  • We present a survey of contributions that defined the nature and extent of robust statistics for the last 50 years. From the pioneering work of Tukey, Huber, and Hampel that focused on robust location parameter estimation, we presented various generalizations of these estimation procedures that cover a wide variety of models and data analysis methods. Among these extensions, we present linear models, clustered and dependent observations, times series data, binary and discrete data, models for spatial data, nonparametric methods, and forward search methods for outliers. We also present the current interest in robust statistics and conclude with suggestions on the possible future direction of this area for statistical science.

  • One of the widely accepted methods for evaluating the interior sound quality of automobiles is Articulation Index(AI). The AI actually measures the articulation level of the sound in the vehicle cabin as passengers talk to one another. In this study, the effect of two different absorption materials inside the cabin on AI has been investigated by ray-tracing method : one is firewall, the other is celling. It turns out that the back seat location is found to be strongly dependent on the type of absorption materials treated at the celling, since the sound absorbing area is different due to the location and the firewall is situated in the "Reverberation Radius". The proposed methdo could be used to improve the sound quality of automobiles at the design stge.sign stge.

  • Many rubber products are used in industrial products such as various hoses, rubber belts and oil seals etc. Especially, more then 200 rubber parts are used in the automobile, but design technology of these is largely dependent on Held experiences. These methods brought about too much time and cost in the developing procedures. However, with the help of recent rapid development of non-liner computer analysis, we can develop new sound products at low cost. Therefore in this study, optimizations of design variables such as location and number of gate in order to develop CLIP rubber product made of EPDM were performed by CAE in which Cross-WLF equations are adopted. The validity of proposed variables is evaluated by comparison with real forming results.

  • In this study, the leak detection technique of pressure vessel by using acoustic emission(AE) signal is suggested experimentally. The leak of pressure vessel is located at the welding line due to welding defects. we measured the AE signal using Rl5I sensor, and examined the AE parameters in leak condition. It is investigated that the mean value of AE signal is dependent on leak source location. So the absolute mean value of AE signal is adopted as dominant AE parameter. We proposed leak detection algorithm using AE signal mean value for monitoring the leak source location.

  • In this study, a spatial location-allocation model of center villages (SLAMCV) was developed for selecting spatial center villages and allocating their rear villages. In SLAMCV, rural space was considered as a network with villages for nodes and roads for connecting lines. For quantification of residents’ accessibilities in the network, a disutility index (DUI) was developed and used, which is dependent upon travelling distance between the center and its hinter villages, design vehicle speed in connecting road and population of hinter villages. SLAMCV was verified to Christaller’s hexagonal hierachical settlement system to test the theoretical reasonability and computing algorithm of the model.

  • The present study addresses a computational work to investigate the influence of a turbulent wake flow on the pressure recovery of a subsonic diffuser. The turbulent wake is generated by a cylinder with a small diameter, which is installed at the inlet of a 2-dimensional diffuser. Computation are applied to three-dimensional steady Navier-Stokes equations. The fully implicit finite volume scheme is used to discretize the governing equations. The computational results are qualitatively well compared to the experimental results. The results show that the pressure recovery of the subsonic diffuser is dependent on the diameter and location of cylinder. It is found that a certain diameter and location of the cylinder to generate the turbulent wake give a better pressure recovery, compared with no cylinder flow.

  • A computational study is performed to clarify the characteristics of supersonic moist air jet issuing from a simple sonic nozzle. The effects of the initial supersaturation on the Mach disk diameter and location, the barrel shock wave and jet boundary structures are investigated in details. The axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations, coupled with droplet growth equation, are solved using a third-order MUSCL type TVD finite-difference scheme. It is found that the Mach disk diameter increases with an increase in relative humidity of moist air. while its location is not significantly dependent on the relative humidity. As the relative humidity increases, the barrel shock wave and jet boundary are more expanded due to the local static pressure rise of nonequilibrium condensation.

The design technology of these parts is largely dependent on field experience, which leads to lengthy and expensive developing procedures. However, with the help of recent developments in nonlinear computer analysis, new rubber products can be developed at low cost. In this study, rubber injection molding design variables, such as location and number of gates, were optimized using computer-aided engineering with the cross-WLF equation to produce CLIP rubber products made from ethylene propylene diene monomer(EPDM). The validity of the proposed design was evaluated by comparison with actual forming results.
