BACKGROUND: Current guidelines indicate electrical dyssynchrony as the major criteria for selecting patients for cardiac resynchronization therapy, and 25-35% of patients exhibit unfavorable responses to cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). We aimed to evaluate different cardiac mechanical dyssynchrony parameters in heart failure patients using current echo-Doppler modalities and we analyzed their association with electrical dyssynchrony. METHODS: The study included 120 heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) who underwent assessments for left ventricular mechanical dyssynchrony (LVMD) and interventricular mechanical dyssynchrony (IVMD). RESULTS: Patients were classified according to QRS duration: group I with QRS < 120 ms, group II with QRS 120-149 ms, and group III with QRS ≥ 150 ms. Group III had significantly higher IVMD, LVMD indices, TS-SD speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE) 12 segments (standard deviation of time to peak longitudinal strain speckle tracking echocardiography in 12 LV-segments), and LVMD score compared with group I and group II. Group II and group III were classified according to QRS morphology into left bundle branch block (LBBB) and non-LBBB subgroups. LVMD score, TS-SD 12 TDI, and TS-SD 12 STE had good correlations with QRS duration. CONCLUSIONS: HFrEF patients with wide QRS duration (> 150 ms) had more evident LVMD compared with patients with narrow or intermediate QRS. Those patients with intermediate QRS duration (120-150 ms) had substantial LVMD assessed by both TDI and 2D STE, regardless of QRS morphology. Subsequently, we suggest that LVMD indices might be employed as additive criteria to predict CRT response in that patient subgroup. Electrical and mechanical dyssynchrony were strongly correlated in HFrEF patients.

In 1980 and 1990's most of residential buildings were constructed with relatively low strength concrete of 18 MPa. And, columns were designed considering only vertical loads. In this study, compressive strength tests for low strength RC columns retrofitted by carbon fiber sheets were carried out. Carbon fiber sheet provides constructability and high tensile strength as well as good corrosion resistance characteristics. A pair of carbon sheets were wrapped with ${\pm}60^{\circ}$ angle with respect to longitudinal direction of RC column to increase structural capacity against axial and lateral load simultaneously. Strength and strain patterns and failure modes of specimens were analyzed and prediction equation of increased compressive strength of RC column confined by carbon fiber sheet was proposed based on regression analysis.

Considerable advance has been made on research on effect of steel pipe Umbrella Arch Method (UAM) and mechanical reinforcement mechanism through numerical analyses and experiments. Due to long analysis time of three-dimensional analysis and its complexity, un-quantitative two-dimensional analysis is dominantly used in the design and application, where equivalent material properties of UAM reinforced area and ground are used, For this reason, development of reasonable, theoretical, quantitative and easy to use design and analysis method is required. In this study, both field UAM tests and laboratory tests were performed in the residual soil to highly weathered rock; field tests to observe the range of reinforcement, and laboratory tests to investigate the change of material properties between prior to and after UAM reinforcement. It has been observed that the increase in material property of neighboring ground is negligible, and that only stiffness of steel pipe and cement column formed inside the steel pipe and the gap between steel pipe and borehole contributes to ground reinforcement. Based on these results and concept of Convergence Confinement Method (CCM), two dimensional axisymmetric analyses have been performed to obtain the longitudinal displacement profile (LDP) corresponding to arching effect of tunnel face, UAM effect and effect of supports. In addition, modified load distribution method in two dimensional plane-strain analysis has been suggested, in which effect of UAM is transformed to internal pressure and modified load distribution ratios are suggested. Comparison between the modified method and conventional method shows that larger displacement occur in the conventional method than that in the modified method although it may be different depending on ground condition, depth and size of tunnel, types of steel pipe and initial stress state. Consequently, it can be concluded that the effect of UAM as a beam in a longitudinal direction is not considered properly in the conventional method.

This study was executed to decide the physiological characteristics of Ferule mushroom. Four strains of Ferule mushroom were tested to select a superior strain in its mycelial growth. The pertinent substrates, temperature and pH ranges for the growth of selected strain were determined. And then, the wood rotting ability and type of the Ferule mushroom were determined. The superior strain F-2 among four strains was selected, on the basis of its vegetative mycelial growth and density on agar media. Mycelial growth of F-2 was the best on MYPA among other tested synthetic or semi-synthetic media. The temperature range for pertinent mycelial growth was about $25{\sim}34^{\circ}C$ and best at $30^{\circ}C$. The optimum pH range on MYPA was 5.0~6.0. The mycelial growth was mostly stimulated by soluble starch at cont. 1% (w/w) and secondly, maltose among several carabon sources and by mixed solution of YE(0.25%) and ME(0.25%) but not by ME alone. Cell thining and erosion of Pinus rigida wood by the mycelia of Ferule mushroom were found only on a few cell but largely at wood block test, indicating that the softwood rotting ability of Ferule mushroom mycelia was not so good. The result of polarized light microscopy appeared that cellulose of some tracheides showing the S3 layer lost brifringence was degraded by Ferule mushroom. But only part of cellulose of P. rigida wood was degraded by Ferule mushroom, because most of wood cells continued to showing briefingence. A largely degraded ray parenchyma and longitudinal parenchyma cell and partly thinning and erosion of hardwood(Quercus serrata) cell was found and it indicates that the rotting ability of Ferule mushroom mycelia on hardwood was higher than on softwood. It could be concluded that the difference in the wood rot by Ferule mushroom between the hardwood and softwood was made by the difference of chemical constitutions between them, especially in the contents and the types of lignin. Ferule mushroom was considered as white rotter as a result of bavendam test, although more research should be required.

Structural behavior of built-up compression members with unsymmetric connectors under buckling status has been studied through these experiments. When the distance between adjacent H-300 beams of built-up compression member is 2 m in length, and the H-300 beams are lengthened up to 30 m in length with three-10 m-H-beams by bolts and double arrayed, three specimen having each connector interval 4 m, 5 m, 6 m are experimented for evaluating buckling loads. The buckling loads from the experiments are compared with buckling loads of structural analysis using FEM and buckling loads of Timoshenko Eq. loads in order to figure out how the connectors' interval affects on longitudinal and lateral displacements, also strain of the built-up compression members as well. The result shows that the buckling loads tend to sharply decrease non-linearly according to connectors' interval increases. As well as that, the differences between experimental buckling loads and theoretical buckling loads and between experimental buckling loads and structural analyses buckling loads also have a tendency to be increased as the connector interval increases.
This paper presents the flexural behavior and strengthening effect of reinforced concrete beams bonded with carbon FRP plate. Parameters involved in this experimental study were plate bond length and sheet web anchorage length. Test beams were strengthened with FRP plate on the soffit and anchored with FRP sheet on the web. In general, strengthened beams with no web anchorage were failed by concrete cover failure along the longitudinal reinforcement. On the other hand, strengthened beams with web anchorage were finally failed by delamination shear failure within concrete after breaking of CFRP sheet wrapping around web. The ultimate load and deflection of strengthened beams increased with an increased bond length of FRP plate. Also, the ultimate load and deflection increased with an increased anchorage length of FRP sheet. Particularly, the strengthened beams with web anchorage maintained high ultimate load resisting capacity until very large deflection. The shape of strain distribution of CFRP plate along beam was very similar to that of bending moment diagram. Therefore, an assumption of constant shear stress in shear span could be possible in the analysis of delamination shear stress of concrete. In the case of full bond length, the ultimate resisting shear stress provided by concrete and FRP sheet Increased with an increase of web anchorage length. In the resisting shear force, a portion of the shear force was provided by FRP anchorage sheet.

The flexural behavior tests of UHPC segmental Box girder which has 160MPa compressive strength and 15.4m length were carried out. The test variables are area of prestressing wires, volume fraction of steel fibers and longitudinal reinforcing bars in upper flange and web. PS tendons which has 32 strands of 15.2mm diameter in lower flange, 24 strands and 14 strands in lower flange were arranged and volume fraction of 2%, 1.5% and 1.0% is used in box girder concrete. UHPFRC box girder which has 32 strands in lower flange showed the over reinforcement and brittle behavior. UHPFRC box girder which has 24 strands showed the similar peak load as 32 strands girder and ductile behavior as large deflection. UHPFRC box girder which has 14 strands showed half of the peak load of 24 strands box girder and ductile behavior. After the application of the formular for the reinforcement index to the behavior of the UHPFRC box girders, reinforcement index does not determine the characteristic of behavior of UHPFRC box girder exactly. So the index should consider the dimension precisely and modify the reference value corresponding to the 0.005 strain of the prestressing strands.

The use of high-strength aluminum alloys for ships and of shore structures has many benefits compared to carbon steels. Recently, high-strength aluminum alloys have been widely used in onshore and of shore industries, and they are widely used for the side shell structures of special-purpose ships. Their use in box girders of bridge structures and in the topside of fixed platforms is also becoming more widespread. Use of aluminum material can reduce fuel consumption by reducing the weight of the composite material through a weight composition ratio of 1/3 compared to carbon steel. The characteristics of the stress strain relationship of an aluminum structure are quite different from those of a steel structure, because of the influence of the welding[process heat affected zone (HAZ). The HAZ of aluminum is much wider than that of steel owing to its higher heat conductivity. In this study, by considering the HAZ generated by metal insert gas (MIG) welding, the buckling and final strength characteristics of an aluminum reinforcing plate against longitudinal compression loads were analyzed. MIG welding reduces both the buckling and ultimate strength, and the energy dissipation rate after initial yielding is high in the range of the HAZ being 15 mm, and then the difference is small when HAZ being 25 mm or more. Therefore, it is important to review and analyze the influence of the HAZ to estimate the structural behavior of the stiffened plate to which the aluminum alloy material is applied.
A theoretical research project is undertaken to develop integrated analysis and design tools for long span composite beams in modern high-rise buildings, and it aims to develop non-linear finite element models for practical design of composite beams. As the first paper in the series, this paper presents the development study as well as the calibration exercise of the proposed finite element models for simply supported composite beams. Other practical issues such as continuous composite beams, the provision of web openings for passage of building services, the partial continuity offered by the connections to columns as well as the behaviour of both unprotected and protected composite beams under fires will be reported separately. In this paper, details of the finite elements and the material models for both steel and reinforced concrete are first described, and finite element studies of composite beams with full details of test data are then presented. It should be noted that in the proposed finite element models, both steel beams and concrete slabs are modelled with two dimensional plane stress elements whose widths are assigned to be equal to the widths of concrete flanges, and the flange widths and the web thicknesses of steel beams as appropriate. Moreover, each shear connector is modelled with one horizontal spring and one vertical spring to simulate its longitudinal shear and pull-out actions based on measured load-slippage curves of push-out tests of shear connectors. The numerical results are then carefully analyzed and compared with the corresponding test results in terms of load mid-span deflection curves as well as load end-slippage curves. Other deformation characteristics of the composite beams such as stress and strain distributions across the composite cross-sections as well as distributions of shear forces and slippages in shear connectors along the beam spans are also examined in details. It is shown that the numerical results of the composite beams compare well with the test data in terms of various load-deformation characteristics along the entire deformation ranges. Hence, the proposed analysis and design tools are considered to be simple and yet effective for composite beams with practical geometrical dimensions and arrangements. Structural engineers are strongly encouraged to employ the models in their practical work to exploit the full advantages offered by composite construction.

A finite element method is used to simulate interaction of laser-based ultrasounds with surface breaking tracks in elastic media. The laser line source focused on the surface of semi-infinite medium is modeled as a shear dipole in 2-D plane strain finite elements. The shear dipole-finite clement model is found to give correct directivity patterns for generated longitudinal and shear waves. The interaction of surface waves with surface breaking cracks (2-D machined slot) is considered in two ways. Both the source and receiver are fixed with respect to the cracks in the first case, while the source is moving in another case. It is shown that the crack depth tested in the range of 0.3-5.0mm $({\lambda}_R/d=0.21{\sim}3.45)$ can be measured using the corner reflected waves produced by the fixed laser source. The moving laser source is found to cause a large amplitude change of reflected waves near crack, and the crack whose depth is one order lower than the wavelength ran be detected from this change.
