for an improvement of the fuel economy improvement.

  • AC loss is one of the main research area in AC power application using high temperature superconductor(HTS), such as HTS transformer, HTS current limiter and HTS cable, because it is closely related to efficiency, economic estimation and design of power device. A lot of research for various arrangements of HTS tapes have been performed to increase a capacity of transport current because single HTS tape can not satisfy the demanded current capacity in HTS power application. In this paper, we studied magnetization loss by different several arrangements of BSCCO tapes such as Edge-to-Edge type, Face-to-Face type and Matrix type through numerical analysis by 2D-FEM and measurement. As a result, we got the result that the magnetization loss of Face-to-Face type arrangements was lower than those of other arrangement types under the conditions of the same stacking number. We think that the result was due to shield effect by demagnetization of adjacent HTS tapes which are located face to face.

  • Mechanical gears driven by direct contact have problems including noise, vibration and heat. In order to, solve these problems, magnetic gears having a non-contact magnetic coupling have been proposed. Through various studies on magnetic gears, we found that losses are changed when the number of magnetic poles varies in the same gear ratio. For this reason, research team expect the iron loss of the magnetic gear and the Eddy current loss of the permanent magnet will have a certain tendency depending on the number of poles. This paper identified the magnetic gear's loss tendency according to the number of poles, and laid the basis for efficiency improvement design.
