  • The objectives of this study were to identify engineering problems in the design and installation of cable logging operation that affects productivity through case study of actual logging sites, and to analyze associated productivity loss and increased cost. As a result of the study, when the geographic conditions and engineering safety of the site are not sufficiently considered, deflection of the cable line can not be secured. Hourly productivity of the operation decreased to 65% and the logging cost increased by more than two times compared to the productive yarding operation, which lowered overall efficiency of the operation. Thus, it is required to spread filed technologies that minimize unnecessary production cost incurred due to the in-efficient logging operations as well as secure work safety and efficiency to expand cable logging operation throughout the country.

  • The existing recovery technique using the logging technique in the client/sewer database system only administers the log as a whole in a server. This contains the logging record transmission cost on the transaction that is executed in each client potentially and increases network traffic. In this paper, the logging technique for redo-only log is suggested, which removes the redundant before-image and supports the client-based logging to eliminate the transmission cost of the logging record. Also, in case of a client crash, redo recovery through a backward client analysis log is performed in a self-recovering way. In case of a server crash, the after-image of the pages which needs recovery through simultaneous backward analysis log is only transmitted and redo recovery is done through the received after-image and backward analysis log. Also, we select the comparing model to estimate the performance about the proposed recovery technique. And we analyzed the redo and recovery time about the change of the number of client and the rate of updating operation.

  • Logging equipment and method have a major influence on harvesting productivity and cost. This study investigated the productivity and operational costs of tree-length cable yarding system using HAM300, a domestically developed tower yarder. We tested HAM300 for thinning operation in Pinus densiflora stands at Gangreung, Gangwon-do on April, 2014. To assess the productivity we conducted time study for each stage of the operation. When the average time/cycle was examined for each stage of the operation, the longest was for yarding (241 sec), followed by delimbing (237 sec), felling (153 sec), and processing (103 sec). Furthermore, productivity for felling was $8.6m^3/hr$, followed by delimbing ($5.1m^3/hr$), yarding ($3.5m^3/hr$), and processing ($8.1m^3/hr$). The total cost for the tree-length logging system was $58,446won/m^3$, of which the majority was incurred by the yarding cost at $46,217won/m^3$ (79.3%), whereas the lowest cost was for felling at $2,359won/m^3$ (4.1%). We suggest that it is necessary to foster specialized operators and provide training in operating the tower yarder thereby implementing efficient harvesting system resulting from low-cost yarding.

  • It is inadequate to compare operating costs between some logging machines with a low rate of utilization of them except the effect of operating time. The operating volume to maximize the utilization of the logging machines is different from each other, thus it is important to choose the proper logging machines and operating system according to the size of logging management. This study presents one of the methods to choose the economical optimum logging machines according to the operating volume to promote the economical efficiency of the machines. In order to go ahead with the Korean forestry mechanization plan, it should be considered which machine or operating system has the economical priority and if it can be suitable to the effect of wage increment.

  • In this study, the appropriate unit cost in grassland establishment was redeveloped by the grassland establishment method and work criteria. The grassland establishment method was divided into tillage establishment (all logging) and no-tillage establishment (all logging and partial logging). The price for the work criteria by the establishment method was presented for each permission/authorization and establishment work. In permission/authorization for grassland establishment, the cost of each work criteria was of environmental impact (small scale environmental impact) assessment, disaster impact assessment, cadastral serving fee, forest survey, and connection fee for control of mountainous districts. In establishment was of logging, cleaning/gruffing, plowing/soil preparation, seeding, fertilization, livestock manure compost, seed, herbicide, labor cost (fertilizer, seed and herbicide), soil consolidation, cattle trail, and fence. The unit cost of grassland establishment was KRW 115,894,212 for the tillage establishment, and KRW 110,281,572 and KRW 106,680,122 for the all and partial logging of the no-tillage establishment, respectively. The current study redeveloped the establishment method, work criteria, and estimation of the unit cost of grassland establishment. It can be usefully used to carry out government projects to support related to establishment and maintenance of grassland.

  • Compared with the previous recovery algorithms for causal message logging, Elnozahy's recovery algerian considerably reduces the number of stable storage accesses and enables live processes to execute their computations continuously while performing its recovery procedure. However, if causal message logging is used with asynchronous checkpointing, the state of the system may be inconsistent after having executed this algorithm in case of concurrent failures. In this paper, we show these inconsistent cases and propose a low-cost recovery algorithm for causal message logging to solve the problem. To ensure the system consistency, this algorithm allows the recovery leader to obtain recovery information from not only the live processes, but also the other recovering processes. Also, the proposed algorithm requires no extra message compared with Elnozahy's one and its additional overhead incurred by message piggybacking is significantly low. To demonstrate this, simulation results show that the first only increases about 1.0%$\sim$2.1% of the recovery information collection time compared with the latter.

  • The accurate determination of formation density and the physical properties of rocks is the most critical logging tasks which can be obtained using gamma-ray transport and detection tools. Though the simulation works published so far have considerably improved the knowledge of the parameters that govern the responses of the detectors in these tools, recent studies have found considerable differences between the results of using a conventional model of a homogeneous mixture of formation and fluid and an inhomogeneous fractured medium. It has increased concerns about the importance of the complexity of the model used for the medium in simulation works. In the present study, we have suggested two various models for the flow of the fluid in porous media and fractured rock to be used for logging purposes. For a typical gamma-gamma logging tool containing a 137Cs source and two NaI detectors, simulated by using the MCNPX code, a simplified porous (SP) model in which the formation is filled with elongated rectangular cubes loaded with either mineral material or oil was investigated. In this model, the oil directly reaches the top of the medium and the connection between the pores is not guaranteed. In the other model, the medium is a large 3-D matrix of 1 cm3 randomly filled cubes. The designed algorithm to fill the matrix sites is so that this realistic random (RR) model provides the continuum growth of oil flow in various disordered directions and, therefore, fulfills the concerns about modeling the rock textures consist of extremely complex pore structures. For an arbitrary set of oil concentrations and various formation materials, the response of the detectors in the logging tool has been considered as a criterion to assess the effect of modeling for the distribution of pores in the formation on simulation studies. The results show that defining a RR model for describing heterogeneities of a porous medium does not effectively improve the prediction of the responses of logging tools. Taking into account the computational cost of the particle transport in the complex geometries in the Monte Carlo method, the SP model can be satisfactory for gamma-gamma logging purposes.
