Effect of non-uniform temperature distributions on nonlocal vibration and buckling of inhomogeneous size-dependent beams

  • In the present investigation, thermal buckling and free vibration characteristics of functionally graded (FG) Timoshenko nanobeams subjected to nonlinear thermal loading are carried out by presenting a Navier type solution. The thermal load is assumed to be nonlinear distribution through the thickness of FG nanobeam. Thermo-mechanical properties of FG nanobeam are supposed to vary smoothly and continuously throughout the thickness based on power-law model and the material properties are assumed to be temperature-dependent. Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is exploited to describe the size dependency of nanobeam. Using Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal equations of motion together with corresponding boundary conditions based on Timoshenko beam theory are obtained for the thermal buckling and vibration analysis of graded nanobeams including size effect. Moreover, in following a parametric study is accompanied to examine the effects of the several parameters such as nonlocal parameter, thermal effect, power law index and aspect ratio on the critical buckling temperatures and natural frequencies of the size-dependent FG nanobeams in detail. According to the numerical results, it is revealed that the proposed modeling can provide accurate frequency results of the FG nanobeams as compared some cases in the literature. Also, it is found that the small scale effects and nonlinear thermal loading have a significant effect on thermal stability and vibration characteristics of FG nanobeams.

Effects of normal stress, shearing rate, PSD and sample size on behavior of ballast in direct shear tests using DEM simulation

  • Ballast particles have an irregular shape and are discrete in nature. Due to the discrete nature of ballast, it exhibits complex mechanical behaviour under loading conditions. The discrete element method (DEM) can model the behaviour of discrete particles under a multitude of loading conditions. DEM is used in this paper to simulate a series of three-dimensional direct shear tests in order to investigate the shear behaviour of railway ballast and its interaction at the microscopic level. Particle flow code in three dimension (PFC3D) models the irregular shape of ballast particles as clump particles. To investigate the influence of particle size distribution (PSD), real PSD of Indian railway ballast specification IRS:GE:1:2004, China high-speed rail (HSR) and French rail specifications are generated. PFC3D built-in linear contact model is used to simulate the interaction of ballast particles under various normal stresses, shearing rate and shear box sizes. The results indicate how shear resistance and volumetric changes in ballast assembly are affected by normal stress, shearing rate, PSD and shear box size. In addition to macroscopic behaviour, DEM represents the microscopic behaviour of ballast particles in the form of particle displacement at different stages of the shearing process.

  • Candida cylindracea lipase was immobilized by adsorption on acid washed glass beads. It was observed that protein loading of the support depends on the size of the particle, with smaller particle containing higher amount of protein per unit weight. Initial reaction rate linearly varied up to enzyme concentration of 17.25 U/mL. Amount of free fatty acids produced was linearly proportional up to the enzyme loading of 1650 $\mu$g/g of bead. Achievement of chemical equilibrium took longer time in the case of less protein loading. Degree of hydrolysis was found to decrease in second and third consecutive batch operations on repeated use of immobilized lipase.

  • In this paper, we present the design and measurement of a side-fed circularly-polarized patch antenna with a dielectric loading. The antenna consists of a comer-truncated rectangular patch, an L-shaped ground plane, a dielectric loading material, and a coaxial probe. An antenna operating at the UHF band (910 MHz) for the RFID reader applications is optimized using a commercial software. The size of the patch is reduced by a factor of 1.73 by loading the patch with mono-cast(MC) nylon. Measurements of the fabricated antenna show performance characteristics comparable to those of much larger commercial RFID reader antennas.

  • A novel loading mechanism of wedge roller type has been developed. This type traction drive has long system life and high efficiency by changing the pre-load on a contact point. And this loading mechanism does not need precision machining. So it has, as opposed to the conventional loading mechanism, an advantage in saving manufacturing cost. In this paper, by analyzing pre-load generating mechanism, spring pre-load and the roller size are defined and the stress on the contact point by pre-load is calculated. On the basis of this analysis, the model of wedge roller type traction drive for the test is made and was carried out its performance test. It can transmit input torque up to 1.5 N m, with high efficiency over 91% up to 98%, with slip rate under 2.5%.

  • Designing of the squirrel cage AC Traction Motor has many difficulties which has to be small size in order to be suitable into bogie frame, high efficiency and light weight. It means that induction motor for tractive purpose has to be different magnetic and electric loading ratio from industrial induction motor. This paper is devoted to an examination of how this ratio affects overall design concept and hence the main design points for traction motor. Also studied is tile changed coefficients of the magnetic and electric loading ratio squirrel cage induction motor for the traction purpose which has been already identified from tile reference book for industrial purpose induction motor.

  • This paper presents a heuristic solution for the three dimensional container loading problem with boxes which are different in size. The container loading problem is formulated as a zero-one mixed integer programming model whose objective is to maximize the container utilization. Due to its problem complexity, we propose a heuristic based on layered loading technique. Also, presented is a way to achieve the weighting balance of the stacked boxes. A micro-computer based program is developed which generates container loading pattern provided by the proposed heuristic. The results are displayed by computer-graphic. To evaluate the performance of the proposed heuristic, computational experiments are performed. The results indicate that in most of the cases the proposed heuristic performs better than an existing heuristic in terms of the container utilization.

  • Experimental procedure to measure fracture toughness (J$_{c}$) under mixed mode loading using CTS(Compact Tension-Shear) specimens is described. It\`s loading angle ranges from 0$^{\circ}$ to 45$^{\circ}$ with interval of 157. The general outline of experimental procedure is similar to that of ASTM E8l3-89 fur mode I fracture. Equations fur determining J-integral is quoted from the authors' previous works. The relation between unloading compliance and physical crack size was calibrated. As an example, fracture toughness of aluminum alloy 2024p-7361 was measured and some reasonable results of J$_{c}$ with various loading angles were obtained.

  • As the cargo tank size and configuration of Liquefied Natural Gas carriers(LNGC) grows in response to the global increase in demands for LNG and the necessities of its economical transportation, impact loading from sloshing may become one of the most important factors in the structural safety of LNG Cargo Containment Systems(CCS). The objective of this study is to demonstrate the procedure of the structural safety assessment of MARK III membrane type CCS under sloshing impact loading using local zooming analysis technique of LS-DYNA code.

  • 컨테이너에 화물을 적재함에 있어서 고려해야할 점으로 컨테이너의 적재율을 들 수 있다. 단순히 제한된 공간에 보다 많은 양의 화물을 적재하여 비용을 낮추고자 하는 노력은 꾸준히 계속되어 왔다. 하지만 방문순서를 고려해야만 하는 화물의 경우는 다르다. 조선기자재와 같은 대형 화물들의 경우 방문순서를 고려하지 않았을 경우 하역작업에서 화물 재 조작 또는 하역 작업이 불가능한 상황이 발생할 수 있기 때문이다. 본 연구에서는 화물 적재 시 방문 순서를 고려하는 문제를 해결하고자 하며, 이에 방문 순서와 적재율을 동시에 고려한 컨테이너 혼재모형과 그 해법을 제시하고자 한다.
