  • The paper aims to investigate the asymmetric long-run and short-run relationships between inflation and remittance outflows in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (hereafter KSA) over the period 1971-2019 by using the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model. The statistical tests have supported the validity and stability of the model. The Wald F-test statistics confirm the existence of a long-run equilibrium relationship among the model variables; remittance outflows, positive (negative) shocks in inflation rates, investment, real GDP, and trade openness. Moreover, the empirical results confirm the existence of an asymmetric effect of the inflation rate on remittance outflows. The response of foreign workers to an increase in inflation rates differs from their response to a decrease in inflation rates. However, this asymmetric relationship between the increases/decreases in inflation and remittance outflows is significantly weak. The weakness of this relationship is due to the high marginal remittance propensity of migrant workers, which is explained by the low consumption propensity of foreign workers and their ability to adjust to the high cost of living due to inflation and the imposition of accompanying fees. Finally, the change in the inflation rate is not among the main factors influencing foreign remittance decisions in Saudi Arabia.

  • Since changes in crude oil price exert colossal influence upon most national economy, it is important to investigate about factors that cause the change through an appropriate crude oil price forecast. This paper examines the relationship among crude oil price, OPEC production and U.S. inventory using cointegration and error correction model. We found that crude oil price is likely to increase significantly for a given decrease in not only the OPEC production but also the U.S. inventory. Furthermore, we found that crude oil price is more elastic with respect to OPEC production in the short-run, and more elastic with respect to U.S. inventory in the long-run. Moreover, in the long-run, U.S. inventory have more an effect on crude oil price than OPEC production. Finally, crude oil price adjusts to their respective long-run equilibrium at a moderate speed, about 12% of adjustment taking place in the first year.

  • This paper empirically investigates a long-run and short-run equilibrium relationships for exchange rate and stock prices in Korea and Japan from January 1998 to July 2008. Because using monthly data in my study, analyzes unit root test and VEC model including seasonality to overcome bias that happen in seasonal adjustment. The empirical evidence suggests that exists strong evidence supporting the long-run cointegration relationships between exchange rates and stock prices of the Korea and Japan. This implies that it is possible to predict one market from another for both countries, which seems to violate the efficient market hypothesis. In the long-run a negative relationship running from the KRW/JPY real exchange rate to the stock prices of Korea strongly argues for the traditional approach.

  • Sustainable agriculture is a management system for ecological equilibrium and long-run productivity. Conversions from conventional to sustainable farming systems could have good effects on future generations' productivity and agricultural market opening in Korea. However, farmers are not willing to adopt sustainable farming system as because of farm income reductions, so government programs may be needed. Government programs should have research support for cost reductions, direct support for advocational livestock breedings and income security, and relative price changes for reducing agricultural chemicals.

  • Evaluating the empirical validity of Modern Monetary Theory, this study implements panel cointegration analysis on annual panel data (2000-2022) of OECD countries. Specifically, the sample countries are divided into groups based on the presence of their own sovereign currencies, and for each group, the long-run equilibrium relation (cointegration) between the ratio of public debt or fiscal deficit and government bond rates is tested and estimated. Main findings are as follows: applying the pooled mean-group estimation for panel cointegration, it is found that both the ratios of public debt and fiscal deficit have significantly positive long-run correlation with government bond rates in countries without sovereign currency such as the Euro-zone or fixed exchange rate regime countries. However, in countries with sovereign currency such as non-Euro-zone or floating exchange rate regime countries, the long-run correlation is either negative or not statistically significant. Particularly, in countries without sovereign currency, the ratio of public debt has significantly positive correlation with the real government bond rates in the short run as well as the long run. These results are consistent with the prediction of Modern Monetary Theory, thus providing a supporting evidence for the empirical validity of the theory.

  • This study aims to update the supply-demand model of wood products(FOSMO-2013) and to forecast mid and long run supply and demand for each products. The subjects of the study include sawnwood, plywood, particle board, fiberboard(MDF), and pulp. The updated partial equilibrium model is composed of supply function, import demand function, demand function, price relation function. The long run outlooks of world prices of wood and wood products are imported from the results of Buongiorno(2012). This study also adopt Buongiorno's scenarios, which includes three scenarios of IPCC(A1B, A2, B2) and the other one with assumption of increasing fuelwood consumption of A1B scenario. The result says that the domestic productions of wood products are expecting to decrease while the imports of them increase even there are some differences among the products as well as scenarios.

  • In this paper, we test and estimate the stochastic non-fundamental trend in Korean stock market. For this, following Kim (2011), we exploit that the long-run equilibrium stock price may be decomposed into fundamental and stochastic non-fundamental trends (i.e., the sum of dividend innovations and a part that are orthogonal with the dividend innovations) by using the Beveridge-Nelson decomposition and projections. In this VAR construction, there is an error correction mechanism through which stock prices converge to their long-run equilibrium, which also contain the stated stochastic non-fundamental trend as well as fundamental trend. The estimation and test results using yearly data from the Korea (1976-2012) indicated that fluctuations in stock prices during that period can be explained mainly not by the stochastic non-fundamental trend but by the dividend trend. However, during some periods like after Seoul Olympic Games, we may observe the non-fundamental trend affected to the stock price variation.

  • With the increasing improvement of living standard, people pay more attention to the quality and security of their food. There is an increase in the consumption of aquatic products and a vast prospect of its trade. Fisheries as a major one of the traditional industries in China have significant price advantages and natural resources. However, marine pollution in China is more and more serious and the expecting of aquatic products has been seriously influenced by green barriers in the recent years. This paper tries to examine the effect of Chinese marine pollution on export of aquatic products in China. This paper utilizes cointegration test to estimate long-run equilibrium between marine pollution and fisheries products export. The results indicate that real exchange rate and income variable have positive effects and fish price has negative effect on China's fisheries export to Korea. However, marine pollution variable has no statistically significant effect on dependant variable. And according to the result of China's fisheries export to Japan, exchange rate has positive effect and both fish price and marine pollution variable have negative effects on export. Lastly, marine pollution and income level have effects on dependant variable in the case of Hong Kong, but exchange rate and price variable have no significant effect on aquatic products export from China to Hong Kong. In a word, marine pollution of China is a serious problem and it has negative effect on Chinese export of aquatic products.

  • Purpose - This study investigates whether the lagged price difference ratio between preferred and common stocks is related to the return and closing price of the preferred stock using three panel models. Design/methodology/approach - As a first step, we use a two-way fixed effect panel model with stationary preferred stock returns as a dependent variable. For robustness, we then apply the autoregressive distributed lag model (ARDL) and error correction model (ECM) with nonstationary closing prices of the preferred stocks as a dependent variable and compare the results of each model. The ARDL and ECM models provide an advantage of estimating a long-run equilibrium equation together if a long-run relationship exists between the two time-series variables compared to the fixed effect model. Findings - Our sample consists of 107 preferred stocks with at least four years of daily observations as of the end of December 2023. The coefficients of the error correction terms in the ARDL and ECM models are highly statistically significant, approximately -0.08. This indicates that the disequilibrium between the closing prices of common and preferred stocks adjusts by about 8% per day toward equilibrium. In all three models, the price difference ratio on day t-1 was statistically significant in explaining the preferred stock returns or closing prices on day t, implying that trading based on the previous day's price difference ratio is effective for one day. Research implications or Originality - Furthermore, the returns on preferred stocks are higher for firms with a lower proportion of foreign investors or a lower foreign market capitalization of preferred stocks. This suggests that foreign investors with informational advantages do not actively engage in profit-taking by trading preferred stocks, thus not narrowing the price difference. In summary, the recent surge in preferred stock prices is likely driven mainly by the irrational behavior of retail investors.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the Balassa-Samuelson effect that real exchange rate could deviate from its long-run equilibrium. To analyze this effect, I estimated the long-run relationship between real exchange and productivity using the dynamic panel ordinary least square(DOLS) and panel error correction model(ECM) after conducting the unit root and cointegration test. The results show that all variables except for the real exchange rate have the unit root. Then I conducted the cointegration test to find out whether there exist the stable long-run relationships. The results show that the variables are cointegrated and significant statistically. The DOLS and ECM methods are used to estimate the coefficient of the cointegrated variables. The major finding are that the estimates are statistically significant and that they show the same sign as the economic theory predicts.
