  • This paper proposes an efficient motion compensation algorithm for video sequences with brightness variations. In the proposed algorithm, the brightness variation parameters are estimated and local motions are compensated. To detect the frame with large brightness variations, we employ the frame classification based on the cross entropy between histograms of two successive frames, which can reduce the computational redundancy. Simulation results show that the proposed method yields a higher peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) than that of the conventional methods, with a low computational load, when the video scene contains large brightness changes.

  • In this paper, we propose an effective dynamic range compression (DRC) method of infrared images. A histogram of infrared images has narrow dynamic range compared to visible images. Hence, it is important to apply the effective DRC algorithm for high performance of an infrared image analysis. The proposed algorithm for high dynamic range divides an infrared image into the overlapped blocks and calculates Shannon's entropy of overlapped blocks. After that, we classify each block according to the value of entropy and apply adaptive histogram modification method each overlapped block. We make an intensity mapping function through result of the adaptive histogram modification method which is using standard-deviation and maximum value of histogram of classified blocks. Lastly, in order to reduce block artifact, we apply hanning window to the overlapped blocks. In experimental result, the proposed method showed better performance of dynamic range compression compared to previous algorithms.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the periodicity of the lower extremity joint flexion/extension angle to compare the local stability between young and elderly women during walking on a treadmill. Method: Eighteen young women (mean $age=21.2{\pm}1.6y$; mean $mass=57.1{\pm}6.1kg$; mean $height=1.61{\pm}0.04m$) and 18 elderly women (mean $age=66.4{\pm}1.2y$; mean $mass=55.4{\pm}8.3kg$; mean $height=1.56{\pm}0.04m$) participated in this study. Approximate entropy (ApEn) was used to determine the periodicity in the lower limb joint angles. Results: The ApEn values of the two groups were statistically greater in the surrogate data test than in the original time series data (p<.05). The periodicity of the hip and ankle flexion/extension angles decreased in the elderly women group compared with the young women group (p<.05). The periodicity of the lower extremity joint flexion/extension angle showed that the ankle joint increased dominatingly in both groups (p<.05); the hip joint decreased compared with the knee joint in the young women group; and the knee joint decreased compared with the hip joint in the elderly women group (p<.05). Conclusion: These results suggest that the lower extremity joint flexion/extension angles of the young and elderly women during walking contained random noises as well as biological signals. In addition, the differences in the periodicity in the lower extremity joint between the young and elderly women may provide some insight in predicting potential falls and be used as a characteristic indicator for determining local stability in elderly women during walking.

  • Spline chirplet transform and local maximum synchrosqueezing are introduced to present a novel structural instantaneous frequency (IF) identification method named local maximum synchrosqueezing spline chirplet transform (LMSSSCT). Namely spline chirplet transform (SCT), a transform is firstly introduced based on classic chirplet transform and spline interpolated kernel function. Applying SCT in association with local maximum synchrosqueezing, the LMSSSCT is then proposed. The index of accuracy and Rényi entropy show that LMSSSCT outperforms the other time-frequency analysis (TFA) methods in processing analytical signals, especially in the presence of noise. Numerical examples of a Duffing nonlinear system with single degree of freedom and a two-layer shear frame structure with time-varying stiffness are used to verify the effectiveness of structural IF identification. Moreover, a nonlinear supported beam structure test is conducted and the LMSSSCT is utilized for structural IF identification. Numerical simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the presented LMSSSCT can effectively identify the IFs of nonlinear structures and time-varying structures with good accuracy and stability.

  • With the mobile traffic in the network increases exponentially, multi-access edge computing (MEC) develops rapidly. MEC servers are deployed geo-distribution, which serve many mobile terminals locally to improve users' QoE (Quality of Experience). When the cache space of a MEC server is full, how to replace the cached videos is an important problem. The problem is also called the cache replacement problem, which becomes more complex due to the dynamic video popularity and the varied video sizes. Therefore, we proposed a new cache replacement scheme based on local video popularity and video size to solve the cache replacement problem of MEC servers. First, we built a local video popularity model, which is composed of a popularity rise model and a popularity attenuation model. Furthermore, the popularity attenuation model incorporates a frequency-dependent attenuation model and a frequency-independent attenuation model. Second, we formulated a utility based on local video popularity and video size. Moreover, the weights of local video popularity and video size were quantitatively analyzed by using the information entropy. Finally, we conducted extensive simulation experiments based on the proposed scheme and some compared schemes. The simulation results showed that our proposed scheme performs better than the compared schemes in terms of hit rate, average delay, and server load under different network configurations.

  • Image restoration technique using dual sensor is presented in this paper. Digital Radiography image (1024xlO24) is obtained by conventional resolution sensor. We also obtain local DR image data by high resolution sensor. Two dimensional maximum entropy power spectrum estimation (2-D ME PSE) is applied to low resolution image and high resolution image for the purpose of the power spectrum estimation of each image. A class of linear algebraic restoration filter, parametric projection filter (PPF), is derived from the power spectrums of each image. It is shown that the noise energy may be considerably reduced through the PPF.

  • Based on the quincunx sub-sampling grid, the New Interleaved Hierarchical INTerpolation (NIHINT) method is recognized as a superior pyramid data structure for the lossless and progressive coding of natural images. In this paper, we propose a new image interpolation algorithm, Edge Adaptive Hierarchical INTerpolation (EAHINT), for a further reduction in the entropy of interpolation errors. We compute the local variance of the causal context to model the strength of a local edge around a target pixel and then apply three statistical decision rules to classify the local edge into a strong edge, a weak edge, or a medium edge. According to these local edge types, we apply an interpolation method to the target pixel using a one-directional interpolator for a strong edge, a multi-directional adaptive weighting interpolator for a medium edge, or a non-directional static weighting linear interpolator for a weak edge. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a better compression bit rate than the NIHINT method for lossless image coding. It is shown that the compression bit rate is much better for images that are rich in directional edges and textures. Our algorithm also shows better rate-distortion performance and visual quality for progressive image transmission.

  • IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol standard, DCF(CSMA/CA), is originally designed to ensure the fair channel access between mobile nodes sharing the local wireless channel. It has been, however, revealed that some misbehavior nodes transmit more data than other nodes through artificial means in hot spot area spreaded rapidly. The misbehavior nodes may modify the internal process of their MAC protocol or interrupt the MAC procedure of normal nodes to achieve more data transmission. This problem has been referred to as a selfish node problem and almost literatures has proposed methods of analyzing the MAC procedures of all mobile nodes to detect the selfish nodes. However, these kinds of protocol analysis methods is not effective at detecting all kinds of selfish nodes enough. This paper address this problem of detecting selfish node using Tsallis-Entropy which is a kind of statistical method. Tsallis-Entropy is a criteria which can show how much is the density or deviation of a probability distribution. The proposed algorithm which operates at a AP node of wireless LAN extracts the probability distribution of data interval time for each node, then compares the one with a threshold value to detect the selfish nodes. To evaluate the performance of proposed algorithm, simulation experiments are performed in various wireless LAN environments (congestion level, how selfish node behaviors, threshold level) using ns2. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves higher successful detection rate.

  • We examined if a state of sea-ice in Bering Sea acts as a prelude of variation in that of Chukchi Sea by using satellites-based Arctic sea-ice concentration time series. Datasets consist of monthly values of sea-ice concentration during 36 years (1982-2017). Time series analysis armed with Transfer entropy is performed to describe how sea-ice data in Chukchi Sea is affected by that in Bering Sea, and to explain the relationship. The transfer entropy is a measure which identifies a nonlinear coupling between two random variables or signals and estimates causality using modification of time delay. We verified this measure checked a nonlinear coupling for simulated signals. With sea-ice concentration datasets, we found that sea-ice in Bering Sea is influenced by that in Chukchi Sea 3, 5, 6 months ago through the transfer entropy measure suitable for nonlinear system. Particularly, when a sea-ice concentration of Bering Sea has a local minimum, sea ice concentration around Chukchi Sea tends to decline 5 months later with about 70% chance. This finding is considered to be a process that inflow of Pacific water through Bering strait reduces sea-ice in Chukchi Sea after lowering the concentration of sea-ice in Bering Sea. This approach based on information theory will continue to investigate a timing and time scale of interesting patterns, and thus, a coupling inherent in sea-ice concentration of two remote areas will be verified by studying ocean-atmosphere patterns or events in the period.
