  • Elastic wave velocity measurement technique such as impact-echo method and ultrasonic pulse velocity method has been successfully used to evaluate the moduli and strength of concrete. However, estimation results obtained by the NDT methods do not agree well with real things because longitudinal wave velocity is influenced by various factors. In this paper, among several factors influencing P-wave velocity, the influence of moisture content in concrete was investigated through the experiment. Test results show that longitudinal wave velocity is significantly affected by the moisture content of concrete, i.e., the lower moisture content. the lower velocity. Moisture content influences rod-wave velocity measured by impact-echo method stronger than ultrasonic pulse velocity measured by transmission method. During drying process with ages. the difference of increasing rate between longitudinal wave velocity and compressive strength of concrete is gradually increased. Therefore, to establish more accurate relationship between longitudinal wave velocity and strength, the difference of the increasing rate should be considered.

  • Ultrasonic metal welding has been widely used for joining lithium-ion battery tabs. Weld quality monitoring has been an important issue in lithium-ion battery manufacturing. This study focuses on the weld quality monitoring in ultrasonic metal welding with the longitudinal-torsional vibration mode horn developed newly. As the quality of ultrasonic welding depends on welding parameters like pressure, time, and amplitude, the suitable values of these parameters were selected for experimentation. The welds were tested via tensile testing machine and weld strengths were investigated. The dataset collected for performance test was used to train the multi-layer perceptron neural network. The three layer neural network was used for the study and the optimum number of neurons in the first and second hidden layers were selected based on performances of each models. The best models were selected for the horn and then tested to see their performances on an unseen dataset. The neural network models for the longitudinal-torsional mode horn attained test accuracy of 90%. This result implies that proposed models has potential for the weld quality monitoring.

  • In this paper, the windmill type ultrasonic motors with 11.35 mm diameter, 2.87 mm thickness of metal endcap and 1.47 g weight were fabricated. Effects of slots and thickness on torque characteristic in the windmill type ultrasonic motor were investigated, when stator's slots were changed from 4, 6, 8 and thickness 0.15 mm, respectively. Specially designed metal endcaps with windmill shaped cutting can provide longitudinal and torsional displacements simultaneously as the ceramic disk vibrates radically. The windmill type ultrasonic motor has only three components: a stator element with windmill shape slotted metal endcap, a rotor and bearing. Ultrasonic motor stimulated to ultrasonic oscillations by piezoelectrics to drive a rotor via friction contact. The ultrasonic motor fabricated here was the windmill type ultrasonic motor operated by single-phase AC source. Bidirectional revolution using single-phase high frequency for driving the ultrasonic motor was presented.

  • An ultrasonic linear motor using lambda shape vibrators has been designed and fabricated. The multiway ultrasonic motors mainly consist of an lambda shape ultrasonic vibrator which generates elliptical motions in beat. The lambda shape ultrasonic linear motor use longitudinal and bending vibration mode. In order to high precision motion control and multiway moving, piezoceramics were adhered to lambda shape brass elastic material. The finite element method was used to optimize dimension of ultrasonic vibrator and direction of vibratory displacement. As a result of estimating the characteristics of the ultrasonic linear motor, The results have shown that the lambda shape ultrasonic linear motor can be moved multiwav by using the phase control. Close agreement between the FEM results and experimental results obtained for the lambda shape ultrasonic linear motor.

  • Direct removal of beak-type ossification of posterior longitudinal ligament at thoracic spine (T-OPLL) is a challenging surgical technique due to the potential risk of neural injury. Slipping off the cutting surface of a high-speed drill may result in entrapment in neural structures, leading to serious complications. Removal of T-OPLL with an ultrasonic osteotome, utilizing back and forth micro-motion of a blade rather than rotatory-motion of drill, may reduce such complications. We have applied the ultrasonic osteotome for posterior circumferential decompression of T-OPLL for three consecutive patients with beak-type OPLL and have described the surgical techniques and patient outcomes. The preoperative chief complaint was gait disturbance in all patients. Japanese orthopedic association scores (JOA) was used for functional assessment. Scores measured 2/11, 5/11, 2/11, and 4/11 for each patient. The ventral T-OPLL mass was exposed after posterior midline approach, laminotomy and transeversectomy. The T-OPLL mass was directly removed with an ultrasonic osteotome and instrumented segmental fixation was performed. The surgeries were uneventful. Detailed surgical techniques were presented. Gait disturbance was improved in all patients. Dural tear occurred in one patient without squeal. Postoperative JOA was 6/11, 10/11, 8/11, and 8/11 (recovery rate; 44%, 83%, 67%, and 43%) respectively at 18, 18, 10, and 1 months postoperative. T-OPLL was completely removed in all patients as confirmed with computed tomography scan. We hope that surgical difficulties in direct removal of T-OPLL might be reduced by utilizing ultrasonic osteotome.

  • This study investigates the mechanism of a dual mode probe that generates both of the longitudinal and shear waves simultaneously with a single FZT element. Most of conventional ultrasonic probes are constructed to generate either longitudinal or shear waves. After poling, PZT has the hexagonal 6mm crystal symmetry. All possible crystal cuts are checked to determine appropriate Euler transformation angles for efficient excitation of dual modes. For the selected cut, performance of the dual mode element is analyzed through numerical simulation and experiments. Results of the analysis determine the optimal crystal cut for simultaneous generation of P and S waves of equal strength.

  • This paper is a study on a linear ultrasonic motor with a first longitudinal$(L_1)$ and fourth bending $(B_4)$ double-mode rectangular plate. The stator vibrator is composed of an elastic material plate and of a piezo-ceramic element having a motion by electrical excitation. Each strain vector differs by $90^{\circ}$ generate travelling wave with the elliptical displacement motion of a point on the surface. To magnify displacement of longitudinal direction in elliptical displacement motion, the motor has a mechanism of the.displacement enlargement. In this paper, the vibration shape of the stator is simulated using the finite element method. A detailed model considered of the piezoelectric effect and of the exact geometry of the stator is used to calculate the displacement. The position of displacement mechanism is decided by the maximum displacement.

  • Various types of ultrasonic techniques have been used for the estimation of compressive strength of concrete structures. However, conventional ultrasonic velocity method using only longitudial wave cannot be determined the compressive strength of concrete structures with accuracy. In this paper, by using the introduction of multiple parameter, e. g. velocity of shear wave, velocity of longitudinal wave, attenuation coefficient of shear wave, attenuation coefficient of longitudinal wave, combination condition, age and preservation method, multiple regression analysis method was applied to the determination of compressive strength of concrete structures. The experimental results show that velocity of shear wave can be estimated compressive strength of concrete with more accuracy compared with the velocity of longitudinal wave, accuracy of estimated error range of compressive strength of concrete structures can be enhanced within the range of ${\pm}$10% approximately.

  • Poisson's ratio is one of elastic constants of elastic solids. However, it has not attracted attention due to its narrow range and difficult measurement. Transverse wave velocity as well as longitudinal wave velocity should be measured for nondestructive measurement of Poisson's ratio. Hard couplant for transverse wave prevents transducer from scanning over specimen. In the present work, a novel measurement of Poisson's ratio distribution was proposed. Immersion method was employed for the scanning over the specimen. Echo signals of normal beam longitudinal wave were collected. Transverse wave modes generated by mode conversion were identified. From transit time of longitudinal and transverse waves, Poisson's ratio can be determined without information of specimen thickness. This technique was demonstrated for aluminum and steel specimens.
