Purpose : Simple hysterectomy is not a standard surgery for invasive cervical carcinoma. This study was performed to investigate the efficacy of radiotherapy following simple hysterectomy in the invasive cervical cancer. Materials and Methods : Retrospective analysis was done for 19 patients with invasive cervical carcinoma who were treated with radiotherapy following simple hysterectomy from April 1989 to December 1993 The median a9e of patients was 47 years old. Patients were treated with external beam radiation therapy alone (17) or external beam radiation therapy plus intra vaginal ovoid irradiation (2). The median follow up period was 46 months. Results : The 4 year overall survival rate was $75\%$. The 4 rear local control rate was $89\%$. Two patients had recurred at the locoregional and distant sites, and another two patients at distant sites. Conclusion : We confirmed that radiotherapy is the adequate treatment modality for patients with invasive cervical cancer who underwent simple hysterectomy.
Purpose: We investigated the role of radiotherapy (RT) for pancreatobiliary neuroendocrine tumors (PB-NETs). Materials and Methods: We identified 9 patients with PB-NETs who received RT between January 2005 and March 2012. Of these 9 patients, 4 were diagnosed with NETs in the pancreas and 5 were diagnosed with NETs in the gallbladder. All patients received RT to the primary tumor or resection bed with a median total irradiation dose of 50.4 Gy, with or without chemotherapy. Results: The tumor response rate and tumor control rate in the RT field were 60% and 100 %, respectively. All 4 patients who underwent surgery had no evidence of disease in the RT field. Of the 5 patients who received RT to the primary gross tumor, 1 had complete response, 2 had partial response, and 2 had stable disease in the RT field. The median time to progression was 11 months. Of the 9 patients, four patients had no progression, and 5 patients had progression of disease (locoregional, 2; distant, 2; locoregional/distant, 1). Of the 4 patients without progression, 3 were treated with RT in adjuvant or neoadjuvant setting, and one received RT to primary tumor. One patient experienced radiation-induced duodenitis at 3 months after concurrent chemoradiation without treatment-related mortality. Conclusion: RT can yield local control for advanced PB-NETs. RT should be considered an essential part of multimodality treatment in management of advanced PB-NETs.
With the introduction of X-rays of higher energy that have higher penetrability, it has become possible to treat the deep-seated tumor with increased local control rate. But at the same time it has incrased the damage to the deep seated organs, especially to the lung which is known to be the less radiotolerable tissue in the body. This study analyses the 66 patients who were exposed to the irradiation of the lung, and examines the development of radiation pneumonitis and its related factors. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1, The 66 patients were consisted of 40 cases of lung cancer, 15 cases of breast cancer and 11 cases of mediastinal tumors. There were 37 males and 29 females with the male to female ratio 1.3: 1. A male to female ratio in the lung cancer was 3: 1. 2. Among 66 patients, 26 patients $(39\%)$ developed the radiographical changes of acute radiation pneumonitis and 13 out of 26 patients $(50\%)$ showed the clinical features of acute radiation pneumonitis. 3. The onest of acute radiation pneumonitis ranged from 10 days to 6 months after the completion of radiotherapy. 4. There was a statistically significant close relationship between the development of radiation pneumonitis and the radiation dose. 5. As the irradiated lung volume increased, the development of radiation pneumonitis increased. But the statistical significance was not strong. 6. The increased incidence of radiation pneumonitis was observed when the chemotherapy was given before or concomittantly with radiotherapy. 7 There was no significant correlation between the development of radiation pneumonitis and the age, smoking and the presence of underlying lung disease.
Solar membrane steam generation is a very promising technology that can harvest purified water from seawater or wastewater during the current danger of running out of pure water. However, solar Membrane steam generation had direct contact with water, making it difficult to increase the efficient amount of evaporation. Here, we propose solar membrane steam generator composed of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and graphene oxide (GO) and improved evaporation through wettability control in part throughout the water-absorbing membrane. Wettability control has shown significant improvements in thermal localization and temperature rise in the area of heat exchange with sunlight. The evaporator has an evaporation rate of 1.54 kg m-2 h-1 under 1 sun irradiation. The results showed that Solar membrane steam evaporation can effectively harvest pure water through an increase in evaporation.

Regional odontodysplasia(ROD) is relatively rare localized developmental anomaly of tooth formation in which hard tissue is affected. The maxilla is typically affected than the mandible, and especially the maxillary left quadrant is the most commonly involved. Females are affected twice as often as males, and there is no association with race. Its etiology remains undetermined, but local circulatory disorders, somatic mutations, virus infections, local trauma, hyperpyrexia, irradiation, metabolic disturbances, and hereditary transmission are considered as possible etiologic factors. The affected teeth are likely to be small, hypoplastic, brown, and grooved. Eruption failure or delay is frequently seen as well as abscess or fistulae formation in absence of caries. Radiographically, there is a lack of contrast between the enamel and dentin, both of which are less radiopaque than unaffected counterparts. Moreover, enamel and dentin layers are thin, giving the teeth a “ghost-like appearance”. The pulp chambers and canals are large, the roots seem like to be short and indistinct. A 2-year-3-month old boy came to the department of pediatric dentistry, Yonsei University, with the chief complaint of delayed eruption and abnormal tooth shape on the lower left quadrant. He was diagnosed as regional odontodysplasia based on the clinical and radiographic findings.

Objective : The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the outcome of gamma knife radiosurgery (GKRS) and/or whole brain radiation therapy (WBRT) for the treatment of small cell lung carcinoma (SCLC) metastasis to the brain. Methods : From 2000 to 2010, 50 patients underwent GKRS for metastatic brain lesions originating from SCLC. Among these patients, 11 received prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) before the development of metastatic lesions (PCI group), and GKRS was performed as an initial treatment for newly diagnosed lesions in 12 patients who had not received PCI (primary GKRS group). In addition, GKRS was performed as a salvage treatment for progressive lesions after WBRT in 27 patients (salvage GKRS group). The medical records and imaging data of all patients were retrospectively analyzed. Results : The overall survival of the 50 patients was 20.8 months (range 1-53) after the diagnosis of primary tumor and 12.0 months (range 1-47) after the development of cerebral metastasis. Median survival after GKRS was 4.8 months (range 1-15) in the PCI group, 4.6 months (range 0-18) in the primary GKRS group, and 7.6 months (range 0-33) in the salvage GKRS group. Further treatment for progressive lesions after GKRS was necessary in 15 patients, after a mean interval of 3.8 months. Causes of death were systemic organ failure in 15 patients, deterioration of neurological state in 13 patients, and unknown or combined causes in 16 patients. The local control rate of the lesions treated with GKRS was 76.4% (decreased in 13 patients and stable in 16 patients at the final imaging follow-up (mean 5.60 months). Conclusion : GKRS is an effective local treatment for brain metastasis from SCLC both as an initial treatment for newly diagnosed lesions after PCI and as a salvage treatment for recurrent or progressive lesions. However, the survival benefit is not significant because most patients die of systemic multi-organ failure with a short life expectancy.

During a ten-year period from 1978 through 1987, 44 patients with T2NOMO glottic cancer were treated with radical radiation therapy at the Yonsei University Medical Center. Forty-two patients had a minimum follow-up of 3 years, and $81\%$ had at least five years of follow-up. Patients were staged according to the AJCC system. Forty-two patients have been analyzed in detail with respect to two variables: the status of vocal cord mobility and the degree of local extension of the disease. Five-year local recurrence free survival rates were as follows: All 42 patients, $53.3\%$ patients with normal vocal cord mobility (n =18), $69.1\%$ versus patients with impaired vocal cord mobility (n=24), $43.4\%$(p<0.05); patients with subglottic extension (n=15), $36.7$ versus patients without subglottic extension (n=29), $61.9\%$ (p<0.05). The most favorable Prognostic group included the patients with normal mobility without subglottic extension (n=14), $83.1\%$. On the basis of this analysis, we confirmed the presence of heterogeneity in T2NOMO glottic cancer This study indicates that further randomized controlled trials are warranted to evaluate.

Purpose: To investigate the treatment results' and patterns of failure according to the pathologic type of the parotid malignancy who were treated with radical sugery and postoperative radiation therapy. Materials and Methods: Fifty-two patients with various type of the parotid malignancy, who were treated with combined radical surgery and post-operative irradiation at Yonsei Cancer Center, between 1981 and 1995, were retrospectively reviewed after completion treatment, all but one patients were follow up with the median follow up period of 49 months. Results: We found that pathologically confirmed neck node metastasis rate was 28.8% all case and level II was most common site. Overall failure rate was 26.9%, local recurrence rate was 13.5%, node failure rate was 7.7%, and distant failure rate was 5.8%. Five-year disease free survival rate was 70.9%, and overall survival rate was 73.8%. Recurrence rate was low in adenoid cystic carcinoma and acinic cell carcinoma. However distant metastasis was very high in undifferentiated carcinoma. Local recurrence was main pattern of failure in mucoepidermoid carcinoma and nodal failure was frequently observed in adenocarcinoma. Conclusion: Individualized treatment plan may be required to improve a treatment outcome by pathologic subtype of the parotid malignancy.

Purpose: Hypofractionated radiotherapy (RT) is becoming a new standard in postoperative treatment of patients with early stage breast cancer after breast conservation surgery. However, data on hypofractionation in patients with advanced stage disease who undergo mastectomy followed by local and regional nodal irradiation (RNI) is lacking. In this retrospective study, we report late-term effects of 3 weeks post-mastectomy hypofractionated local and RNI with two-dimensional (2D) technique in patients with stage II and III breast cancer. Methods: Between January 1990 and December 2007, 1,770 women with breast cancer who were given radical treatment with mastectomy, systemic therapy and RT at least 10 years ago were included. RT dose was 35 Gy/15 fractions/3 weeks to chest wall by two tangential fields and 40 Gy in same fractions to supraclavicular fossa (SCF) and internal mammary nodes (IMNs). SCF and IMNs dose was prescribed at dmax and 3 cm depth, respectively. Chemotherapy and hormonal therapy was given in 64% and 74% patients, respectively. Late-term toxicities were assessed with the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) scores and LENT-SOMA scales (the Late Effects Normal Tissue Task Force-Subjective, Objective, Management, Analytic scales). Results: Mean age was 48 years (range, 19 to 75 years). Median follow-up was 12 years (range, 10 to 27 years). Moderate/marked arm/shoulder pain was reported by 254 (14.3%) patients. Moderate/marked shoulder stiffness was reported by 219 (12.3%) patients. Moderate/marked arm edema was seen in 131 (7.4%) patients. Brachial plexopathy was not seen in any patient. Rib fractures were noted in 6 (0.3%) patients. Late cardiac and lung toxicity was seen in 29 (1.6%) and 23 (1.3%) patients, respectively. Second malignancy developed in 105 (5.9%) patients. Conclusion: RNI with 40 Gy/15 fractions/3 weeks hypofractionation with 2D technique seems safe and comparable to historical data of conventional fractionation (ClinicalTrial.gov Registration No. NCT04175821).

Purpose: This study was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of postoperative radiotherapy, and to investigate the prognostic factors for FIGO stages IB-IIB cervical cancer patients who were treated with simple hysterectomy, or who had high-risk factors following radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection. Materials and Methods: Between March 1986 and December 1998, 58 patients, with FIGO stages IB-IIB cervical cancer were included in this study. The indications for postoperative radiation therapy were based on the pathological findings, including lymph node metastasis, positive surgical margin, parametrial extension, lymphovascular invasion, invasion of more than half the cervical stroma, uterine extension and the incidental finding of cervix cancer fellowing simple hysterectomy. All patients received external pelvic radiotherapy, and 5 patients, received an additional intracavitary radiation therapy. The radiation dose from the external beam to the whole pelvis was $40\~50$ Gy. Vagina cuff Irradiation was peformed, after completion of the external beam irradiation, at a low-dose rate of Cs-137, with the total dose of $4488\~4932$ chy (median: 4500 chy) at 5 mm depth from the vagina surface. The median follow-up period was 44 months ($15\~108$ months). Results: The 5-yr actuarial local control rate, distant free survival and disease-free survival rate were $98\%,\;95\%\;and\;94\%$, respectively. A univariate analysis of the clinical and pathological parameters revealed that the clinical stage (p=0.0145), status of vaginal resection margin (p=0.0002) and parametrial extension (p=0.0001) affected the disease-free survival. From a multivariate analysis, only a parametrial extension independently influenced the disease-free survival. Five patients ($9\%$) experienced Grade 2 late treatment-related complications, such as radiation proctitis (1 patient), cystitis (3 patients) and lymphedema of the leg (1 patient). No patient had grade 3 or 4 complications. Conclusion: Our results indicate that postoperative radiation therapy can achieve good local control and survival rates for patients with stages IB-IIB cervical cancer, treated with a simple hysterectomy, as well as for those treated with a radical hysterectomy, and with unfavorable pathological findings. The prognostic factor for disease-free survival was invasion of the parametrium. The prognosic factor identified in this study for treatment failure can be used as a selection criterion for the combined treatment of radiation and che motherapy.
