Ship structures are subject to severe environmental loads causing appreciable hull girder deflection which in turn affects the piping system attached to the main hull in the form of displacement load. While this load may cause failure in the pipes, loops have been widely adopted as a measure of preventing this failure with the idea that they may lower the stress level in a pipe by absorbing some portion of the displacement load. But as the loops also have some negative effects such as causing extra manufacture cost, deteriorating the function of the pipe and occupying extra space, the number and the dimensions of the loops adopted need to be minimized. This research develops a design formula for pipe loops. The accuracy of the proposed design formula was verified by comparing two results respectively obtained by the proposed formula and MSC/NASTRAN. The paper ends with the sample example showing the efficiency of the proposed formula.

To minimize the weld defect in manufacturing of the welded tube by using $CO_2$ laser, the monitoring of the welding quality and the seam tracking along the butt-joint lengthwise to the tube axis are studied. The longitudinal butt-joint is shaped from $60kgf/mm^2$ grade steel sheet by 2 roll bending method, and welded by the $CO_2$ laser welding system equipped with the seam tracker and plasma sensor. The laser welded tube has the thickness of 1.5mm, diameter of 105.4mm and length of 2000mm. The precise positioning of the laser beam on the butt-joint to be assembled is obtained within $200{\mu}m$ by the laser vision sensor. The artificial defects in the butt-joint are well observed by the signal of plasma intensity measured from the plasma sensor of UV wavelength range within 400nm. The developed $CO_2$ laser tube welding system has the function of the precision seam tracking and the real-time monitoring of the welding quality. In conclusion, the laser welded tube can be used for manufacturing of automobile chassis and components after hydro-forming.

In this paper a new truss modeling technique for describing the beam shear resistance mechanism is proposed based on the reinterpretation of the well-known relationship between shear and the rate of change of bending moment in a reinforced concrete beam subjected to combined shear and moment loads. The core of the model is that a new perspective on the shear resistance can be gained by viewing the internal stress filed in terms of the superposition of two base components of shear resistance; arch action and beam action. The arch action can be described as a simple tied-arch which is consisted of a curved compression chord and a tension tie of the longitudinal steel, while the beam action between the two chords can be modeled as a membrane shearing element with forming a smeared truss action. The compatibility of deformation associated to the two action is taken into account by employing an experimental factor or internal state force factor a. Then the base equation of V=dM/dx is numerically duplicated. The new model was examined by the 362 experimental results. The shear strength predicted by the internal force state factor a show better correlation with the tested values than the present shear design.
In this study, the homogeneity of critical current, $I_c$, along the lengthwise direction in the coated conductor (CC) tape under uniaxial tension was investigated using a multiple voltage tap configuration. Initially, a gradual and homogeneous $I_c$ degradation occurred in all subsections of the tape up to a certain strain value. This was followed by an abrupt $I_c$ degradation in some subsections, which caused scattering in $I_c$ values along the length with increasing tension strain. The $I_c$ degradation behaviour was also explained through n-value as well as microstructure analyses. Subsections showed $I_c$ scattering corresponding to damaged areas of the CC tape revealed that transverse cracks were distributed throughout the gauge length. This homogeneous $I_c$ degradation behaviour under tension is similar with the case under torsion strain but different with the case under hard bending which were previously reported. This behaviour is also different with the case using Bi-2223 HTS tapes under tension strain.
To investigate the effects of central buckles on the dynamic behavior and flutter stability of long-span suspension bridges, four different connection options between the main cable and the girder near the mid-span position of the Aizhai Bridge were studied. Based on the flutter derivatives obtained from wind tunnel tests, formulations of self-excited forces in the time domain were obtained using a nonlinear least square fitting method and a time-domain flutter analysis was realized. Subsequently, the influences of the central buckles on the critical flutter velocity, flutter frequency, and three-dimensional flutter states of the bridge were investigated. The results show that the central buckles can significantly increase the frequency of the longitudinal floating mode of the bridge and have greater influence on the frequencies of the asymmetric lateral bending mode and asymmetric torsion mode than on that of the symmetric ones. As such, the central buckles have small impact on the critical flutter velocity due to that the flutter mode of the Aizhai Bridge was essentially the symmetric torsion mode coupled with the symmetric vertical mode. However, the central buckles have certain impact on the flutter mode and the three-dimensional flutter states of the bridge. In addition, it is found that the phenomenon of complex beat vibrations (called intermittent flutter phenomenon) appeared in the flutter state of the bridge when the structural damping is 0 or very low.

The first part shows the optimal contact surface for T-shaped combined footings to obtain the most economical dimensioning on the soil (optimal area). This paper presents the second part of a new model for T-shaped combined footings, this part shows a the mathematical model for design of such foundations subject to axial load and moments in two directions to each column considering the soil real pressure acting on the contact surface of the footing with one or two property lines restricted, the pressure is presented in terms of an axial load, moment around the axis "X" and moment around the axis "Y" to each column, and the methodology is developed using the principle that the derived of the moment is the shear force. The classic model considers an axial load and a moment around the axis "X" (transverse axis) applied to each column, i.e., the resultant force from the applied loads is located on the axis "Y" (longitudinal axis), and its position must match with the geometric center of the footing, and when the axial load and moments in two directions are presented, the maximum pressure and uniform applied throughout the contact surface of the footing is considered the same. To illustrate the validity of the new model, a numerical example is presented to obtain the design for T-shaped combined footings subjected to an axial load and moments in two directions applied to each column. The mathematical approach suggested in this paper produces results that have a tangible accuracy for all problems.
In order to manufacture a doubly curved sheet metal, the incremental roll forming process which adopts advantages such as the flexibility of the incremental forming process and continuous bending deformation of the roll forming process has been experimentally investigated. An experimental equipment was developed which was named as unit roll set (URS) consisting of two pairs of support rolls and an upper center roll. The upper roll equipped with the servo control unit is motor-driven and can be positioned in the vertical direction according to the user's commands. Four support rolls are idle, and they freely rotate only along the axis so as to transfer the plate more stably in the tangential direction of the rotation of the driving roll. In the process, the plate is deformed incrementally as deformation proceeds simultaneously in longitudinal and transverse directions. Through the experiments using URS, information regarding to forming schedules is found out to fabricate curved hull plates. This study demonstrates the further application of the incremental roll forming process in shipbuilding industries.
Torsional vibration is an important vibration mode when shafts, cylinders and pipes are considered. However, the modal testing of torsional vibrations is not an easy job to carry out because of the lack of proper transducers. This work presents a new torsional vibration transducer based on the magnetostrictive principle and its application to torsional modal testing. The transducer is so designed as to generate/measure only torsional vibrations excluding other vibration modes such as longitudinal and bending vibrations. The transducer is composed of ferromagnetic patches bonded to a test structure, permanent magnets, and a solenoid. Though patches and magnets are bonded to a structure, torsional vibrations are generated and measured wirelessly by a solenoid encircling a test structure. The proposed transducer works even at considerably high frequencies, say, tens of kilohertz. Furthermore, the transducer can be manufactured at a low price. To check the performance of the proposed method, the torsional modal testing on a hollow aluminum shaft was conducted. The results, such as eigenfrequencies, obtained by the proposed transducer agreed favorably with theoretical results.
