Suspension bridges bear large eccentric live loads in rush hours when most vehicles travel in one direction on the left or right side of the bridge. With the increasing number and weight of vehicles and the girder widening, the eccentric live load effect on the bridge behavior, including bending and distortion of the main girder, gets more pronounced, even jeopardizing bridge safety. This study proposes an analytical algorithm based on multi-catenary theory for predicting the suspension bridge responses to eccentric live load via the nonlinear generalized reduced gradient method. A set of governing equations is derived to solve the following unknown values: the girder rigid-body displacement in the longitudinal direction; the horizontal projection lengths of main cable's segments; the parameters of catenary equations and horizontal forces of the side span cable segments and the leftmost segments of middle span cables; the suspender tensions and the bearing reactions. Then girder's responses, including rigid-body displacement in the longitudinal direction, deflections, and torsion angles; suspenders' responses, including the suspender tensions and the hanging point displacements; main cables' responses, including the horizontal forces of each segment; and the longitudinal displacement of the pylons' tower top under eccentric load can be calculated. The response of an exemplar suspension bridge with three spans of 168, 548, and 168 m is calculated by the proposed analytical method and the finite element method in two eccentric live load cases, and their results prove the former's feasibility. The nonuniform distribution of the live load in the lateral direction is shown to impose a greater threat to suspension bridge safety than that in the longitudinal direction, while some other specific features revealed by the proposed method are discussed in detail.
In this paper, when stress waves are propagated along the reinforced direction of the composite, the characteristic equation of Rayleigh wave is derived. The relationships between velocities of stress waves and Rayleigh wave are studied for anisotropic ratios(E(sub)11/E(sub)12 or E(sub)22/E(sub)11). The increments of anisotropic ratios is made by using known material properties and being constant of basic properties. When the anisotropic ratios are increased, Rayleigh wave velocities to the shear wave velocities are almost equal to 1 with any anisotropic ratios. Rayleigh wave velocities to the longitudinal wave velocities and Shear wave velocities ratio to the longitudinal wave velocities are almost identical each other, they are between 0.12 and 0.21. When the anisotropic ration is very high, that is, E(sub)11/E(sub)22=46.88, Rayleigh wave velocities and the shear wave velocities are almost constant with Poissons ratio, longitudinal wave velocities are very slowly increased with the increments of Poissons ratios. When E(sub)11(elastic modulus of the reinforced direction)and ν(sub)12 are constant, Rayleigh wave velocities and the shear wave velocities are steeply decreased with the increments of anisotropic ratios and the velocities of longitudinal wave are almost constant with them. When E(sub)22(elastic modulus of the normal direction to the fiber) and ν(sub)12 are constant, Rayeigh wave velocities is slowly increased with the increments of anisotropic ratios, the shear wave velocities are almost constant with them, the longitudinal wave velocities are steeply increased with them.
A study was carried out to observe the 1% aqueous safranine solution flow speed in longitudinal and radial directions of softwood G. biloba, ring-porous wood A. altissima, and diffuse- porouswood D. kaki. In radial direction, ray cells and in longitudinal direction tracheids, vessel and wood fiber were considered for the measurement of liquid penetration speed at less than 12% moisture contents (MC). The length, lumen diameter, pit diameter, end wall pit diameter and the numbers of end wall pits determined for the flow rate. The liquid flow in the those cells was captured via video and the capillary flow rate in the ones were measured. Vessel in hardwood species and tracheids in softwood was found to facilitate prime role in longitudinal penetration. Radial flow speed was found highest in ray parenchyma of G. biloba. Anatomical features like the length and diameter, end-wall pit numbers of ray parenchyma were found also responsible fluid flow differences. On the other hand, vessel and fiber structure affected the longitudinal flow of liquids. Therefore, the average liquid penetration depth in longitudinal tracheids of G. biloba was found the highest among all cells considered in D. kaki and A. altissima.
In this paper, we have explained electrical characteristics of a step-down Rosen type piezoelectric transformer for AC-adapter. When the electric voltage is applied to the driving piezoelectric vibrator polarized in the longitudinal direction, then output voltage is generated at the generating piezoelectric vibrator polarized in the thickness direction due to the piezoelectric effects. Output voltage and current from a 11-layered and a 13-layered piezoelectric transformer were measured under the various conditions of loads and frequencies. We measured resonant frequency from impedance curve. It was shown from experiments that output voltage has increased and resonant frequency has changed according to various resistor loads. Output current has changed inversely proportional to resistances.
Finite element analysis and experiment were peformed to estimate the fatigue strength for the lap joint of laser weld. To consider quantitatively residual stress which effects on the fatigue strength of the lap joint of laser weld, after three dimensional modeling for the longitudinal and transverse direction, residual stress fields in the weldment were calculated using thermo-elastic-plastic finite element analysis, then the equivalent fatigue stress considering the residual stress was obtained. To ensure reliability of calculated fatigue strength, fatigue tests were performed. The calculated and experimental results showed a good agreement. The fatigue strength considering a residual stress was lower than that of without considering a residual stress in the lap joint of laser welding. The fatigue strength in the transverse direction was higher than that of longitudinal direction.
Periodic longitudinal vibrations of a video and audio tape and the like used for transducing pictures and sounds may be induced by self-excited vibrations which are caused by frictions against the heads and guides, and their eccentricity, noncircularity or irregularity. It is important to analyze the longitudinal vibration of a tape because it causes distortions of a reproduced signal. It is difficult to measure directly the longitudinal vibration. In this paper a method estimating longitudinal vibration using impulse responses in the transverse direction is presented. And, the parameters boundary domain where the transverse and longitudinal vibration can be decoupled is introduced. In the domain where the both vibrations are decoupled, analytic methods using frequency characteristics and transient responses of the transverse vibration, respectively, are presented. The time domain method predicted more exactly the instantaneous phase of the longitudinal vibration than frequency domain method did.
One of the shortcomings of seismic bridge design codes is the lack of clarity in defining the role of different seismic isolation systems with linear or nonlinear behavior in terms of R-factor. For example, based on AASHTO guide specifications for seismic isolation design, R-factor for all substructure elements of isolated bridges should be half of those expressed in the AASHTO standard specifications for highway bridges (i.e., R=3 for single columns and R=5 for multiple column bent) but not less than 1.50. However, no distinction is made between two commonly used types of seismic isolation devices, i.e., elastomeric rubber bearing (ERB) with linear behavior, and lead rubber bearing (LRB) with nonlinear behavior. In this paper, five existing bridges located in Iran with two types of deck-pier connection including ERB and LRB isolators, and two bridge models with monolithic deck-pier connection are developed and their R-factor values are assessed based on the Uang's method. The average R-factors for the bridges with ERB isolators are calculated as 3.89 and 4.91 in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively, which are not in consonance with the AASHTO guide specifications for seismic isolation design (i.e., R=3/2=1.5 for the longitudinal direction and R=5/2=2.5 for the transverse direction). This is a clear indicator that the code-prescribed R-factors are conservative for typical bridges with ERB isolators. Also for the bridges with LRB isolators, the average computed R-factors equal 1.652 and 2.232 in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively, which are in a good agreement with the code-specified R-factor values. Moreover, in the bridges with monolithic deck-pier connection, the average R-factor in the longitudinal direction is obtained as 2.92 which is close to the specified R-factor in the bridge design codes (i.e., 3), and in the transverse direction is obtained as 2.41 which is about half of the corresponding R-factor value in the specifications (i.e., 5).

The solution was penetrated lowest depth in the wood fiber of Fraxinus rhynchophylla. The large vessel of Fraxinus rhynchophylla was found the lowest depth among the vessels. The solutin was penetrated to the wood fiber of Anthocephalus cadamba higher than the one of Fraxinus rhynchophylla.
A study was carried out to observe the 1% aqueous safranine solution flow speed in longitudinal and radial directions of softwood Larix kaempferi (Lamb.)Carriere, diffuse-porous wood Betula davurica Pall.. and ring-porouswood Castanea crenata S.etZ. In radial direction, ray cells and in longitudinal direction, tracheids, vessel and wood fiber were considered for the measurement of liquid penetration speed at less than 12% moisture contents (MC). The solutin was penetrated to the wood fiber of Betula davurica higher than the one of Castanea crenata.
An experiment was conducted to compare the 1% safranine solution flow depth in radial and longitudinal direction of Prunus sargentii. Longitudinal flow of safranine solution was found higher than radial flow. Body ray parenchyma was found more permeable than marginal ray parenchyma and it was about 1.3 times higher. Intercellular space conducted safranine solution more than ray parenchyma. Vessel was found to be the main avenue for liquid conduction in longitudinal direction. Different anatomical features of ray, vessel and fiber affected the penetration depth of safranine solution. Moreover initial penetration depth was found to be high and thereafter decreased gradually.
