  • In this study experimental result of a total of eight SCC and FRSCC slabs with the same cross-section were monitored for up to 240 days to measure the time-dependent development of cracking and deformations under service loads are presented. For this purpose, four SCC mixes are considered in the test program. This study aimed to compare SCC and FRSCC experimental results with conventional concrete experimental results. The steel strains within the high moment regions, the concrete surface strains at the tensile steel level, deflection at the mid-span, crack widths and crack spacing were recorded throughout the testing period. Experimental results show that hybrid fibre reinforced SCC slabs demonstrated minimum instantaneous and time-dependent crack widths and steel fibre reinforced SCC slabs presented minimum final deflection.

  • PURPOSES : In this study, field performance evaluation of crack treatment of pavement and the feasibility of surface treatment of pavement are presented. The performance and cost of preventive maintenance methods have been previously verified, and the methods are being used in many developed countries and cities. However, the performance and cost of the system have not been verified in domestic, field applications. Therefore, in order to improve performance, the field performance is evaluated, and a reasonable cost is proposed. METHODS : Visual Inspection was conducted to evaluate the field application and performance of the preventive maintenance method. In addition, the PCI index was calculated from the results of visual inspection of the application area of the surface treatment method, and the performance life of each method was predicted. For the economic evaluation, life cycle cost analysis was performed using the life cycle cost analysis program. RESULTS :In order to evaluate and quantify the field performance of crack repair material, the residue condition of the pavement surface after crack treatment, rather than the performance of the material, is evaluated. In addition, the crack resistance and performance life of surface treatment methods are evaluated. The cost of currently available treatment methods are compared to the common pavement cut and overlay method, and it is determined that the preventive method is not economical based on life cycle cost analysis. CONCLUSIONS :Because of the characteristics of cracking, it is necessary to conduct the evaluation of currently applied methods and the analysis of the cause of damage, by visual inspection. Moreover, in order to evaluate the performance and economic suitability of the currently applied surface treatment methods, it is necessary to acquire information on application sections by monitoring their long-term conditions and performance.

  • To examine small fatigue crack behavior, the crack opening displacement (COD) was measured for surface cracks in the range of few tens to hundreds .mu.m using the computerized Interferometric Strain/Displacement Gage (ISDG) which could measure the relative displacement with a resolution of 0.02 .mu.m. The load-COD record is stored and analyzed after the test to determined the opening load. Single-edge notched specimens, 2.3mm thick, of Al 2024-T3 were precracked at load ratios of 0.0, -1.0 and -2.0 to make small fatigue cracks. The opening loads were measured these small cracks and compared with those of long cracks. The opening load ratios for the short cracks are about 10% smaller than those for long cracks at positive R-ratios, but are about 100% smaller at negative R-ratios.

  • The initiation of fatigue cracks in a simulated aircraft structure with a series of rivet holes was detected by acoustic emission(AE), then the crack length was determined by surface acoustic wave(SAW) technique. With the initiation and growth of fatigue cracks, AE events increased intermittently to form a stepwise incremental curve of cumulative AE events whereas the crack length increased more or less monotonically. With the SAW technique employed, the crack sizing for 13 different cracks including some short cracks was performed. With the reference to the measurement by traveling microscope, cracks in the range of $1{\sim}8mm$ long were reliably sized by the SAW technique. Although it was impossible to size the short fatigue cracks in the range shorter than 1 mm, the SAW technique still appeared practically useful for a range of crack lengths often found in aircraft structures.

  • Up to date, it is difficult to estimate the consistence of properties on the epoxy liner in service time because an estimation of the long term environment-deterioration with aging has not been processed. In the study, the estimation on epoxy liner is carried by the physical test 7 rounds. There are the elongation the and the crack bridging test in the part of physical tests. An elongation test is carried out with epoxy membrane and a crack bridging test is carried out with specimen painted epoxy on concrete. The subjects of test and estimation are a containment quality system and a fibre-glass reinforced system. The materials of these systems are a Robber added Epoxy, a Silica added Epoxy, and a Fiber reinforced Epoxy. Ensuring the test data, properties of epoxy liner was estimated and the change of properties was predicted on epoxy liners.

  • In order to investigate the fatigue fracture characteristics by corrosion degradation of 12Cr alloy steel, both the fatigue characteristics in air of them artificially degraded during long period and the corrosion fatigue characteristics were experimentally evaluated in various environments which were determined from electro-chemical polarization tests. And also, their fracture mechanisms were analyzed and compared, fractographyically. From their results, the fracture mechanical characteristics of it artificially degraded during long period in the distilled water, 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution and 12.7wt.%(1M) Na$_2$SO$_4$solution of 25, 60 and 90$\^{C}$ did not show distinguishable difference comparing with non-corroded one in regardless of temperature and degradation period. It means that degradation of the material by just surface corrosion does not remarkably affect to fatigue crack growth. On the other hand, the crack growth rates by corrosion fatigue increased due to activity increase of corrosive factors such as OH(sub)-,Cl(sup)- and SO$_4$(sup)- at the crack tip with temperature increase. Therefore, the crack growth rates by corrosion fatigue were more faster than that in air of the artificially degraded specimen due to the such difference of crack growth mechanism.

  • In this paper, the fatigue strength and the fatigue crack propagation behaviors of the round bar specimens which were spirally built up by welding and subsequently hardened by quenching were investigated. The material used was SF60 which was whdely employed in mechanical components, especially shafts. Fatigue tests were conducted at the fully reversed condition(R=-1) and axial and load control in the room temperature ahd air environment. The experimental results were expressed by both the range of stress intensity factor ($\Delta{K}$) and the effective range of stress intensity factor ($\Delta{K}_{eff}$). It was clarified that applying of quenching after the building up welding process improved the fatigue strength and the gatigue crack propagation property in the low range of $\Delta{K}$ of the built up round bar specimen.

  • The crack of concrete structure plays an important role in the durability and safety of structure. Therefore, the features such as width, length, and direction of that must be measured periodically. The conventional method of measurement of cracks is manually sketched, however. it takes a fairly long time and lacks quantitative objectivity. This study proposes the algorithm to extract and analyze cracks automatically. The proposed algorithm is composed of two sub-algorithms. The extraction algorithm includes elimination of effect due to light, binarization. and noise reduction. The analysis algorithm includes thinning process, labeling, and calculation of crack width, length, and direction. The test to demonstrate the algorithm is fulfilled using the images of cracks on real concrete surface.

  • Since the crack in the surface of the concrete acts as the main reason influencing the life span of the structure, regular inspections and maintenance are required. The sealing required for maintenance of the concrete surface is a method of repairing the crack in the surface in the beginning, and is effective in preventing additional cracks and expansion that occurs with time. However, sealing on large sized structures such as tall buildings or bottom parts of bridges are difficult to ensure safety of the workers due to inadequate working environments. Due to this reason, the importance of the need for sealing automation for the maintenance of large sized concrete structures is emerging. This study proposes two control methods to apply robot systems to the sealing of cracks on the bottom parts of concrete bridges. First is the method of automatically tracking the trajectory of cracks. The robot gets the trajectory of the cracks using video information obtained from cameras. Comparing the previous several points and new point, the next point can be estimated. Thus, the trajectory of the crack can be tracked automatically. The other method is sealing by maintaining steady force to the contacting surface. The concrete surface exposed to an external environment for a long time gets an irregular roughness. If robots are able to carry out sealing while maintaining a steady contact force on these rough surfaces, complete equal sealing can be maintained. In order to maintain this equal force, a force control method using impedance is proposed. This paper introduces two developed control methods to apply to sealing robots, and conducts a Lab Test and Field Test after applying to a robot. Based on the test results, opinions on the possibilities of field application of the robot applied with the control methods are presented.
