  • This study was carried out for the purpose of pre-estimating long-term settlement under condition of actual field soil's property, in case of building up industrial sites on the marine deposit silty clay located at West Coast in Korea. This study analyzed Hyperbolic Method, Square Root Time Method and Exponential Function Method with utilization of measured survey values of settlement in In-Cheon Namdong Industrial Sites. In the future, for the continuos utilization, it seemed to be needed that further the survey values of fields should be accurartely measured for the analysis of more accurate pre-estimate about long-term settlement. Among the prediction methods of settlement Hyperbolic Method seemed to be the best fitting method for measured data. The settlement equations were derived from above three methods, for long-term settlements.

  • A fundamental study of the pile-soil systems subjected to negative skin friction in soft soil was conducted using the long-term field measurements. The emphasis was on the identification of the magnitude and distribution of skin frictions ($\alpha$ and $\beta$ coefficients) in bitumen coated and uncoated piles. A skin friction coefficient of instrumented piles is back-calculated by varying degrees of consolidation (U) of surrounding soils. It is shown that the bitumen coated pile is capable of reducing the negative skin friction up to almost 50 to 90 percents. Through comparisons with the existing friction coefficient values ($\alpha$ and $\beta$ coefficients), the calculated coefficients are within the appropriate range, and thus we can suggest basic materials to estimate the realistic pile behavior in the short-term and long-term analysis.

  • For shallow tunnel constructions, settlement of the ground surface is a main issue. Recent technical developments in shield TBM tunneling technique have enabled a decrease in such settlements based on tunneling with ground deformation controls. For this objective, the tail void grouting is a common practice. Generally surface settlements in a soil of low permeability occur during a tunnel construction but also during a long period after completion of the tunnel. The long-term settlements occur mainly due to consolidation around the tunnel. The consolidation process is caused and determined by the tail void grouting which leads to an excess pore water pressure in the vicinity of the tunnel. Because of this, the grouting pressure has a strong effect on the long-term settlements in the shield tunneling. In order to investigate this effect, a series of coupled hydro-mechanical 3D finite element simulations have been performed. The results show that an increase in grouting pressure reduces the short-term settlements, but in many cases, it doesn't lead to a reduction of the final settlements after the completion of consolidation. Thereby, the existence of a critical grouting pressure is identified, at which the minimal settlements are expected.

  • This study sets it's face to define effects of the various loading periods in normal consolidation area on clay's compression and long-term consolidation characteristics through a laboratory test using homogeneous remolded clay. Moreover, by carrying out a long-term consolidation test which diversifies initial consolidation applicable to effective overburden loading in the various loading period. This study intended to suggest the method predicting the final settlement on the basis of loading periods by comparing and analyzing compression curve's characteristics according to loading weight of each stage and increase in loading period when carrying out the standard consolidation test. From the test results, the study shows that as of the soft clay's compression characteristics on the basis of various loading periods, preconsolidation load has a tendency to be decreased slightly as the loading period is getting more and more longer at each step after initial consolidation load puts on the remolded clay which is caused by secondary consolidation's increase in the latter part of each phase. And those effects have an weaker influence on compression index in normal consolidation area at the same time as secondary consolidation brought out quasi-overconsolidation and stabilization of clay's structure, have an influence re-compression index is increased in overconsolidation area on the other hand.

  • The microcomputer program PileNSF (Pile Negative Skin Friction) is developed by the authors in a graphical user interface (GUI) environment using $MATLAB^{(R)}$ for predicting the bearing capacity of a pile embedded in a consolidating ground by surcharge loading. The proposed method extends the one-dimensional soil-pile model based on the nonlinear load transfer method in OpenSees to perform an advanced one-dimensional consolidation settlement analysis based on finite strain. The developed program has significant features of incorporating Mikasa's finite strain consolidation theory that accounts for reduction in the thickness of the clay layer as well as the change of the soil-pile interface length during the progress of consolidation. In addition, the consolidating situation of the ground by surcharge filling after the time of pile installation can also be considered in the analysis. The program analysis by the presented method has been verified and validated with several case studies of long-term test on single piles subjected to negative skin friction. Predicted results of negative skin friction (downdrag and dragload) as a result of long from consolidation settlement are shown to be in good agreement with measured and observed case data.

  • The acceleration of consolidation by stone columns was mostly analysed within the framework of a basic unit cell model (i.e. a cylindrical soil body around a column). A method of converting the axisymmetric unit cell into the equivalent plane-strain model would be required for two-dimensional numerical modelling of multi-column field applications. This paper proposes two practical simplified conversion methods to obtain the equivalent plane-strain model of the unit cell, and investigates their applicability to multi-column reinforced ground. In the first conversion method, the soil permeability is matched according to an analytical equation, whereas in the second method, the column width is matched based on the equivalence of column area. The validity of these methods is tested by comparison with the numerical results of unit-cell simulations and with the field data from an embankment case history. The results show that for the case of linear-elastic material modelling, both methods produce reasonably accurate long-term consolidation settlements, whereas for the case of elasto-plastic material modelling, the second method is preferable as the first one gives erroneously lower long-term settlements, where plastic yielding of stone column are ignored.

  • Recent experiments investigating the analgesic or anti-stress effects of electro-acupuncture provide extensive evidence that opioid or stress hormone system is involved in those effects, respectively. It has been also suggested that opioid or stress hormones modulate long-term memory consolidation or retrieval in animals and human subjects. This article reviews the possibilitythat electroacupuncture can modulate memory consolidation or retrieval. The release of serum cortisol is enhanced or reduced by high-frequency or low-frequency electroacupuncture, respectively. Also the release of beta endorphin and enkephalin is enhanced by low-frequency electroacupuncture and the release of dynorphin is enhanced by high-frequency electroacupunture. The memory consolidation is enhanced by post-training injection of Glucocorticoids, Naloxone or Dynorphin. So this review suggests strongly that memory consolidation can be modulated by electroacupuncture.

  • The gravitational consolidation behavior of the dredged ground with horizontal drains is analyzed using a finite difference program developed for self-weight consolidation analysis with horizontal drains. The influence of area and direction of horizontal drains on the consolidation time and settlement is analyzed. Various field conditions such as the non-treated ground below horizontal drain installed ground, the accumulation of drained water at the end of horizontal drains, are also included in the analyses. It was found that a slight decrease of consolidation time is resulted in the twice increase of the sectional area of drains. Installing drains vertically can reduce the consolidation time more significantly than installing drains horizontally. The analyses showed quantitatively that the non-treated ground below the horizontal drain installed ground has much influence on long term consolidation settlement, and the accumulation of hydraulic head at the end of horizontal drains results in the increase of consolidation time and insufficient consolidation.

  • In some port construction, a case of reclamation with dredged soil for land use can be found. Even though this is not a new technology, there are some problems on the test method and analysis. The design parameters are still remained to be solved to get accurate prediction. Sedimentation of particle and self-weight consolidation are the most important design parameters in reclamation by dredged soils. The design parameters are influenced by properties of the physical and sedimentation of dredged soils. This influencing factors can be determined depend on the history of long term sedimentation and particle characteristics. Thus, properties of the sedimentation and consolidation are varies depend on the regional geologic formation. In this paper, three different sites with different regional soil properties will be compared in design parameters of sedimentation and self-weight consolidation.

  • Recently, construction of housing sites, complexes, roads, ports and airports is increasing for high-intensity use of the country and balanced development between regions. Presently, constructions are being conducted at soft ground. Consequently, engineering problems as long-term settlement of the ground, differential settlement, local structural damage have been reported consistently at construction site. In particular, long-term subsidence of the ground as various constructions and loads by the load will necessarily occur in the soft ground of west-south coast and inland coast. Therefore, in this study, regional proper analysis methods of the Hyperbole method, Hosino method, $\sqrt{S}$ method, Asaoka method etc as existing long-term settlement prediction methods have been examined and a study on new prediction method was conducted through deduction of a generalized equation. Correlation coefficients of soil properties and construction conditions has been analyzed and a matching coefficient of long-term settlement characteristics has been deducted. Comparison and analysis of monitoring data and numerical analysis results of 16 local area have been conducted.
