  • This paper studies on the feedback linearization of the looper system for hot strip mills, where the looper system plays an important role in regulating the strip tension. Firstly, nonlinear dynamic equations of the looper system are simply introduced. Secondly, using the static feedback linearization algorithm, a linear model of the looper system is obtained, of which usefulness is validated from comparison between the linear model and the nonlinear model, and design of LQI(Linear Ouadratic Integral optimal control) and ILQ (Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) looper control systems.   • This paper studies on the design of an ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) looper control system for hot strip mills. The looper which is placed between each stand plays an important role in controlling strip width by regulating strip tension variation generated from the velocity difference of main work rolls. The mathematical model for looper is firstly obtained by Taylor's linearization of nonlinear differential equations, where it is given as a linear and time invariant state-space equation. Secondly, a looper servo controller is designed by ILQ control algorithm, which is an inverse problem of LQ(Linear Quadratic optimal control) control. By tunning control gain arbitration parameters and time constants, it is shown that the ILQ looper servo controller has the performance that makes well to follow desired trajectories of both strip tension and looper angle.

  • We describe the looper controller design for a hot strip mill. The looper is to control the strip tension which influences on the width of the strip. It is very important to control the looper control of the hot strip mill, but difficult to control the looper, because there exists mutual interaction among strip gauge, looper angle, and strip tension. In this paper, we present the modeling for the looper of a hot strip mill to control the tension of the strip and suggest a eigenstructure assignment method. The eigenstructure assignment is useful tool that allows the designer to satisfy damping, settling time, and mode decoupling specifications directly by choosing eigenvalue and eigenvectors. Desired eigenvalue and eigenvector are chosen to satisfy the desired responses.

  • The hot rolling process ranks the highest position for production in steel making process. The hot strip manufacturing processes consist of the reheating furnace, roughing and finishing mill and coiler. The reheating furnace heats the slab. The roughing and finishing mill produce the hot strip from slab. The hot strip quality mainly depends on finishing mill, which consists of 4-high 7 stands. The looper is installed between stands and is used for controlling the strip tension by the looper angle for better material flow. It is difficult to control the strip tension with the coupled looper system from interaction between the looper angle and strip tension. Too much deviation of strip tension severely affects the poor width quality of the hot strip. It is important to control simultaneously both the looper angle and strip tension with each of their target values. This paper proposes the fuzzy tension control, which is developed to minimize the width deviation of the hot strip by maintaining the proper strip tension between stands and to achieve the stable operation of the coupled looper system. The fuzzy tension control performance is compared with the conventional PID control by experimental results.

  • A high precision hot strip width control method has been developed in this study by applying interstand looper tension measuring system at finishing mill stands. As with deviation of hot rolled steel strip is closely related to abnormal increase in the interstand strip tension, on-line measuring device of looped tension and data analyzing system was developed in this study. To determine dominant factors that will cause local width shortage, the logged data sets of bar width, bar thickness, looper tension, and strip thickness along the strip length were correlated with the data set of strip width change. With the result of the correlation analysis, existing sequence control logic and parameters for looper actuator were modified for strip width quality and the gains of the looper control were refined for the stable operation during the full passage of rolled strip. The on-line tension measurement and tension feedback control for looper system improved strip travelling stability and reduced strip width deviation in the srip top end region.

  • In this paper, a new looper controller is proposed to minimize the tension variation of a strip in the hot strip finishing mill. The proposed control technology is based on a receding horizon control (RHC) to satisfy the constraints on the control input/state variables. The finite terminal weighting matrix is used instead of the terminal equality constraint. The closed loop stability of the RHC for the looper system is analyzed to guarantee the monotonicity of the optimal cost. Furthermore, the RHC is combined with a 4SID(Subspace-based State Space System Identification) model identifier to improve the robustness for the parameter variation and the disturbance of an actuator. As a result, it is shown through a computer simulation that the proposed control scheme satisfies the given constraints on the control inputs and states: roll speed, looper current, unit tension, and looper angle. The control scheme also diminishes the tension variation for the parameter variation and the disturbance as well.

There are many control schemes such as conventional, non-interactive, LQ(Linear Quadratic), Hinf and ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic), Adaptive(gain scheduling) control in the looper control system. In this paper, we present the modeling for the looper of a hot strip finishing mill to control the tension of the strip and suggest another control method.

  • This paper studies on the design of a looper control system for hot strip mill finisher using ILQ(Inverse Linear Quadratic optimal control) control method. The loopers are placed between each rolling stands and looper control plays an important role in regulating strip tension. The strip tension is controlled by raising and lowering the looper and by changing the speed of main work rolls. Firstly, it is shown from a nonlinear dynamic simulation that the strip tension is more influenced by difference of rolling speed than that of the looper angle. Secondly, a servo controller of the looper is designed using ILQ control method of which the characteristics and algorithms are simply introduced. Finally, the performances of the ILQ servo controller are compared with those of the LQI servo controller from computer simulation. In result, it is shown that the proposed ILQ servo controller has the better performances and robustness far parameter perturbations and disturbances than those of LQI controller.
