  • One of the widely accepted methods for evaluating the interior sound quality of automobiles is Articulation Index(AI). The AI actually measures the articulation level of the sound in the vehicle cabin as passengers talk to one another. In this study, the effect of two different absorption materials inside the cabin on AI has been investigated by ray-tracing method : one is firewall, the other is celling. It turns out that the back seat location is found to be strongly dependent on the type of absorption materials treated at the celling, since the sound absorbing area is different due to the location and the firewall is situated in the "Reverberation Radius". The proposed methdo could be used to improve the sound quality of automobiles at the design stge.sign stge.

  • In multi-location inventory systems, lost sales due to stockout decreases not only retailers' profit but also whole supply chain's profit. Transshipment between retailers has been considered to be a major solution to the stockout problem, and many supply chains implement transshipment coalition among retailers. However, in practical situations, retailers occasionally refuses to accept the transshipment requests, mainly because they concern the future stockout possibilities of their own. Thus, the objective of this research is to analyze the effect of retailers' interaction under the transshipment coalition environment based on the simulations, and to provide effective policies to promote retailers' transshipment cooperation. Policies using penalty and incentive scheme are proposed, and it is shown that using proposed policies both the retailers' and the headquarter's profit can be increased.

  • In wireless environment such as wireless LAN, proper location of wireless LAN AP allows us to take an effective coverage to provide good wireless communication service. To simulate wireless environment, FDTD formulation is introduced and Gaussian pulse injection in grid space is considered to be replaced wireless LAN AP. So structural effect corresponding to location of arbitrary obstacle must be considered, and its received gain is estimated. An obstacle in scattering field should be modeled to be conductor and concrete wall and its diffraction effect for some cross wall is evaluated between transmitter and receiver point.

  • Increasing interest in indoor air quality (IAQ) control has been found because of its serious effect on human health. To evaluate IAQ, thermal comfort in terms of temperature and velocity distributions of indoor air has to be analyzed in detail. Choice of location for installation of air-conditioner in a building will affect the performance of cooling effect and thermal comfort on the occupants, which in turn will affect the indoor air quality (IAQ) of the building. In this paper, we present a discussion on the proper location of the air-conditioner in order to obtain good thermal comfort for occupant of a typical bedroom in Macao. A set of carefully designed numerical experiments is run with the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software FLOVENT 3.2 [1]. Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved with finite volume technique and turbulence effects upon the mean flow characteristics is modeled with the k - & model. Assumption of steady state environment is made and only convective and conductive heat transfer from the occupant and air-conditioner are being concerned.

  • In the present paper, the effect of the location of stern planes on the flow entering the submarine propeller is studied numerically. These planes are mounted on three longitudinal positions on the submarine stern. The results are presented considering the flow field characteristics such as non-dimensional pressure coefficient, effective drag and lift forces on the stern plane, and the wake flow formed at the rear of the submarine where the propeller is located. In the present study, the submarine is studied at fully immersed condition without considering the free surface effects. The numerical results are verified with the experimental data. It is concluded that as the number of planes installed at the end of the stern section along the submarine model increases, the average velocity, width of the wake flow and its turbulence intensity formed at the end of the submarine enhance. This leads to a reduction in the non-uniformity of the inlet flow to the propulsion system.

  • An experimental study has been conducted to explore the behaviors of the radiative ignition of polymethylmetacrylate(PMMA) in a confined enclosure such as the ignition delay time, PMMA surface temperature, the ignition location and the ignition process. In addition, the effects of hot wall orientation on the ignition delay and PMMA surface temperature were studied. When the hot wall is located at the bottom, ignition delay time is the shortest. Ignition surface temperature becomes the lowest for the hot top wall case. These are due to buoyancy effect. Since the radiative heat flux of hot wall is rather lower than laser source, the ignition is considered to be controlled by the mixing process. Therefore, the ignition location, where appropriate mixture of fuel and oxygen exists, occurs near the hot wall. The flame propagates along the hot wall where there exists sufficient oxygen.

  • This study is aimed to evaluate a tunneling effect in association with the measurement of sound transmission loss. Based on the formulation for sound transmission loss of a finite panel in the presence of tunnel, variations of the sound transmission loss with parameters such as the location of panel and tunnel depth are investigated. It can be seen that differences in the sound transmission loss are quite evident below coincidence frequency and the sound transmission loss greatly depends on panel location in the tunnel. In comparison with the case without a tunnel, maximum difference occurs in the case where the panel is placed on the center of the tunnel and the flushing with the end of the tunnel gives the better estimation of transmission loss.

  • Generally, countermeasures for the train-induced vibration are divided into the measures at the source, propagation path and receiving object. Among these measures the countermeasure at the source location is the most active and effective one in the field of railroad. In this study, the effectiveness of each anti-vibration measures at the track(source location) such as elastic rail fastener, ballast mat were evaluated through the comparison of acceleration level, insertion loss at the installed locations of each measures. As result of field measurement of vibration at the railroad track supporting structures and on the ground nearby the structures, elastic rail fastener showed vibration reduction effect of 4.5 ∼7.3㏈ on the concrete slab, 1.6∼3.7㏈ on the ground with the train operation speed of 80km/hr. In the case of ballast mat, the vibration reduction effect at the concrete slab and on the ground were 11.9∼13.3㏈ and 6.1∼7.6㏈, respectively.

  • The present study dictates the behavior of shear wall under a seismic event in slender high rise buildings, and studies the effect of height, location and distribution of shear wall in slender high rise building with and without boundary elements induced by the effect of an earthquake. Shear walls are located at the sides of the building, to counter the earthquake forces. This study is carried out in a 12 storeys building using SAP2000 software. The obtained results disclose that the behavior of the structure is definitely affected by the height and location of shear walls in slender high rise building. The stresses are concentrated at the limit between the shear wall region and the upper non shear wall especially for shear walls without columns. Displacements are doubled between the shear wall region and the upper non shear wall especially for shear walls without columns.
