  • This paper presents the results of a sea trial for very long range spread spectrum underwater acoustic communication conducted in the East Sea in September 2021. Signals were collected through 8 vertical sensors, and the range between the transmitter and receiver was about 160 km. 30 bps Multi-Code Spread Spectrum (MCSS) method and 100 bps Chirp Spread Spectrum method were used for the transmitting signal generation. The results show that when the channel coding technique was not used in a single channel, the uncoded bit error rate was high, but when the Equal Gain Combining (EGC) diversity technique was used after frame synchronization in each receiving channel, the uncoded bit error rate was reduced to 0.1 or less.

  • This paper presents the results of a sea trial for long range underwater acoustic communication conducted in the East Sea in November 2020. Signals were collected through a moving transmitter and 16 vertically arranged receivers, and the range between the transmitter and receiver was about 20 km. The signal in the experiment is a conventional Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) method and a superimposed DSSS method that increases data rate by superimposing of multiple circulated Pseudo Noise (PN) sequences for each symbol. The results show that the uncoded bit error rate averaged over 16 channels to which the channel coding technique was not applied was 0.0005 for the conventional direct sequence spreading method, and was 0.00124 for the superimposed direct sequence spreading method.

  • Unlike a short-range, a long-range underwater acoustic communication(UWAC) uses low frequency signal and deep sound channel to minimize propagation loss. In this case, even though communication signals are modulated using a covert transmission technique such as spread spectrum, it is hard to conceal the existence of the signals. The unconcealed communication signal can be utilized as active sonar signal by enemy and presence of underwater vehicles may be exposed to the interceptor. Since it is very important to maintain stealthiness for underwater vehicles, the detection probability of friendly underwater vehicles should be considered when interceptor utilizes our long-range UWAC signal. In this paper, we modeled a long-range UWAC environment for analyzing the detection performance of underwater vehicles and proposed the region of interest(ROI) setup method and the measurement of detection performance. By computer simulations, we yielded parameters, analyzed the detection probability and the detection performance in ROI. The analysis results showed that the proposed detection performance analysis method for underwater vehicles could play an important role in the operation of long-range UWAC equipment.

  • A mathematical model for a long range water supply planning is develoted as a dynamic capacitated facility location problem, in which operation costs and two types of fixed costs are considered. The fixed costs are for water supply systems such as dams and reservoirs and for water conveyance systems of waterways or conduits from each water supply points. A Spreadsheet model is developed to support the efficiency of user interface and to implement a heuristic solution procedure. The proposed solution procedure utilizes SOLVER tool and it has been applied to a system with fictitious data but with reality and applicability in mind. As a result of the mathematical analysis, not only the most economic construction timings of surface water supply facilities and distribution systems but also the most economical water supply operating patterns are identified.

  • Objective : The purpose of this large prospective study is to assess the association between the disappearance of the lateral spread response (LSR) before and after microvascular decompression (MVD) and clinical long term results over two years following hemifacial spasm (HFS) treatment. Methods : Continuous intra-operative monitoring during MVD was performed in 244 consecutive patients with HFS. Patients with persistent LSR after decompression (n=22, 9.0%), without LSR from the start of the surgery (n=4, 1.7%), and with re-operation (n=15, 6.1%) and follow-up loss (n=4, 1.7%) were excluded. For the statistical analysis, patients were categorized into two groups according to the disappearance of their LSR before or after MVD. Results : Intra-operatively, the LSR was checked during facial electromyogram monitoring in 199 (81.5%) of the 244 patients. The mean follow-up duration was $40.9{\pm}6.9$ months (range 25-51 months) in all the patients. Among them, the LSR disappeared after the decompression (Group A) in 128 (64.3%) patients; but in the remaining 71 (35.6%) patients, the LSR disappeared before the decompression (Group B). In the post-operative follow-up visits over more than one year, there were significant differences between the clinical outcomes of the two groups (p<0.05). Conclusion : It was observed that the long-term clinical outcomes of the intra-operative LSR disappearance before and after MVD were correlated. Thus, this factor may be considered a prognostic factor of HFS after MVD.

  • In this paper, we present the study on the proposed design of a real-time transmission of a video from the drone to broadcasting station (OBVan) by using F8L10D-N LoRa Module. Nowadays, LoRa technology is proved to be the mass of low cost, long range machine-to-machine connectivity. Particularly in the field of broadcasting and communication system, F8L10D-N LoRa RF Module spread spectrum technology with long transmission distance and strong penetrative ability that is double stronger than traditional FSK as well as PSK modulation scheme.

  • To measure temporal variability of long- range transmission in northern part of the East Sea of Korea, low frequency acoustic sources were deployed on the continental shelf 0.4km south of Cape Shultz near the port of Vladivostok during October 1999. The transmissions of the phase modulated signals were recorded by VLA moored on the northern slope of Ulleung-do. The measured signals were processed for the acoustic arrivals and their variability in time. The temporal signal processing involves pulse compression of the phase-encoded signal, time spread and temporal coherence processing. Variability of the ocean sound speed field in time scales of short period seems to be dominated by random fluctuations caused by sound speed perturbation due to the vertical displacements associated with internal waves.

  • A single-photon laser and mid-wave infrared (MWIR) common aperture optical system was designed and developed to detect and range a long-distance civil aviation aircraft. The secondary mirror of the Ritchey-Chretien (R-C) optical system was chosen as a dichroic lens to realize the design of a common aperture system for the laser and MWIR. Point spread function (PSF) ellipticity was introduced to evaluate the coupling efficiency of the laser receiving system. A small aperture stop and narrow filter were set in the secondary image plane and an afocal light path of the laser system, respectively, and the stray light suppression ability of the small aperture stop was verified by modeling and simulation. With high-precision manufacturing technology by single point diamond turning (SPDT) and a high-efficiency dichroic coating, the laser/MWIR common aperture optical system with a 𝜑300 mm aluminum alloy mirror obtained images of buildings at a distance of 5 km with great quality. A civil aviation aircraft detection experiment was conducted. The results show that the common aperture system could detect and track long-distance civil aviation aircraft effectively, and the coverage was more than 450 km (signal-to-noise ratio = 6.3). It satisfied the application requirements for earlier warning and ranging of long-range targets in the area of aviation, aerospace and ground detection systems.

  • The wide spread of DC electric railway systems such as urban rapid transits including heavy rail and light rail transits has significant ramification as the stray currents from return conductor rails can cause the electrochemical interference, that is, the electrolytic corrosion of both rails and outside underground metallic infrastructures. The immature understanding of either the railway authority who is responsible for establishing the necessary provisions at the design stage or the affected parties makes it difficult to prepare the optimum range of solutions for the long-pending interference problem. In Japan, however, numerous assessment studies have been carried out on the stray current interference, by which protective guidelines are provided by "Electrolysis Committee". In this paper, we review a guide book from "Tokyo Electrolysis Committee", namely, "Protective Methods for Stray Current Corrosion".
