  • In the low velocity displacement air-conditioning system, the conditioned air is supplied from the diffuser placed on the wall near the floor and vented near the ceiling. This system has some advantages upon the traditional mixing system; the air quality near the people is improved by the displacing action of the system and the energy may be saved by neglecting the cooling or heating load for the upper space of the space above the people. This study is to examine the temperature and velocity distributions in the room and near the diffuser. It is found that the temperature is stratified uniformly all over the room space to show the displacing function of the system.

  • The velocity trajectory profile of trolley is designed to minimize both swinging while transportation of load and the stop position error at the final stop position. This profile is designed to be automatically programmed by the digital control algorithm when the length of chain and the desired travel distance are given as a priori. Also, to minimize both swinging and the stop position error the anti-swing controller which improves poor damping characteristics of the crane and the stop position controller are employed. The experimentalresults of sequential adaptation of the velocity trajectory profile and these two controllers show that this control scheme has excellent control performance as compared with that of the uncontrolled crane system.

  • The physical and mechanical properties of red shale and black shale exposed in the Daegu area were investigated in tests conducted to determine unit weight, absorption ratio, porosity, ultrasonic velocity, unconfined compressive strength, point load strength, slake durability index, and deterioration characteristics. XRD, XRF, and SEM analyses were also performed on the shale specimens. While the unit weights of the two shales were similar, the absorption ratio and porosity were higher in the red shale than in the black shale. Despite the higher porosity of the red shale, the ultrasonic velocity, compressive strength, and point load strength were higher in the red shale, which is an unexpected result that may be due to the presence of fine laminations in the black shale. The deterioration rate, as determined from the point load strength and the slake durability index, increased with increasing immersion time and with the acidity of the immersion liquid. The deterioration rate was higher for the red shale than for the black shale because of the higher porosity of the former.

  • Many have been performed to decrease the thickness of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles to reduce the manufacturing cost. However, it is difficult to guarantee the mechanical strength under top-loading after decreasing the thickness. This paper investigates the large deformation characteristics of a PET bottle under a compressive load using experimental and finite element analysis (FEA) data. A round 1.65-L bottle is analyzed under a compressive velocity of 5 mm/min with a maximum load of 9,800 N in experiments. The arc length method is used in a nonlinear FEA to understand the buckling phenomenon of the PET bottle. From the analyzed results, a recommendation is made to restrict the top loading to less than 1,208 N, because the first buckling phenomenon occurred at a load of 1,208 N.

  • Contamination of environment induces the shortage of drinkables. In this trend, the leakage of water that occurs by breakage or erosion of rubber valve seats is serious problem. Rubber is apt to cause breakage between two materials when they contact with each other. The possible way to avoid leakage of water by damage and breakdown of rubber is to replace that with metal. Because of this reason, nowadays, rubber is being substituted with metal as valve seat materials for water works. In tribology, a severe from of wear is characterized by local, macroscopic material transfer, removal, or formation of surface protrusions when two solid surfaces experience relative sliding under load. One of the major problems in sliding of metals is galling due to bad surface quality. Experimentally, there are various elements which influence on incipient galling, such as hardness, surface roughness, temperature, load, velocity and external environments. This paper is aimed at verifying the galling tendencies according to hardness, surface roughness, load and velocity and showing how much effect the factors have on the galling tendencies.

  • In this study, the effects of shear flows around a 2-dimensional airfoil, S809 on its aerodynamic characteristics were analyzed by CFD simulations. Various parameters including reference inflow velocity, shear rate, angle of attack, and cord length of the airfoil were examined. From the simulation results, several important characteristics were found. Shear rate in a flow makes some changes in the lift coefficient depending on its sign and magnitude but angle of attack does not have a distinguishable influence. Cord length and reference inflow also cause proportional and inversely proportional changes in lift coefficient, respectively. We adopted an analytic expression for the lift coefficient from the thin airfoil theory and proposed a modified form applicable to the traditional load analysis procedure based on the blade element momentum theory. Some preliminary results applied to an well known load simulation software, FAST, are presented.

  • The fundamental spot welded sections of automobiles (hat-shaped and double hat-shaped sections) absorb most of the energy in a front impact collision. The sections of various thickness, shape and weld width on the flange lave been tested on axial impact crush load (Mass 40kg, Velocity 7.19m/sec) using a vertical air pressure crash est device Characteristics of impact collapse have been reviewed and a structure of optimal energy absorbing capacity is suggested.

  • This paper presents the characteristics analysis of electromagnetic pump using linear induction motors. The electromagnetic pump is designed to transfer the molten metals by the electromagnetic force of linear induction motors. The characteristics f a linear induction motor are analysed by the equivalent circuit method considering the end effects. For the verification of the analysis method, the locked test and load test with molten tin were made. The test results of locked test were compared with the simulations, and the velocity of the load test with molten zinc showed 0.24[m/x] with air gap 30[gap] which is sufficient for transferring molten tin.

  • Depth and working load control is one of the most important technique in control system for tractor rotary implement automation. Keeping the depth consistent is critical to bring along crops and to improve the efficiency and quality of the following operations. Keeping the load of engine consistent is an essential factor for the efficiency of operation and engine protection of tractor. In this study we investigated the possibility of application of depth and working load control system for tractor using a proportional valve through field tests. Depth control was implemented by the ascent and descent of 3 point linkage for the change of setting depth. There were 4 mm and 5.2 mm control deviations for setting depths of 50mm and 100mm, respectively. Load control was operated appropriately by the ascent and of descent of 3 point link for the change of setting working load. The standard deviations between setting load and engine load were 171 rpm at 1.3 km/h and 164 rpm at 2.3 km/h tractor travel velocity. The results of experiment showed that the characteristics of response was sufficient to be used as the implement depth and working load control system for tractor using proportional valve.

  • In this study, the axial collapse tests were performed under either static (or quasi-static) or impact loads with several collapse velocities based on the expectation that para-closed sections of the front-end side members (spot welded hat and double hat shaped section members) would show quite different collapse characteristics from those for seamless section. The test results showed that both of the hat and double hat shaped section members failed in the stable sequential collapse mode in the static or quasi-static collapse tests, while the double hat shaped section members underwent the unstable collapse mode especially when the impact velocity is high. The mean collapse loads in the hat shaped section members increase with collapse velocity for all the cases of the static, quasi-static, and impact collapse tests. In the double hat shaped section members, however, the mean collapse loads decrease with increase in collapse velocity in the impact tests.
