Specially, High Temperature Superconducting power-transmission cable(HTS cable), 3-phase 100m long, 22.9kV class HTS power transmission cable system have been developed by Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI) and LS cable Ltd. that is one of 21st century frontier project in Korea. This cable was installed in KEPCO(Go-chang) testing site. In case of manufacturing HTS cable, superconducting joint is very important because they need very long tapes. Therefore, this paper gives some investigation of AC Loss in joined HTS tape by using several joint methods. Finally, this paper was shown background data for the form of HTS cable joint.
The objective of this study is to estimate the mechanical characteristics and nonlinear behaviors on the geometric nonlinear analysis of curved cable-membrane roof systems for long span lightweight roof structures. The weight of a cable-membrane roof dramatically can reduce, but the single layer cable-membrane roof systems are too flexible and difficult to achieve the required structural stiffness. A curved cable roof system with reverse curvature works more effectively as a load bearing system, the pretension of cables can easily increase the structural stiffness. The curved cable roof system can transmit vertical loads in up and downward direction, and work effectively as a load bearing structure to resists self-weights, snow and wind loads. The nonlinear behavior and mechanical characteristics of a cable roof system has greatly an affect by the sag and pretension. This paper is carried out analyzing and comparing the tensile forces and deflection of curved roof systems by vertical loads. The elements for analysis uses a tension only cable element and a triangular membrane element with 3 degree of freedom in each node. The authors will show that the curved cable-membrane roof system with reverse curvature is a very lightweight and small deformation roof for external loads.
To explore the favorable structural system of cable-stayed bridges with ultra-kilometer main span, based on a fully self-anchored cable-stayed bridge with 1400 m main span, a partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridge scheme with the same main span is designed. Numerical investigation on the dynamic characteristics, aerostatic and aerodynamic stability of both two bridge schemes is conducted, and the results are compared to those of a suspension bridge with similar main span, and considering from the aspect of wind stability, the feasibility of using partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridge in super long-span bridges with ultra-kilometer main span is discussed. Moreover, the effects of structural design parameters including the length of earth-anchored girder, the number of auxiliary piers in side span, the height and width of girder, the tower height etc on the dynamic characteristics, aerostatic and aerodynamic stability of a partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridge are analyzed, and their reasonable values are proposed. The results show that as compared to fully self-anchored cable-stayed bridge and suspension bridge with similar main span, the partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridge has greater structural stiffness and better aerostatic and aerodynamic stability, and consequently becomes a favorable structural system for super long-span bridges with ultra-kilometer main span. The partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridge can achieve greater stiffness and better wind stability under the cases of increasing the earth-anchored girder length, increasing the height and width of girder, setting several auxiliary piers in side span and increasing the tower height.
This study deals with the location of partial discharges(PDs) for power cables and GIS using 2 PD sensors and long coaxial signal cables. Throughout the experiments by use of simulated PD pulses and corona discharges in the power cable system, it is found out that the impedance matching between the coaxial signal cable and the measuring equipment should be done for good S/N ratio and the on-site measurement using more than 100m-long coaxial signal cable is possible. In addition, new PD location algorithm with the polarities of PD pulses and the arrival time difference between two pulses was proposed and was proved through the partial discharge experiments for the cable joint defect and artificial void defect.
Length of most underground power cable in home is not so long. Therefore it is operated without transposition due to low unbalanced ratio. However, if cable length is long, line constant of each cable will be different. Different line constant can induce unbalanced voltage and current of sheath. Also it can induce several induced interference. This paper describes the effectiveness of transposition through sheath component analysis on transposition and untransposition of cable conductor. Especially sheath current and induced voltage are analyzed and compared in case of transposition and untransposition. EMTP is used for modeling and analysis.

The objective of this study is to analysis the mechanical characteristics and nonlinear behaviors on the geometric nonlinear behavior of a cable spoke wheel roof system for long span lightweight roof structures. The weight of a cable spoke wheel roof dramatically can reduce and the cable roof system can easily make the required rigidity and shape by the sag ratio and pretension forces. Determining the pretension and initial sag of cable roof system is essential in a design process and the shape of roof is changed by pretension. The nonlinear behavior of flexible cable system has greatly an affect on the sag and pretension. This paper will be carried out analyzing and comparing the tensile forces and deflection of a cable spoke wheel system for the large span retractable roof, and analyzed to deflections and tensile forces by the post height of center hub. The double arrangement of a spoke wheel system with reverse curvature works more effectively as a load bearing system, the pretension can easily increase the structural stiffness. The cable truss system can carry vertical load in up and downward direction, and act effectively as load bearing elements.
The replacement of damaged components is an important task for long-span bridges. Conventional strategy for component replacement is to close the bridge to traffic, so that the influence of the surrounding environment is reduced to a minimum extent. However, complete traffic interruption would bring substantial economic losses and negative social influence nowadays. This paper investigates traffic control technologies without interruption for component replacement of long-span bridges. A numerical procedure of traffic control technologies is proposed incorporating traffic microsimulation and site-specific data, which is then implemented through a case study of cable replacement of a long-span cable-stayed bridge. Results indicate traffic load effects on the bridge are lower than the design values under current low daily traffic volume, and therefore cable replacement could be conducted without traffic control. However, considering a possible medium or high level of daily traffic volume, traffic load effects of girder bending moment and cable force nearest to the replaced cable become larger than the design level. This indicates a potential risk of failure, and traffic control should be implemented. Parametric studies show that speed control does not decrease but increase the load effects, and flow control using lane closure is not effectual. However, weight control and gap control are very effective to mitigate traffic load effects, and it is recommended to employ a weight control with gross vehicle weight no more than 65 t or/and a gap control with minimum vehicle gap no less than 40 m for the cable replacement of the case bridge.
After the 1970s, the importance of underground transmission systems increased and the construction rate of underground transmission lines also showed increasing trends each year, especially in metropolitan areas. Accordingly the social ripple effects are very large and wide when the fault occurs in underground power system, and the amount of time and money spent to restore the system also increases. So we must ensure stable operation and long-term reliability of the facilities. In Korea's case, long-term reliability tests for EHV power cables and accessories progressed poorly because equipment was not compatible for long-term reliability tests. Therefore we planned to construct a long-term reliability test field for EHV underground cables in order to ensure international quality reliability and optimal power cable operation techniques. The Gochang Underground Cable Test Field is under construction, funded by the Korean government, the govenment's union investment department, KEPCO, KERI and three private cable corporations. This project began in March, 2005 and will be completed by February, 2010. It is designed to promote joint research by incorporating several types of test equipment, construction of operating facilities, and being an internationally certified authority.
This paper describes a formulation to predict optimum post-tensioning forces and cable dimensioning for self-anchored cable-stayed suspension bridges. The analysis is developed with respect to both dead and live load configurations, taking into account design constrains concerning serviceability and ultimate limit states. In particular, under dead loads, the analysis is developed with the purpose to calculate the post-tensioning cable forces to achieve minimum deflections for both girder and pylons. Moreover, under live loads, for each cable elements, the lowest required cross-section area is determined, which verifies prescriptions, under ultimate or serviceability limit states, on maximum allowable stresses and bridge deflections. The final configuration is obtained by means of an iterative procedure, which leads to a progressive definition of the stay, hanger and main cable characteristics, concerning both post-tensioning cable stresses and cross-sections. The design procedure is developed in the framework of a FE modeling, by using a refined formulation of the bridge components, taking into account of geometric nonlinearities involved in the bridge components. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can be easily utilized to predict the cable dimensioning also in the framework of long span bridge structures, in which typically more complexities are expected in view of the large number of variables involved in the design analysis.
