Donghae city is one of the most representative cement industrial city in Korea. The area is faced with the East Sea to the East and with high montane region of Tae-Back mountain range to the West. Many pollutant sources of air pollution are located near the coast, but the largest point sources of the region are located at the bottom of the mountain area in Donghae city. The local wind is highly affected by local topography and plays an important role in transport and dispersion of contaminants from the pollution sources. This study was designed to evaluate enhancement of MM5 predictions by using Four Dimensional Data Assimilation (FDDA), the SONDE data and the national meteorological station, data only. The alternative meteorological fields predicted with and without FDDA were used to simulate spatial and temporal variations of NOx in combined with Atmospheric Dispersion Models (CALPUFF). For the modeling domain, the alternative meteorological fields with 1.1 km spatial resolution were interpolated to the CALMET with 0.5 km resolution. The vertical layers set to have 35 and 12 layers for MM5 and CALPUFF, respectively. MM5 with the FDDA did not resulted in significant improvement of meteorological field prediction in Donghae region, which is primarily because of complex geography and wind scheme. The result of CALPUFF, however, showed reduction of uncertainty errors by using the interpolation scheme of the actual measurement data.

We focused on improvement in simulation of wind fields for the complex coastal area. Local Analysis and Prediction System(LAPS) was used as a data assimilation method to improve initial conditions. Case studies of different LAPS inputs were performed to compare improvement of wind fields. Five cases have been employed : I) non data assimilation, II) all available data, III) AWS, buoy, QuikSCAT, IV) AWS, buoy, wind profiler, V) AWS, buoy, AMEDAS. Data assimilation can supplement insufficiency of the mesoscale model which does not represent detailed terrain effect and small scale atmospheric flow fields. Result assimilated all available data showed a good agreement to the observations rather than other cases and estimated veil the local meteorological characteristics including sea breeze and up-slope winds. Result using wind profiler data was the next best thing. This implies that data assimilation with many high-resolution sounding data could contribute to the improvements of good initial condition in the complex coastal area. As a result, these indicated that effective data assimilation process and application of the selective LAPS inputs played an important role in simulating wind fields accurately in a complex area.

The flow apportioning algorithms with digital elevation models have been developed to reflect reasonable flow divergence properties but they showed several defects related to the connectivity of channel cells, various divergence features along to local topography and channel cells' size etc. Topographic data used by existing flow apportioning algorithms are flow accumulation area and local slope. However, the size and location of channel cells which play the dominant role in the flow pathway were not properly considered. Therefore, a new flow apportioning algorithm considering various flow divergence characteristics in the complicate terrain is proposed. The GA optimization scheme is used to represent the location and scale of the channel pixel. Improved result can be obtained by using both a new flow apportioning algorithm and optimization.
The purpose of this study is to ascertain how the level of resolution of land cover data affects on the local distribution and diffusion of fine dust. the CALPUFF model, which considers the spatio-temporal terrain conditions and changes in weather conditions, was used to estimate PM10 concentration in the Pyeongchon, Anyang-si, Gyeonggi-do. Three different resolutions of land cover data including 20 m, 50 m, and 100 m were compared as the input of the modeling. Using higher resolution land cover data (20 m), the wind speed of the simulated region was the largest and the PM10 concentration was the lowest. Through this study, we confirm that the resolution level of land-use/cover data can affect the local distribution and diffusion of fine dust, which can be detected by CALPUFF. Therefore, when using CALPUFF to simulate fine dust in the future, it can be suggested that checking the impact on spatial resolution according to the form of land cover in advance and proceeding with the simulation can achieve mote accurate results.
The present study applied an atmospheric flow field model in Gwangyang-Bay which can predict local sea/land breezes formed in a complex terrain lot the development of a model that can predict short term concentration of air pollution. Estimated values from the conduct of the atmospheric flow field were used to evaluate and compare with observation data of the meteorological stations in Yeosu and the Yeosu airport, and the effect of micrometeorology of surround region by the coastal area reclamation was predicted by using the estimated values, Simulation results, a nighttime is appeared plainly land breezes of the Gwangyang-bay direction according to a mountain wind that formed in the Mt. of Baekwooun, Mt. of Youngchui. Land winds is formed clockwise circulation in the north, clockwise reverse direction in the south with Gangyang-bay as the center. Compared with model and observation value, Temperature is tend to appeared some highly simulation value in the night, observation value in the daytime in two sites all, but it is veil accorded generally, the pattern of one period can know very the similarity. And also, wind speed and wind direction is some appeared the error of observation value and calculation results in crossing time of the land wind and sea land, it can see that reproducibility is generally good, is very appeared the change land wind in the nighttime, the change of sea wind in the daytime. And also, according to change of the utilization coefficient of soil before and after development with Gwangyang-Bay area as the center. Temperature after development was high $0.55\sim0.67^{\circ}C$ in the 14 hoots, also was tend to appear lowly $0.10\sim0.22^{\circ}C$ in the 02 hours, the change of u, v component is comparatively tend to reduced sea wind and land wind, it is affected ascending air current and frictional power of the earth surface according to inequality heating of the generation of earth surface.
Despite many criticisms that topographic survey data for the official land price appraising collected annually using field survey method might be inaccurate, there is only few concrete research on it. This paper investigated whether the topographic survey data collected by a local government using field survey method is consistent with the data analyzed using the digital elevation model to examine its accuracy. The accuracy analysis indicated that 324 out of 1537 lots of land have inconsistent results which means the ratio of inconsistency is 17.36%. Among 11 areas studied, five had the inconsistency ratio above 20% while the worst one had 38.71%. The inconsistency ratio is generally higher for the rough terrain with irregular slope and high altitude while it is relatively lower for the terrain with smooth landform. The analysis results imply that there are limitations in investigating the topology by field survey method. Therefore, the official land price appraising policy should set precise criterion and change over to highly accurate geographic information analysis method to effectively and accurately examine topology, given the fact that the topology of the Republic of Korea has complicated features with irregular slope and altitude.

Recently, as a part of NGIS project, cultural-assets digital map is produced by cultural properties administration and local autonomous entities. Cultural-assets unified GIS(Geographic Information System) is essential to cultural properties managers md other organizations which are executing land related business for appling it at planning stage. With explosive national land developments, it has been obligated to implement surface survey by the cultural properties protection Art. In this paper, the authors used the district of Sachon city and made 3D terrain model using digital map which is made of 1/5000 stale. Moreover, the authors improved to RDBMS(Relational Database Management System) structure and remodeled the existing DB design in detail, and also tried recovery of past sea level, based on researches about the water level of southern area. By recover past sea level. the shell mound, apart from lever is actually near lever at past, and it make sure its nature. The authors suggested to realize shape and kind of remains which have 3D information of accuracy and actualization from surface-surveying to excavation.
An efficient large eddy simulation algorithm is used to compute surface pressure distributions on an eleven story (target) building on the NIST campus. Local meteorology, neighboring buildings, topography and large vegetation (trees) all play an important part in determining the flows and therefore the pressures experienced by the target. The wind profile imposed at the upstream surface of the computational domain follows a power law with an exponent representing a suburban terrain. This profile accounts for the flow retardation due to friction from the surface of the earth, but does not include fluctuations that would naturally occur in this flow. The effect of neighboring buildings on the time dependent surface pressures experienced by the target is examined. Comparison of the pressure fluctuations on the single target building alone with those on the target building in situ show that, owing to vortices shed by the upstream buildings, fluctuations are larger when such buildings are present. Even when buildings are lateral to or behind the target, the pressure disturbances generate significantly different flows around this building. A simple grid-free mathematical model of a tree is presented in which the trunk and the branches are each represented by a collection of spherical particles strung together like beads on a string. The drag from the tree, determined as the sum of the drags of the component particles, produces an oscillatory, spreading wake of slower fluid, suggesting that the behavior of trees as wind breakers can be modeled usefully.

Northern Gyeonggi Province(NGP), consisting of 3 counties, is the northernmost region in South Korea adjacent to the de-militarized zone with North Korea. To supplement insufficient spatial coverage of official climate data and climate atlases based on those data, high-resolution digital climate models(DCM) were prepared to support weather- related activities of residents in NGP Monthly climate data from 51 synoptic stations across both North and South Korea were collected for 1981-2000. A digital elevation model(DEM) for this region with 30m cell spacing was used with the climate data for spatially interpolating daily maximum and minimum temperatures, solar irradiance, and precipitation based on relevant topoclimatological models. For daily minimum temperature, a spatial interpolation scheme accommodating the potential influences of cold air accumulation and the temperature inversion was used. For daily maximum temperature estimation, a spatial interpolation model loaded with the overheating index was used. Daily solar irradiances over sloping surfaces were estimated from nearby synoptic station data weighted by potential relative radiation, which is the hourly sum of relative solar intensity. Precipitation was assumed to increase with the difference between virtual terrain elevation and the DEM multiplied by an observed rate. Validations were carried out by installing an observation network specifically for making comparisons with the spatially estimated temperature pattern. Freezing risk in January was estimated for major fruit tree species based on the DCMs under the recurrence intervals of 10, 30, and 100 years, respectively. Frost risks at bud-burst and blossom of tree flowers were also estimated for the same resolution as the DCMs.
This study assesses forest fire susceptibility in Gangwon-do, South Korea, which hosts the largest forested area in the nation and constitutes ~21% of the country's forested land. With 81% of its terrain forested, Gangwon-do is particularly susceptible to wildfires, as evidenced by the fact that seven out of the ten most extensive wildfires in Korea have occurred in this region, with significant ecological and economic implications. Here, we analyze 480 historical wildfire occurrences in Gangwon-do between 2003 and 2019 using 17 predictor variables of wildfire occurrence. We utilized three machine learning algorithms—random forest, logistic regression, and support vector machine—to construct wildfire susceptibility prediction models and identify the best-performing model for Gangwon-do. Forest and soil map data were integrated as important indicators of wildfire susceptibility and enhanced the precision of the three models in identifying areas at high risk of wildfires. Of the three models examined, the random forest model showed the best predictive performance, with an area-under-the-curve value of 0.936. The findings of this study, especially the maps generated by the models, are expected to offer important guidance to local governments in formulating effective management and conservation strategies. These strategies aim to ensure the sustainable preservation of forest resources and to enhance the well-being of communities situated in areas adjacent to forests. Furthermore, the outcomes of this study are anticipated to contribute to the safeguarding of forest resources and biodiversity and to the development of comprehensive plans for forest resource protection, biodiversity conservation, and environmental management.
