1993년 4월 22-24일에 관측된 황사현상에 대한 종관분석 (Synoptic analyses of the Yellow Sand Events observed over the Korean peninsula during 22-24 April, 1993)

  • The Yellow Sand Events observed over the Korean peninsula during 22-24 April, 1993 were examined using the synoptic data and GMS visible image to identify the transport path of the Yellow Sand and the main factor governing the duration of the Yellow Sand phenomenon. The 850 hPa convergence chart and the 700 hPa trajectory analyses of the air mass laden with Yellow Sand particles suggested that the Yellow Sand particles observed over Korea were probably transported from the Gobi Desert and the Loess Plateau. The duration of the Yellow Sand Events was about 35-40 hours rather shorter than normal as the high pressure system centered near the Mongolia region moved rapidly toward the Yellow Sea, which drove away the Yellow Sand particles over the Korean peninsula toward the Japan Islands, furthermore the low-level stratification of the air mass over the Korean penishula showed the unstable atmospheric condition leading to atmospheric diffusion of the particles. The trajectory analyses and the GMS visible image indicated that the long-range transport of the air mass laden with the Yellow Sand particles of this case was more dependent on the 700 hPa air flow than on the 850 hPa air flow.

Investigations on aerosols transport over micro- and macro-scale settings of West Africa

  • The aerosol content dynamics in a virtual system were investigated. The outcome was extended to monitor the mean concentration diffusion of aerosols in a predefined macro and micro scale. The data set used were wind data set from the automatic weather station; satellite data set from Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer aerosol index and multi-angle imaging spectroradiometer; ground data set from Aerosol robotic network. The maximum speed of the macro scale (West Africa) was less than 4.4 m/s. This low speed enables the pollutants to acquire maximum range of about 15 km. The heterogeneous nature of aerosols layer in the West African atmosphere creates strange transport pattern caused by multiple refractivity. It is believed that the multiple refractive concepts inhibit aerosol optical depth data retrieval. It was also discovered that the build-up of the purported strange transport pattern with time has enormous potential to influence higher degrees of climatic change in the long term. Even when the African Easterly Jet drives the aerosols layer at about 10 m/s, the interacting layers of aerosols are compelled to mitigate its speed to about 4.2 m/s (macro scale level) and boost its speed to 30 m/s on the micro scale level. Mean concentration diffusion of aerosols was higher in the micro scale than the macro scale level. The minimum aerosol content dynamics for non-decaying, logarithmic decay and exponential decay particulates dispersion is given as 4, 1.4 and 0 respectively.

겨울철 도시지역 대기 수용성 에어로졸 입자의 크기 분포를 결정하는 주요 인자 (Major factors determining the size distributions of atmospheric water-soluble aerosol particles at an urban site during winter)

  • Size distributions of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) and its water-soluble organic and inorganic components were measured between January and February 2021 at an urban site in Gwangju in order to identify the major factors that determine their size distributions. Their size distributions during the study period were mainly divided into two groups. In the first group, PM, NO3-, SO42-, NH4+ and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) exhibited bi-modal size distributions with a dominant condensation mode at a particle size of 0.32 ㎛. This group was dominated by local production of secondary water-soluble components under atmospheric stagnation and low relative humidity (RH) conditions, rather than long-range transportation of aerosol particles from China. On the other hand, in the second group, they showed tri-modal size distributions with a very pronounced droplet mode at a diameter of 1.0 ㎛. These size distributions were attributable to the local generation and accumulation of secondary aerosol particles under atmospheric conditions such as atmospheric stagnation and high RH, and an increase in the influx of atmospheric aerosol particles by long-distance transportation abroad. Contributions of droplet mode NO3-, SO42-, NH4+ and WSOC to fine particles in the second group were significantly higher than those in the first group period. However, their condensation mode contributions were about two-fold higher in the first group than in the second group. The significant difference in the size distribution of the accumulation mode of the WSOC and secondary ionic components between the two groups was due to the influx of aerosol particles with a long residence time by long-distance transport from China and local weather conditions (e.g., RH).

주성분분석을 이용한 기종점 데이터의 압축 및 주요 패턴 도출에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Compression and Major Pattern Extraction Method of Origin-Destination Data with Principal Component Analysis)

  • 기종점 데이터는 수요 분석 및 서비스 설계를 위해서 대중교통, 도로운영 등 다양한 분야에서 저장 및 활용되고 있다. 최근 빅데이터의 활용성이 증대되면서 기종점 데이터의 분석 및 활용에 대한 수요도 함께 증가하고 있다. 기존의 일반적인 교통 정보 데이터가 수집장비 수(n)에 비례하여 데이터양이 증가(α·n)하는 것과는 다르게, 기종점 데이터는 수집지점 수(n)의 증가에 따라 수집 데이터의 양이 기하급수적으로 증가(α·n2)하는 경향이 있다. 이로 인하여 기종점 데이터를 원시 데이터의 형태로 장기간 저장하고 빅데이터 분석에 활용하는 것은 대용량의 저장 공간이 필요하다는 것을 고려할 때 실용적 대안으로 여겨지지 않고 있다. 이와 함께 기종점 데이터는 0~10 사이의 작은 수요 부분에 패턴화된 형태와 무작위 적인 형태의 데이터가 섞여있어 작은 수요가 그룹화되어 발생하는 주요 패턴을 추출하기에 어려움이 있다. 이러한 기종점 데이터의 저장용량의 한계와 패턴화 분석의 한계를 극복하고자 본 연구에서는 주성분 분석을 활용한 대중교통 기종점 데이터의 압축 및 분석 방법을 제안하였다. 본 연구에서는 서울시와 세종시의 대중교통 이용 데이터를 활용하여 모빌리티 데이터를 분석하고, 모빌리티 기종점 데이터에 포함된 무작위 성향이 높은 데이터를 제거하기 위해 주성분분석 기반의 데이터 압축 및 복원에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 주성분분석으로 분해된 기종점 데이터와 원데이터를 비교하여 주요한 수요 패턴을 찾고 이를 통해 압축률과 복원율을 높일 수 있는 주성분 범위를 제안하였다. 본 연구에서 분석한 결과, 서울시 기준 1~80, 세종시 기준 1~60까지의 주성분을 사용할 경우 주요 이동 데이터의 손실 없이 기종점 데이터에 포함되어있는 노이즈를 제거하고 데이터를 압축 및 복원이 가능하였다.

2005년 7월 서울시 미세먼지 고농도 현상에 대한 분석 (Analysis of the high PM10 concentration episode on July 2005 at Seoul)

  • 서울의 대기오염, 특히 고농도 대기오염 사례는 시민 건강에 매우 부정적일뿐만 아니라, 일반 시민들이 서울시에 대해 느끼는 체감오염도에도 중요한 변수이다. 따라서 이러한 고농도 대기오염 사례의 원인을 규명하는 것은 과학적으로 중요할 뿐만 아니라 사회적으로도 중요한 문제이다. 2005년 7월 22일부터 31일 사이에 고농도 대기오염 사례가 관측되었다. 이 대기오염 사례에 대해 측정소 간의 시계열분석, 에어로졸 성분 분석, 궤적 분석 등의 종합적인 해석을 통해, 대기오염 사례가 국지적인 것이었는지, 외부 영향에 의한 것인지 규명 하였다. 측정 결과를 바탕으로 이 사례를 7월 22~27일(기간 1)과 28~31일(기간 2)의 두 기간으로 구분하였다. 우리나라의 도시대기측정소의 PM10 농도 추이를 분석한 결과, 기간 1에는 춘천의 PM10 농도와 3시간 후에 서울의 PM10 농도가 상관관계가 높았으며, 기간 2에는 중부 지방 전체의 PM10 농도 사이에 상관관계가 높았다. 기간 1에는 풍속이 점차 강해져서 오염물질이 희석되는 경향을 보였으며, 기간 2에는 풍속이 점차 약해져 정체성 특성을 보여 고농도가 계속 유지되었다. 관측한 PM2.5 이온 조성은 기간 1보다는 기간 2에 높았으며, 두 기간 모두, 서울의 평균 농도보다는 매우 높았다. 궤적분석 결과 기간 1에는 시계열 분석 결과와 일치하게, 공기덩어리가 중국에서 북한과 강원도를 거쳐 서울로 이동하였고, 기간 2에는 중국에서 직접 서울로 이동하였다. 현재는 북한의 대기오염물질 배출 정도나 대기오염도에 대한 자료가 부족하여 보다 상세한 분석이 힘들다. 그러나 북한의 영향이 상당할 것으로 보이므로 이에 대한 연구가 필요하다 (Kim et al., 2011). 이 연구 결과는 2005년 7월 하순에 서울에서 발생한 대기오염 에피소드는 외부 영향, 특히 중국 영향에 의한 것임을 보여준다. 그러나 같은 외부 영향이라도 공기의 이동 경로와 풍속에 따라 오염 특성이 달라지는 것을 확인하였다.

서울지역 연무와 관련된 에어로졸의 광학 특성: 스카이라디오미터 및 위성관측연구 (Optical Properties of Aerosols Related to Haze Events over Seoul Inferred from Skyradiometer and Satellite-Borne Measurements)

  • Optical properties of aerosols associated with haze events over Seoul were examined using ground-based skyradiometer and satellite-borne CALIOP and MODIS measurements over the 2009~2010 period. It is shown that aerosol optical thickness (AOT), ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponents (${\alpha}$), and fine-mode particles increase during the haze events. The CALIOP-measured vertical profiles of aerosol during the haze events revealed that most of aerosols are loaded within layers below 4 km altitude. A large portion of these events appear to be related to the long-range transport of aerosols from China; about 35% and 18% of the haze events observed over Seoul were traced back to northern China and southern China, respectively. Compared with optical properties for locally-induced haze events (25%), these long-range transported aerosols are found to have relatively higher AOTs.

Performance of Alternative Refrigerants in Low Temperature Chillers

  • This paper is about the performance of alternative refrigerants for low temperature and transport refrigeration chillers. A breadboard refrigeration chiller was constructed with counterflow heat exchangers. R502, its transitional alternatives of R402A and R402B, and long-term alternatives of R404A and R507 were tested in an attempt to compare the performance of each refrigerant against R502. Measurements were conducted at two condensing temperatures of 43.3$^{\circ}C$ and 52.$0^{\circ}C$ and the evaporating temperature was varied over a range from -$25^{\circ}C$ to -5$^{\circ}C$. The evaporator superheat and condenser subcooling were maintained constant at about 5$^{\circ}C$ for all tests. Test results showed that all alternative fluids tested in this work can be used as 'drop-in fluids' to replace R502 without any major problem. It is also found that in the long run HFC alternatives are to be used due to their favorable environmental characteristics and better performance.

Characteristics of long-range transported PM2.5 at a coastal city using the single particle aerosol mass spectrometry

  • Air pollution has attracted ever-increasing attention because of its substantial influence on air quality and human health. To better understand the characteristics of long-range transported pollution, the single particle chemical composition and size were investigated by the single particle aerosol mass spectrometry in Fuzhou, China from 17th to 22nd January, 2016. The results showed that the haze was mainly caused by the transport of cold air mass under higher wind speed (10 m·s-1) from the Yangtze River Delta region to Fuzhou. The number concentration elevated from 1,000 to 4,500 #·h-1, and the composition of mobile source and secondary aerosol increased from 24.3% to 30.9% and from 16.0% to 22.5%, respectively. Then, the haze was eliminated by the clean air mass from the sea as indicated by a sharp decrease of particle number concentration from 4,500 to 1,000 #·h-1. The composition of secondary aerosol and mobile sources decreased from 29.3% to 23.5% and from 30.9% to 23.1%, respectively. The particles with the size ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 ㎛ were mainly in the accumulation mode. The stationary source, mobile source, and secondary aerosol contributed to over 70% of the potential sources. These results will help to understand the physical and chemical characteristics of long- range transported pollutants.

Impinging jet simulation of stationary downburst flow over topography

  • A non-translating, long duration thunderstorm downburst has been simulated experimentally and numerically by modelling a spatially stationary steady flow impinging air jet. Velocity profiles were shown to compare well with an upper-bound of velocity measurements reported for full-scale microbursts. Velocity speed-up over a range of topographic features in simulated downburst flow was also tested with comparisons made to previous work in a similar flow, and also boundary layer wind tunnel experiments. It was found that the amplification measured above the crest of topographic features in simulated downburst flow was up to 35% less than that observed in boundary layer flow for all shapes tested. From the computational standpoint we conclude that the Shear Stress Transport (SST) model performs the best from amongst a range of eddy-viscosity and second moment closures tested for modelling the impinging jet flow.

Crystal Growth and Characterization of the Solid Solution $(ZnSe)_{1-x}(CuMSe_2)_x$ (M-Al, Ga, or In)

  • Single crystals of (ZnSe)1-x(CuMSe2)x (M=Al, Ga, or In) were grown by chemical vapor transport technique. Powdered polycrystalline samples of (ZnSe)1-x(CuMSe2)x (M=Al, Ga, or In) were also prepared by the direct combination of the elements. The chemical composition of these single crystals was determined by comparing their lattice parameters with those of the standard polycrystalline samples. The IR transmission range of single crystals of (ZnSe)1-x(CuMSe2)x (M=Al, Ga, or In) is slightly narrower than that observed for pure ZnSe. However, these materials still show good transmission in the long-wavelength IR range. The addition of small amounts of CuMSe2 (M=Al, Ga, or In) considerably increases the hardness of ZnSe.
